Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

Providing class, comfort, and a very capable 3.4L in-line six engine, the Jaguar Mk2 3.4 is a venerable classic that represents true British motoring heritage.

Produced between 1959 and 1967 the Jaguar Mk2 was manufactured here on home turf in Coventry, England. Powered by the capable and reliable 3.4L six cylinder XK engine, similar to those used in the early E-Types, the Mk2 offers plentiful performance as well as a classy and luxurious cabin for its occupants.

This particular example comes to us from owner David, having inherited the car from his father who has owned the car for approximately 10 years. Being a ‘68 reg this is one of the last Mk2 Jaguars to have been produced and the car is unchanged from factory specification, however the car has been standing for a very long time and is being presented as a project in need of recommissioning.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A very nostalgic car, the Mk2 Jaguar has to be one of the most gorgeous cars from the 60s and still draws attention from passersby to this day.

Inheriting the car from his father, the Mk2 has been in the family for over a decade. Having spent most of that time stored in the garage the car has seen little daylight during that time and while it has been dry stored it is beginning to show signs of its age.

Mechanically the car does drive however David does not know how reliable the car is due to only having inherited the car recently, so he has decided to sell the car as a project in need of some TLC in order to bring it up to scratch. Any questions you may have about the car can be directed to David in the comment section below.

Exterior

The British Racing Green paintwork of the MK2 compliments the sweeping lines of the bodywork wonderfully and combines with the eye-catching brightwork to create an undeniable aura of class and style.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original chrome capped wheels, these items are in average condition with some visible pitting and some minor corrosion present.

The wheels are fitted with Vredestein tyres which are DOT marked for the year 2011. These tyres are on the older side however they do appear to have a good amount of tread left.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Mk2 is presentable for the most part, with no major dents, damage, or scrapes to speak of. There is however corrosion present in a number of places around the car, typically around sills, door shuts, and arches.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The British Racing Green paintwork is a stunning colour and compliments the car greatly, the paint is not suffering from any major scratches, chips, or scrapes and is in fairly good condition overall. This is of course let down by the bubbling in areas with corrosion present.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car appears to be in great condition, with no evidence of chips, cracks, or scratches present on any of the panes around the vehicle. The chromework surrounding the vehicle is showing signs of pitting, an unfortunate symptom of the car's age, however this is not major and could be classed as light pitting. The door seals have unfortunately all perished, and these would need to be replaced.

Interior

The classy and elegant design of the Mk2’s interior is a jump back in time, with real leather upholstery, burl wood dashboard, and a simple but luxurious cabin space.

Seats and Carpets

The cream leather upholstery looks to be in generally quite good condition, with the front two seats showing little more than an age related patina consisting of a good dusting of dirt that would clean up fairly easily by the looks of things. The stitching of the rear seat back seems to have come loose on the passenger side, you can see this in the photos and video below.

The carpets all look to be in good condition for their age too, with no signs of heavy wear or threadbare areas, and the floor underneath is all dry too however there is some degradation visible to the floor pan underneath, indicating this hasn't always been the case. As a noteworthy item, the headlining will need to be replaced as it is ripped in several places and would need to be fully retrimmed in order to be considered serviceable.

Dashboard

The burl wood dashboard is in average condition as it is beginning to show signs of delamination and crazing to the finish. However all switchgear is present and correct and, to the best of our knowledge, in fully working order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gearstick both look to be in fairly good condition, with the rim of the steering wheel only showing moderate signs of wear on the outer edge and the gear stick does not present any obvious signs of damage or major wear, we did notice a slight tear in its gaiter though.

Mechanics

Powered by the robust 3.4L engine, widely regarded as ‘bulletproof’, this engine offers all the performance you could want from the Mk2.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.4L in-line six engine produces ~210hp, a very impressive figure for the 60s that has stood the test of time and offers admirable performance even by today's standards. Despite being sold as a project car, the engine starts on the button from cold, as can be seen in our ‘On The Road’ video and, whilst we didn’t take the car out on the road, the car can be seen comfortably moving under its own steam in both reverse and 1st gear.

Suspension and Brakes

Speaking to David, who has briefly driven the car since inheriting it, he tells us the suspension does not seem to be adversely affected by its stint in the garage, and still provides the handling you’d expect from the Mk2. Likewise he notes no real issues with the brakes, however he has only driven the car briefly and it has not been professionally inspected.

The Drive

Here at Trade Classics we are no stranger to the Mk2 Jaguar and in both the 3.4L and 3.8L form factor, the Mk2 is a wonderful car to drive. With enough grunt to get you about on modern roads, and all the class and luxury you’d expect from a classic Jaguar, this delightful example of the Mk2 Jag has every bit as much potential to be a wonderful and nostalgic weekend car as any of the examples we’ve seen before.

Electrics and Other

David tells us he knows of no electrical faults with the car, however once again the car has not undergone any sort of professional inspection in recent years so we would take this under advisement.

History and Paperwork

The perfect winter project, ripe for recommissioning in preparation for Spring 2024, this 1968 Mk2 Jaguar is packed with potential and comes to market with an appropriate reserve.

Being an inherited car, the Jaguar Mk2 comes with little in the way of service history or paperwork however two sets of keys and a certificate of authenticity lend themselves to the genuinity of the car.

Having spent most of the last decade dry stored but unused, this loveable example of the Mk2 Jag is somewhat run down but definitely capable of moving under its own steam and would simply need to be recommissioned in order to make a usable road car. However for the more avid tinkerer, this Mk2 also presents the perfect opportunity for a more in depth and hands on restoration.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
