Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Even today, the E-Type remains one of the most beautiful cars ever built and the Series 2 example is no exception.

With a production run from 1961 to 1974, the E-Type gathered many admirers, including Enzo Ferrari himself. Based on the D-Type, it had racing in its DNA. Jaguar claimed a 0-60 mph time of under 7 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph. The E-Type was available as both a convertible roadster and a fixed-head coupé.

This particular UK car is a 1969 Series 2 Roadster and is offered as part of an estate sale, having been owned since 1990.

The car underwent a fully documented nut-and-bolt restoration between February 2018 and August 2021 - there's a huge number of invoices in the history pack covering engine parts, to body and interior items. The cost of this has been significant with around £116k having been spent, however, as this car is now part of a deceased estate, and as such it comes with a very low reserve according to market conditions, making it a very attractive long term investment.

Importantly the E-Type comes with a heritage certificate and even a current MOT valid until 20 May 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Roddy the custodian, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having overseen the restoration, Roddy has an in-depth knowledge of the car.

Roddy has been caring for the E-Type since its owner sadly passed away last year - he told us the car was completely restored under his supervision.

John, the owner, purchased the car in 1990 with approximately 56,000 miles on the clock. Unfortunately, in 1993, the E-Type was water-damaged when the garage roof partially collapsed, allowing water to fill the car as the roof was down. Following the incident, John placed the car in dry storage, where it remained until 2018, when he decided to embark on its restoration.

Exterior

The long bonnet and roof-down configuration create an iconic silhouette in the motoring world - and this example finished in green enhances that visual experience.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with chrome-finished wire wheels, which appeared to be in good condition overall. However, we did notice some slight pitting on the inner surfaces of the wheels. The knock-offs were also in excellent condition, and a wooden template and mallet were present in the boot for their removal.

The matching set of Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres all appeared to be in great visual condition, with plenty of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The bodywork appeared to be in excellent condition, with no noticeable dents or damage to any of the panels. Particular attention and a lot of time must have been spent on the gapping as the the panel gaps look visually even across the car - plus the doors, boot, and bonnet all opened and closed smoothly.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The green paint is in excellent condition, with an even hue and consistent coverage - the reflection is also high due to a smooth finish achieved by a professional.

Being picky we did notice some light swirl marks around the car, which should be easily removed with a professional mop and polish. There is one more noticeable scratch just above the offside front wheel that could do with some remediation.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim around the car appears to be in excellent condition, with minimal tarnishing observed - we just noticed a small area of corrosion on the offside corner of the rear bumper.

Believed to be the original windscreen, it does show some scratches on the passenger side and minor lamination issues at the top of the driver's side. Both side windows also display some scratching.

The black mohair fabric roof is new and of course in excellent condition - it also opens and closes smoothly without issue.

Interior

With tan leather and a wood-rimmed steering wheel, the interior of the E-Type feels like a time warp back to the sixties.

Seats and Carpets

The interior is another highlight of the car, beautifully restored and just a lovely place to be.

The tan leather seats are in lovely condition, showing very few signs of age.

The beige carpets with leather inserts look great, we didn’t notice any major stains on the carpets throughout the car.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition with no damage noted.

The clocks were working as expected, and the odometer read ~63,249 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original three-spoke, wood-rimmed steering wheel is in great condition, with minimal wear noted.

The gearstick with its black knob also appeared in excellent condition, with the numbers clearly visible - the gaiter was likewise in top condition.

Mechanics

Capable of around 150 mph, the E-Type was one of the fastest cars of the 1960s - and the engine bay in this example is exceptional.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.2L straight-six fired up without issue, idling smoothly. Out on the road with Roddy, the engine performed excellently, easily reaching 60 mph, accompanied by a lovely exhaust note. We didn’t notice any unusual noises from the engine during our short drive.

The 4-speed manual gearbox engaged gears smoothly, with no crunching or issues when shifting.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension absorbed the B-road bumps effortlessly during our drive with Roddy, and we didn’t hear any unwanted noises from underneath the car. The front suspension also appeared to be in great condition under the bonnet.

With disc brakes all around, the E-Type stops well, with no vibrations felt through the steering wheel during braking.

The Drive

The E-Type brings the glamour of the 1960s to the road, and it is more than capable of keeping up with modern traffic, with a 0-60 mph time of under 7 seconds.

It’s the perfect car for a summer evening drive, with the roof down to enjoy the sound of the exhaust.

Electrics and Other

Of course there are very few electrical components in the E-Type, while we didn’t test everything, Roddy assured us that everything was working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

After spending around 25 years in storage, this E-Type was restored to a high standard between February 2018 and August 2021 - due to being a deceased sale it presents excellent value for money and a good long term investment.

Due to being off the road for such a long time, there isn’t much history available for the E-Type in terms of servicing, etc. The car was purchased from a dealer in London in 1990, with only around 56,000 miles on the clock. John drove the car for three years until a storm damaged the garage roof, leading to water damage to the car. Following this, John placed it in dry storage, where it remained until 2018, when he decided to restore it.

The E-Type underwent a three-and-a-half-year restoration, during which approximately £116,000 was spent. It comes with its heritage certificate, a file of restoration documentation, and has a current MOT valid until 20 May 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Is it definitely matching numbers? Cylinder Head, block, casting number, gearbox, back axle and body?

Hi
There has been a change of Gearbox before John purchased the car. Just came across the Heritage Certificate Request form.
