Introduction

Adam Purrier
CEO

A drivers' example that's ready to be enjoyed - this Series 2 E-Type is coming fresh from a long ownership and recent engine build.

The Jaguar E-Type was first launched in 1961 and declared "The most beautiful car ever made" by Enzo Ferrari. This large GT is bold, beautiful, and brilliant offering drivers so much at a relatively affordable price. Series one prices have surged in recent years, whilst series two still remain relatively affordable.

The Series 2 was launched at the Earls Court Motor Show in '68, with many changes carried over from the 1.5, the Series 2 had styling changes which included wraparound front and rear bumpers, enlarged indicators, reshaped air intake, a slanted windscreen, and various aerodynamic improvements.

Justin and his wife are the current custodians of the car after previously been owned by Justin's late father-in-law.

We think this example is a great option for an enjoyable and usable classic for the summer and improve over time.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Adam after meeting Justin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Family-owned for the past 6 years - Justin reports on how joyful this car is to drive and smooth the engine is.

As mentioned, Justin and his wife are the current custodians of this Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 2. It was previously owned by both his late father-in-law, Peter. He mentions it was their pride and joy, and they loved to use the car on warm weekends.

Peter enjoyed the car throughout his ownership, using it regularly and maintaining it well. Justin took over the baton, making sure it's mechanically tip-top with an engine rebuild only last year.

Justin will be happy to answer any of your questions about the Jaguar in the comments below.

Exterior

In '69 the Jaguar E-Type was more popular than ever with its sleek refined styling and aerodynamic touches - it looks fantastic in black against the chrome trim.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with wire wheels with chrome spinners all around, which offers this GT a very sporty stance.

The wheels appear in good condition with just some slight signs of pitting present, and with a good weekend of polishing we believe they would really uplift the car.

Each wheel is wrapped in Dunlop SP Sport tyres, each one appears to be in good visual condition.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this E-Type Series 2 is generally in good condition - there are a few areas that would benefit from some attention as mentioned below.

The panel gaps, whilst not of a concours standard, are good across the car with the boot, doors and bonnet all opening and closing well.

There are some age-related marks, and some very minor dings down the side of the doors, front offside arch, and rear nearside arch. These should be easily removed with a little attention from a paintless dent removal professional.

Visually the rest of the car looks sound, there are a few bubbles under the paint on the leading edge of the bonnet (passenger side), where it meets the sill.

Finally, we've taken videos and images of the underside, as there was an advisory on the recent MOT around some corrosion on the boot floor.

We've also taken hi-resolution images and videos of the entire car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The car is finished in an attractive and timeless black paintwork.

The paint reveals a deep lustre when viewing from a side-on perspective and could be improved further with a mop and polish.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim are very good across the car - no issues to note.

The window rubber seals appear in good condition and the chrome is good throughout, with some components showing minor signs of light pitting.

A Webasto sunroof is also fitted, which appears in great condition, and folds neatly backwards.

We have prepared an extensive gallery of photos and a video showing the exterior of the car in great detail. Please have a look.

Interior

Classy retrimmed biscuit leather which pairs so well with the black paintwork - a timeless colorway.

Seats and Carpets

Justin reports that the interior has been retrimmed in the past and it really does look like a good job was done.

The quality of this interior fit is to a very high standard, a lovely choice of colour, and detailing throughout the cabin.

The headlining, door cards, and carpets match the rest of the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard is also in great condition.

All the dials, gauges, switches, and controls appear clear, visible with the slightest signs of patina around the edges of the clocks.

All the lettering is clear and legible and Justin reports everything is working as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original Jaguar steering wheel and 4-speed gear stick are present, looking in excellent condition and inline with the rest of the condition of the interior.

Please take a look at the interior videos for a detailed tour.

Mechanics

Recently pampered with an engine rebuild and good mechanical upkeep over the previous years.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine was treated to a rebuilt last year to the cost of ~£5,000 by Heynes Heritage.

Between 2011-2014 there is over ~£45,000 worth of work carried out.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

Justin assures us the brakes and suspension perform well on the open road.

Please take a look at the images and videos to see the quality of all the components - as mentioned the car saw various mechanical upgrades between 2011-2014.

The Drive

Justin reports the car drives exceptionally well, and the amount of care, attention, and money spent on the car shows.

Take a look at the mechanical video for a view of a short drive around.

The 4.2L offers a silky smooth high-performance drive - it's a car that is luxurious to cruise in, and doesn't miss a beat when you put your foot down.

Electrics and Other

Justin confirmed all electrics work as they should and the switches and wiring all appear in very good condition.

The only exceptions to this, during our visit, was the map light and interior lights didn't light when we pressed the toggle switches. Also the clock has stopped, a common issue on these battery operated clocks of the time.

History and Paperwork

A rare opportunity to own an appreciating Series 2, with all the right ingredients and finished in a timeless colour combo - an ideal classic for a summer and improving further.

The car comes with a solid amount of paperwork in the form of part receipts from the rebuild and work carried out in the past, ~£5,000 was spent on the engine build last year with ~£45,000 previously spent over 2011-2014 on an extensive restoration.

Some of the recent work carried out includes a new alternator, spark plugs, and full service. Please take a look at the images to see the receipts for all the work carried out.

The engine is stamped with a different number to the VIN plate - so this is a replacement engine to the car. Being an '8L' engine, this is likely to have come from a XJ6 S2 car. The V5 has an engine number SM9B181 so this should be updated in the future via a request to DVLA. The VIN plate, whilst of course we can't confirm 100%, does look original and with its frame number matching the frames themselves.

Justin will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
