Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

An iconic British classic, the Jaguar E-Type is one of the most instantly recognisable vehicles in the world.

Manufactured between 1961 and 1974, the Jaguar E-Type is admired on a global level, both by those in the know and those who are not, as one of the most symbolic cars in motoring history, thanks to its gorgeous styling and stellar performance.

With its long bonnet and a 4.2L straight-six under the hood, the Jaguar is a thing of beauty. It isn't just pretty to look at; it also has the ability to get up and go. With a 0-60mph time of ~7.0 seconds and a top speed of ~150mph, the Jaguar is even fast by today's more modern standards.

This E-Type is one of the original UK supplied RHD cars, one of only ~1,013 produced. It has benefited from a good amount of service history over its life and has had several mechanical and electronic components, as well as its seats and centre console, restored.

New Fosseway vented front discs and calipers, a distributor, coil, brake reservoirs, and a new DAB/Bluetooth radio have been fitted. The car is also complete with its original owner's manual and service chart.

The Jaguar will be supplied with a brand new MOT certificate, with the advisories updated and issues resolved - a worthy note for the future owner. Overall, the E-Type is a real driver's car that performs well and looks great when out on the road, attracting attention for all the right reasons.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Jim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Owning a Jaguar E-Type has always been my dream, I've been lucky enough to drive this for the last ~4 years and have loved every minute of it.

The current owner, Jim, has been an avid fan of classic British motoring for as long as he can remember, he said, "Jaguars have always been one of my favourite brands, and in particular, the E-Type. There's something about the style and performance that just ticks all the boxes for me".

Jim has spent the past ~4 years looking after his beloved Jag - he went on to say, "It's been a car that I've put a lot of time and effort into. I've tried to keep the car as factory original as I could, although I have upgraded much of the interior space to make it more comfortable for my kind of motoring".

The time has come for Jim to part ways with his E-Type as he has different focuses for the future - he concluded, "I don't get to spend as much time as I'd really like to on the car. Over the past few months, I haven't used it as much due to different commitments, so I've decided to help the Jaguar find a new keeper".

If you have any further questions about the E-Type, Jim would be happy to answer them in the 'Ask the Owner' section below.

Exterior

Beautiful bodywork lines, sleek and sophisticated, the E-Type is arguably one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

Wheels and Tyres

The Jaguar is fitted with a lovely set of 15" wire wheels - these appear to be in great condition and are free from major signs of wear. If we were being picky, there are minimal sign of chrome wear on the rims of some wheels, although these are minor observations.

The car comes complete with a set of Bridgestone Dueler H/T 684 tyres at the front, and their condition looks good with a respectable level of wear. At the rear, the car is equipped with Corsa tyres, although the tread appears to be in good condition, we were unable to note a date code on these. The tyre specification shows 205/70 at both the front and rear.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this E-Type and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The exterior of the Jaguar shows well - both doors, engine cover, and bonnet section open and close well.

There are a few minor signs of misalignment, for example, we observed a slight gap at the base of the bonnet when it's closed - so some fettling is required.

We noted no apparent signs of any serious corrosion or issues with the bodywork, and the car looks lovely out on the road.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Looking over the E-Type, the car is in great condition with the Signal Red paint finish looking lovely. The colour looks an even match across the car, and the finish to the paint is consistent across the exterior. It's likely the car has been resprayed over its life. We noted no major scratches although there were some signs of paint blemishes next to the drivers door and front panels.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please, take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All of the glass sections around the Jaguar looked great with windscreen, windows, mirrors and lenses all appearing in a good condition with no cracks, chips or significant scratching that we observed on our visit.

Chrome work looked great with the headlight sections looking really smart.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking car the E-Type really is.

Interior

With plenty of class, comfort and luxury, the Jaguar E-Type offers practical charm and elegance.

Seats and Carpets

The smart black leather seats are in great condition, showing just some creases in the leather and wear on the outer edges. Upon inspection, the rear shelf section appeared to be in really good condition, with barely a mark on the bench.

The carpets in the cabin are also in good condition, with minimal signs of age. There have been sound-deadening sections added underneath the floor for added driver and passenger comfort in the cabin space. We also reviewed the boot section, which again displayed well and is clean and tidy. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The black dash appears in great shape with no issues or scratches to report. The top of the dash presents well and without splits, cracking, or warping. The odometer displayed ~86,692 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls are beautifully presented; all faces look clean and clear, they show no fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights, and the amp voltage, oil gauge, clock, water temp gauge, fuel gauge, rev counter, and speedometer were all functioning without concern.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the Jaguar's dashboard. Head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic 3-spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel features a lovely wooden finish that nicely complements the rest of the interior. Nothing of significant concern was observed here, but there were a few signs of patina. The Jaguar embossed crest in the center of the wheel was a lovely highlight in the driver's section.

The gear stick showed a minimal amount of age-related wear but no visible signs of damage, presenting in lovely condition. The handbrake looked in great condition also.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Tucked under the bonnet is a 4.2L straight-six, which produced ~265bhp and a top speed of ~150MPH from factory.

Engine and Gearbox

Jim reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well, with its smooth manual gearbox functioning without concern.

We took the car out on some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the E-Type through the gears and getting an overview from Jim's perspective on how the car performs.

The only noteworthy point is that the gearbox lacks synchromesh on first or reverse, so occasionally, a little motion is required to ease the Jag into gear, which was perfectly normal for this era of car.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold and for a closer look underneath the E-Type, as well as the well-presented engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, we heard no knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension, and overall, the car performed as expected with no observed issues.

The brakes felt solid with no noticeable pull or vibrations during the journey, bringing the car to a stop smoothly and in line with Jaguar's quality expectations. The front discs and pads have been replaced in May 2020.

We cover the underside of the E-Type in our 'Mechanical gallery' section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

As to be expected from a car of this calibre, the drive is quite sublime - be it accelerating through country roads or cruising up the coast, the Jaguar E-Type provides a comfortable drive that oozes class and comfort whilst offering respectable performance, even amongst modern traffic.

Electrics and Other

The electronics in the E-Type are relatively straight forward but present really well. Oil pressure dials read without concern as does the voltage meter, oil temp, clock, fuel gauge, rev counter and speedometer.

A modern addition is the updated JVC DAB / Bluetooth radio system and upgraded speakers.

Jim let us know that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and everything is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

Finished in Signal Red with a black interior, this UK home market RHD roadster comes to market after ~4 years of ownership. It features a restored interior and is in great driving condition.

Despatched to Rossleigh, Newcastle upon Tyne, in June 1969, the E-Type was first registered with DVLA in August 1970. Now registered as an Historic Vehicle, the Jaguar is therefore road tax-free and MOT exempt.

Two new front disc brakes and EBC brake pads were installed in May 2020 at a cost of £860. In February 2020, a new centre console was fitted, along with new speakers, seat cushions, and seat diaphragms at a cost of £359. A new clock cluster, replacement steering column cover, headlamp switch, new wipers, and six spark plugs were replaced in October 2019. In June 2019, the left and right-hand side seat levers were updated. The Jaguar's battery was also replaced in May 2017. A new offside top ball joint was fitted in August 2014.

The Jaguar had a good amount of restorative work completed in 2013 and 2011, where a new centre console was replaced, nearside flooring was repaired and welded, hazard lights were repaired, and the nearside drive shaft was repaired with new joints fitted. Combined, these works cost over ~£1,200.

Please note that on the last MOT in September 2023, several defects were advised. However, Jim will supply the car with a brand new MOT certificate with the advisories updated and issues resolved, which is a noteworthy point for the future owner. When reviewing the Heritage certificate and the serial numbers, we did observe that the E-Type is not a matching numbers example, after working on the car Jim found the engine number and realised the original engine had been replaced with another 4.2L Jaguar straight-six, the car does show lovely condition throughout.

Jim told us he has done a minor service on the car since our visit, replacing a new coil, plugs and air filter. He also has the car booked for an MOT on Tuesday 3rd October.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle. Should any questions be required, Jim would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

Hi Jim ,
I can see from the Govt MOT website that the Car failed it’s Mot on the 20th September with quite a long list of Advisories , but understand that it’s due to be re-submitted ( after work done )for testing on the 2nd October . Is the intention to provide the Car with a completely ‘Clean ‘ ( Pass and No Advisories ) MOT to pass on to the next Owner ?……or is it likely to be a ‘Pass with some minor Advisories ‘ outstanding ? Appreciate as a Historic Vehicle ,it doesn’t need an MOT , but this increasingly seems to be added by Owners looking to sell .
Regards
Robin
