Introduction

Paul Wright

We're well known for bringing you great fresh-to-market E-Types from enthusiasts - this car is no exception.

Of course there's not much to say about an E-Type that hasn't already been written, over and over again, so we'll leave that alone this time in the introduction.

What we will say is that this example is a home market right-hand-drive car that is in great condition and mechanically sound. It has been owned by Derek for the past four years, however, he's recently decided to reduce his collection and as such he's looking for another enthusiast to take over and enjoy this very stunning two-owner from new British classic.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Derek the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It was always my dream to own an E-Type Jag - mission accomplished and it's been an absolute pleasure.

Derek has owned his 1971 E-Type Jaguar since 2017. The E-Type had been on his bucket list for sometime, and he’s enjoyed every minute with the British classic.

The use of the E-Type has dropped off in the last year or so, and with a new house extension on the go, it’s time to part with the Jaguar.

Derek will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in Dark Blue, the E-Type was restored 24 years ago - and stood for 18 years thereafter.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with wire wheels - these are in good condition with just some light corrosion to the spokes that may be able to be cleaned off.

The tyres are all matching Dunlop with good tread remaining, however, there are some signs of slight cracking to the treads.

Bodywork

A full restoration was given to the car 24 years ago when it received new arches, sills and any other areas that needed attention. The car was then sanded back and given a bare metal respray - please see the photos of all the work carried out.

Looking around the Jaguar, the panel gaps look to align as they should for the doors, bonnet and boot. The boot lid does have a couple of small blisters that have started to corrode, but we think they could be rectified easily before they get any worse.

Paint

The paint on the E-Type is 24 years old and does have some small chips as you would expect. In general it is in good condition all over with just some slight blisters that have popped up, but not gotten any worse in recent years. Of course the benefit of an older restoration is that you can see any areas that may need attention - you don't get that same confidence with a newer restoration.

Please see the image gallery for more detailed shots.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition with a couple of age related scratches and a small patch of delamination to the top of the windscreen on the driver’s side. The windscreen seals have started to perish a little, but these are readily available should you wish to replace them.

The chrome work around the car is nice and original and does have some age related pitting to the door and boot handles. The headlight surrounds have started to show some surface corrosion. The bumpers are in good condition with no real tarnishing to mention. There is some slight pitting to the boot badges.

All the lights are in good condition with no splits or cracks to the lenses

Interior

The original interior resides in the E-Type - which has some nice patina that protects the history of this classic car.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the E-Rype are the originals, and whilst they do have some wear to them, they are in good condition with no damage. The door cards are in good order with no signs of any damage or excessive wear. The head lining has started to sag a little and come away, but included with the car is a replacement headlining which the Derek never got around to fitting.

The carpets do have some wear, especially to the passenger side which have gone threadbare in some areas. That's not the end of the world however, as parts are readily available and a new carpet section will just drop in.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any cracks to the top. The instruments are all nice and clean and look to have no noticeable scratches to the faces, and are all reported to be working correctly. The odometer is displaying a reading of ~48,845 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original, and has some slight patina, but otherwise in good condition.

The gear knob looks to be the original and the numbers are legible.

The gear gaiter is in good condition too.

Mechanics

The 5.3 litre V12 is the powerhouse of the E-Type - delivering 272 bhp and 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds, making it the perfect grand tourer.

Engine and Gearbox

All 12 cylinders fire into life straight away with the flick of the ignition.

Derek has taken care of any issues he’s had with the V12 over the past 4 years, some of which include the full overhaul of the carburettors, new HT leads, spark plugs, fitting a new electronic ignition, distributor, coil and ballast resistor. New choke cables and some coolant hoses have also been replaced. All this to ensure the smooth running of the V12, which we are glad to say has paid off, as it sounds fantastic.

The gearbox is a 4 speed manual and Derek reports the car to pull quickly through the gears with the change nice and smooth, and no noises are reported to be coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

Derek has recently had new brake master cylinders to the near and off side fitted, together with the brake servo and reactor valve. The brakes are now reported to be working as well as they should.

The dampers have been replaced at some point prior to Derek’s ownership, with Koni shock absorbers. Looking under the car, all the suspension components look to be in well presented condition.

The Drive

The 2+2 coupe is a wonderful looking car which will turn heads wherever it goes. The sound of the V12 exiting the quad tailpipes is music to your ears.

Derek has certainly enjoyed his ownership of the E-Type. He reports the car drives superbly and is a pleasure to own, he just wishes he could use it more.

Electrics and Other

All the switchgear is in good condition with some minor age related wear to some of the buttons, and everything is reported to be working as it should.

Just to mention some other parts which have been fitted including a new alternator, steering lock and a fuel tank.

History and Paperwork

Just 2 previous owners since 1971 - and in storage for the past 18 years, prior to Derek buying the car.

Most of the history with the car is from the work Derek has carried out. There are restoration photographs, which are nice to see, as you can see the amount of work that went into the car during this time.

Derek has put a new MOT on the E-Type, even though it is exempt. This was carried out on 25th April 2022. Doing this has ensured the car is working just as it should and to a safe standard.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and the vehicle is HPI clear.
