Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The last incarnation of arguably one of the most beautiful British cars ever made.

The Series 3 E-Type was produced by Jaguar between 1971 to 1975, to keep it fresh Jaguar performed a heart transplant in the form of a 5.3L XK V12, the car also got upgraded brakes, power steering, and four Zenith carburettors. At launch, Jaguar claimed the car would output 272BHP and reach 60MPH in under 7 seconds.

This UK Series 3 FHC E-Type is coming out of 2 years of careful ownership, 3 former keepers, a well documented history and most importantly presents in excellent condition with some significant mechanical expenditure recently.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have had a love affair with Jaguars all my life, starting almost 50 years ago in my late teens with a Mk2.

A car guy through and through, Chris has owned many other Jaguars in the past including a whole host of XJ models. When the opportunity arose almost by chance to acquire an E-Type he could not resist and went ahead and purchased this example.

His first experience with the car was quite something "So how best to describe my delight with the car, possibly just to say that when I first opened her up on the A3 near Guildford it was like lifting her skirts and letting her fly. It was a real thrill and the adrenaline was pumping. Wow I thought, a car approaching 50 years old and it still goes like the clappers".

The car currently lives in Chris' garage within an air-managed Carcoon when it's only being used occasionally. The car comes with lots of original documentation along with its production report trace certificate from Jaguar. He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

I would not be surprised if Enzo really did say it was the most beautiful car in the world.

Wheels and Tyres

The E-Type S3 left the factory with 15-inch tyres on 15 × 6K wire wheels, which look great on this car today. They've really been given the attention they deserve and appear polished to a very good standard.

The wire wheels roll on Pirelli Cinturato rubber, all 5 tyres changed in 2019. The rubber looks great having been fitted in Chris' ownership with no major wear to note with lots of tread left on each wheel.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this car looks in excellent condition, there looks to be no signs of accident damage, and retains flush shut lines around the car. The doors hang well off their hinges and open and close with ease.

The condition of the bodywork is very good, the previous owner avoiding inclement weather, and Chris keeping the car stored in a Carcoon. When getting really close to the passenger door, we did notice a very small area of corrosion of paint. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the bodywork of this car.

Paint

A lovely and classic "Light Silver" Jaguar paint is applied to this E-Type, the colour really shows the lines and shape of the car. The paint appears in very good condition, it's even in colour and coverage across each panel.

The car was treated to bare metal and resprayed in November 2016 by M.E.P restorations. During that time, the bonnet was replaced as well.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the finish of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading, and the Webasto roof presents in very good condition too.

Interior

The S3 is the ultimate way to cruise in style, the long wheel base and silky smooth V12 making for a more refined ride.

Seats and Carpets

Inside the cabin, the car has retained its original seats and factory spec colourway, the black contrast to the silver paint a perfect match.

The cabin retains a classic feel, the seats show signs of patina with some leather creasing visible in the seat bolsters. Both door cards appear in good order along with the carpets and headlining too. When getting really close to the rear seats, we notice a very minor tear and noticed the rear boot door card is peeling away in areas.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition and shows wear in line with the age and mileage of the vehicle.

Chris has fitted an aftermarket Sony stereo, perfect for road trips this summer.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Jaguar steering wheel is fitted and looks great inside this elegant cabin, there are slight signs of patina around the leather grip of the wheel, in line with the age and mileage.

A deep red wooden gearstick is fitted and looks great within the car, with a few signs of wear and the long silver handbrakes catches your attention as you climb in.

Mechanics

Quad-exhaust tips really make this V-12 E-Type stand out from any other Series.

Engine and Gearbox

The party-piece of the Series 3 was the new engine, a 5.3L V12. It was chosen for a smoother, more flexible ride that offered more torque in the lower rev range. Fitted with a manual gearbox, this example is for the those who enjoy working to get the most from the drivetrain.

Chris reports a silky smooth engine that has always been given the attention it deserves via regular servicing and MOT's. Most recently, a major service including carburettor rebuild and tuning on a rolling road. This car is well and truly ready to roll. Please take a look at the history and paperwork to see the work carried out.

Suspension and Brakes

Chris reports the car drives very well, with the suspension offering a very smooth and enjoyable drive, while the brakes system offering safe and prompt stopping power.

Again, as with the engine, extensive work has been carried out in Chris' ownership. The front suspension of the car has had a complete overhaul as detailed in the invoices.

The Drive

Chris reports the drive of this E-Type S3 being an experience, one he really appreciates and enjoys during the summer. He has only put around 1,400 miles on the car over his ownership telling us that every mile has been a delight.

Electrics and Other

We're assured that everything on the car works as expected, including all the electrical systems, dials, gauges, and clocks. Chris had a wiring harness check and repair actioned on the car, including a replacement alternator.

In addition to this the heater matrix has been replaced and various other ancillaries in the engine bay.

History and Paperwork

This good-looking E-Type presents in very good condition, with a desirable manual geabox and coming with years of history and paperwork.

A rare and desirable car with a huge following, the E-Type has future investment potential written all over it, especially one of this caliber; UK RHD, finished to factory spec, V12 FHC.

Prior owners have clearly taken care of the car, and it received a bare metal respray in November 2016 by M.E.P restorations. Chris has continued with the custodianship and when he purchased the car actioned a complete front suspension overhaul, carburettor overhaul, new engine cam cover gaskets, all new gaskets for the intake system, new spark plugs, distributor vacuum unit. In June 2020, Chris had the heater unit replaced, and the heater system re-commissioned, as well as the driver's door refitted.

The car also comes with its heritage certificate. When reviewing the MOT history, it looks like the car had a clock change in the early 2000s, and it's likely that the recorded mileage in 2007 was taken down incorrectly. Chris will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

Would you describe the car as an ongoing project? As it seems to have loads of parts missing? I just wonder if there are more than I can see? Lower front scoop chrome edge, heater box valve cover, mesh and foam squares that go against the bonnet when closed, chrome end finishers either end of the dashboard, tailgate hinge covers, rubber and strips behind front wheels, sill rubbers for both doors to name a few…….. what I am trying to ascertain is, although the car is running, are there lots of bits to finish off? I ask because a box of some of the bits I have mentioned comes to a few hundred pounds, and I wish to know if there is more than I can see? I also assume, although mentioned, a complete bare metal respray some years ago, has the car had more recent touch ups? I ask because of areas of overspray I can see in various places? I know every thing is relevant to price, I just want to know from you, what might I be taking on? Regards Geoff.

The car is clearly not concourse nor does it purport to be and this is reflected in the price .
As i am frequently told by those who owned classic cars for years that there is always something that needs money spending. Certainly during my ownership i have spent money on the car as the receipts testify .It sounds to me that you know what you are talking about however spending a few hundred pounds seems a small price in comparison to purchasing the car and the joy of ownership of a wonderful classic .i hope that helps and enables you decide to bid or not.
either way thank you for your interest

So do you know if it has had more recent paintwork? Even within your time of ownership? Does the car leave drips on the garage floor, front or rear?

Thanks Chris, my oversight. Another question, I’ve not participated in a bid on this site before- is there a reserve on the vehicle?

Hi Chris, fab looking car. What is the mileage?

CBE

The documents show a new speedo was fitted at some point after the engine change and this new one as at Feb 2004 showed 39337.
In Nov 2004 the speedo was renovated and zeroed and since then the mileage is as you see on the auction site circa 22300
Hope that helps

HI Chris
How are you doing?

I’d like to ask you about the car from a usage perspective, I appreciate it’s 50 years old.

How does the car run, for example if I were to buy this car and leave your place on that same day and drive it across London in some typical traffic for an hour and then at speed along say the M11 for an hour or so and then across country on A and B roads with some traffic, is the Jag going to arrive in good order after around 4 hours of mixed driving?
Should I be watching out for over heating, does it run warm/hot?
Clutch, how is it after stop start traffic? Does it still bite properly?

Could your car be a reliable daily driver for example? If properly maintained, not the high miles I just described but say 20 miles a day.

I used my 30 year old 964 everyday for 10 years across London and apart from the heavy clutch it was faultless. I still have it incidentally but don’t use it every day. I’m not looking for a garage queen.

Thanks for taking the time, the car looks great, pretty well sorted too.

I have not used the car everyday as I guess you could say it’s been a bit of a garage queen in the carcoon on a trickle charge .However it happily traveled up and down the M25 on a regular basis while I travelled for treatment on my damaged finger last year and trips to friends ,Jaguar events and the pub .As concerns driving in traffic I guess a good example is last year the car was used in a feature film that will be released later this year which required me to drive from Guildford to East London ( through the Blackwell tunnel ) and then to Silvertown for filming on what was the hottest day of the year .( traffic as you will know was a nightmare) Two days later I drove to Walton on the Naze for more filing and on both occasions the car gauge was never above the three quarter line As you may have read already I have a selection of cars to use but I would be fine to use the E Type locally daily if this were not the case .
I hope this information helps but if you would like to know anything else I would be happy to do my best to answer
