Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

The Daimler Sovereign, crowned for its superb ride, comfort and handling now in the rare coupe form.

The Sovereign was produced by Jaguar as part of the badge engineering era alongside the XJ. Between 1975 and '78, a special variant in the form of a two-door coupe was created. It utilises the shorter wheelbase platform and marketed as the Daimler Sovereign 4.2, powered by the 4.2L straight six engine and automatic gearbox. Only ~9,500 coupes were built, and around ~1,700 of them a Daimler 4.2L version like this one.

We really love the form of this 2-door coupe which we think has aged the best in the XJ series, Brook agrees and is the man who owns this beautifully restored example.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Brook the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'll be sad to see the Daimler go, they're a rare sight on the roads today, yet be happy that it'll continue to get the attention and love it derseves.

Brook purchased this rare and restored Daimler Sovereign Coupe a few months ago from his friend. His friends father fully restored the car around 2016 to the standard you see before yourself today.

Being a car guy, Brook was hoping to cherish this Sovereign Coupe for many years to come. Due to a change in circumstances and moving house for work, he will no longer have storage space for the car and so it has to go. Please feel free to ask Brook any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The dashing full-size luxury Sovereign in a sleek and sporty coupe form.

Wheels and Tyres

You'll find Ovation V-02 rubber wrapping the 15" wheels on this Sovereign Coupe.

The tyres have plenty of tread as you would expect from a restoration of this standard. Each wheel looks fantastic with a polished finished that really reflects the rest of the car. Please see the exterior images and videos to appreciate this car.

Bodywork

The Sovereign Coupe is true British craftsmanship, all the panel gaps look tight and correct. The pillar-less form on these cars really makes them stand out to the 4 door saloon version.

The bodywork having been restored a few years ago is still in excellent condition. The only fault we could find was 2 very small areas of corrosion under the paint on the rear offside wing. Take a look at the exterior photos to see the condition of this restored example.

Paint

Finished in a beautiful and subtle bronze with a contrasting black vinyl roof - so '70s.

All the paint is even in coverage and colour around the car, a deep gloss and lovely finish. We looked hard around the entire car, and could only spot one mark, a small 1mm nick on the rear offside wing. Watch the video to see the quality on this car.

Glass and Trim

In line with the rest of the car, and as you would expect from a restored example, the glasswork and trim have not been missed.

All the glass looks damage free, no chips, cracks or discolouration the trim also looks excellent too.

Interior

The timeless and luxurious leather interior makes sitting in the cabin a real experience.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats really do look the part, and have been given the special attention they deserve as has the rest of the interior.

You'll find a very clean and tidy example that has been restored to an excellent standard. The carpets are also deep in pile and luxurious in this Sovereign Coupe. Please take a look at the photos and videos to appreciate the interior of this car.

Dashboard

The car features its original dashboard which is lovely to see. The dashboard is showing its age with patina on the glass and bezels. Brook's friend wanted to keep the dashboard as original as possible and he has certainly done that.

Please take a look at the images for a closer look at this Sovereign Coupe dials and guages. Brook reports everything is working as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original large Dailmer steering wheel puts you in full control and gives off a luxurious feel when you sit in this spacious cabin, the wood finished automatic gear selector confirms this.

We love the wooden gear selector that feels and resembles a planes thrust lever.

Mechanics

Under the hood, the coupe is fitted with the 4.2L straight six coupled to the automatic gearbox; a beautifully smooth ride.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.2L engine powers this great looking coupe, mated to an automatic gearbox for the ultimate comfort the '70s could ever offer you.

Over this Sovereign Coupes life, it's been given healthy and regular servicing since the day it left the factory. Brook reports a very gentle ride, which can move fast when required. Please watch our starting video to see this car running with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The Sovereign is appraised for its smooth handling and control on the road offering you the best of both worlds.

Brook assures us that the car handles exactly as you would expect and stops just as it should too, no advisories to mention on a fresh MOT.

The Drive

Designed to be smooth and reliable with lots of room for luggage, the coupe will assure you get to your destination in style as well.

This was one of the largest coupe's on the road at the time, it was luxurious in the '70s and holds that timeless style to this day.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with an aftermarket radio and Brook reports all the other electrics are working exactly as expected.

History and Paperwork

Fully restored, relatively low mileage with original manual and service books makes this a truly desirable and rare two door Sovereign.

Coming with some of the original books and service records, showing stamps throughout the 70's and 80's. The car has just had an MOT actioned on it, and with it's last MOT post restoration passed with flying colours and no advisories.

We have actioned our usual checks; Seller ID, V5, HPi clear.

I would have been interested in buying this. But further closer inspection if interior seriously let’s it down. It looks as though its been done on Limited budget by an amateur (random staples in the door cards, shoddy headrests and mixture of old and new leather)

Just seen all interior pics. Centre Veneer looks cracked. Has the interior been re finished on a limited budget and maybe done by an amateur as the backs and sides of seats seem to be a completely different shade and material (assuming that’s the original)

Afternoon bud.
I like the car but the seats and interior seem to let it down, what is the story there please.

It stopped me from bidding on an otherwise attractive car, your late basic answer not helping the situation.

Hi Brook, i’ve just placed a bid and obviously know the car will sell at a greater figure as the process runs.
I’d like to have a chat on the phone if possible.
@Trade classics- perhaps you can organise and advie an email address that I can forward my contact number to.
Thx
