Introduction

Glyn Parry
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Combining a glorious V12 with legendary Jaguar opulence - the XJS is a stately, refined, and charismatic tourer.

As the successor to the E-Type, the XJS had a tough act to follow. However, Jaguar didn’t shy away from innovation and used Malcolm Sayer, one of the first designers to apply aerodynamic principles to mainstream production cars, to put together the initial design. Sayer, died tragically in 1970 and the design mantle was picked up by Jaguars in house team. The V12 XJ-S was launched in 1975, starting a 21-year production run began that made it Jaguars longest running model. The V12 XJ-S characterises the Jaguar brand perfectly. It’s powerful, stylish, beautifully engineered, and unapologetically luxurious.

This 1990 convertible is presented in stunning "Signal Red" over a beautiful ivory leather interior. Having been with current owner since 2013, the car has been well looked after and has covered fewer than ~5,000 miles that time. In great condition all round, good history and only just over ~51,000 miles on the clock, this a great example of the XJS.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It’s a wonderful car – I love the colour, it’s supremely comfortable and there’s plenty of power when you need it.

Having owned the car for over ~10 years Chris has thoroughly enjoyed it. He tells us “I really wanted a classic sports car and I’ve always loved Jaguars so when this one came up for sale, I fell in love with it”. He goes on to say “It’s a great car to drive, it handles really well, it’s powerful with plenty of torque and it’s just such a lovely place to view the countryside – I’m simply not using it enough, so I’d really like it to go to a new owner to enjoy”.

Working offshore has meant he hasn't had the chance to use the car as much as he'd like in the recent past, and so the car come to sale. Chris will be happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

An instantly recognisable, iconic, luxury sports car - superb styling and aggressive looks in stunning Signal Red.

Wheels and Tyres

15-inch alloy wheels appear in very good condition with no significant kerbing and only very minor signs of wear. The centre badging still looks good, and the chrome plated wheel bolts present really well.

The wheels are shod with 235/60/R15 Pirelli P600 tyres which look in good condition and appear to have plenty of tread remaining. Take a look through the gallery to see more detail.

Bodywork

Shut lines appear generally good, panels do not appear to have any obvious distortion and the doors, boot, and bonnet open and close properly. There is a small dent on the nearside door which possibly contributes to the passenger shut line not being quite flush on closure. There are a few age-related marks, and to note some minor surface corrosion on the underside of the front and rear wings.

The exterior of the electrically operated hood appears in very good shape, and as can be seen from the video, operates exactly as it should. Overall, the car presents really well – We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Signal Red" paint looks great and suits the car well. The finish is consistent and even while still retaining a deep shine. There are some minor, age related marks and stone chips here and there as would be expected, but we did have to look for them. Overall, the paintwork looks very good.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, windows, and lenses all appear in very good condition with no cracks or significant scratching. The chromework is good and, apart from some minor scuffing the black trim presents well.

As mentioned prior, the convertible roof is in good condition and operates as it should, as captured in the photo gallery/video.

Interior

Cabin looks and feels comfortable, capable, and opulent – with ivory leather and signature wood trim, this could only be a Jaguar.

Seats and Carpets

Stunning ivory leather seats appear in good condition showing only very minor wear to the driver’s seat outer bolster, very typical for a car of this age. The headrests, door cards and remaining trim presents well and the red carpets still look good too.

There are some minor marks to the carpet, most notably around the drivers footwell, however, there does not appear to be any significant damage and Chris believes the interior would benefit from a deep clean to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the car. The headlining on the hood would benefit from cleaning but we could see no signs of rips or tears and it appears undamaged.

Dashboard

Looking great set in the signature Burl Walnut dash, the instruments appear clear, undamaged, and unmarked. The wood and trim present in remarkably good condition and look stunning combined with the beautiful ivory leather.

Check out the interior review video and high-resolution images to appreciate this great cabin

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The walnut rim steering wheel and black leather, Jaguar badged, centre section looks in very good order as does the auto drive selector and Burl Walnut centre console.

Mechanics

Glorious 5.3L engine transfers ~273BHP to the rear wheels through the smooth 3 speed automatic gearbox – all accompanied by a gloriously smooth V12 soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

These silky V12 engines are legendary. Smooth, torquey delivery, it can do 0 to 60 in a whisker over 8 seconds and gives a manufacturer specified top speed of 148MPH. On our cold start the car started well, quickly settled down to a steady idle and emissions appeared clear. On the dash the only warning light illuminated was for washer fluid.

The engine bay looks good with no obvious signs of leaks or damage. The are some signs of wear to the soundproofing under the bonnet and the stays require attention as additional support is sometimes needed to keep the bonnet open. Check out the “On the Road” video to share in our experience of the cold start and our test drive with Chris.

Suspension and Brakes

With vented discs at the front and solid discs at the rear the Jaguar engineered brakes are more than a match for the V12 power and give assurance that this car stops as well as it goes.

On our test drives the all-round independent suspension felt firm and compliant with no untoward sounds. Chris confirmed that brakes and suspension work as they should.

The Drive

On the short test drive we joined Chris for, the car felt planted and compliant while the brakes pulled up firmly and cleanly when required with no sense of juddering or pulling to either side. The drive was quiet and comfortable, the changes through the auto box were slick and quiet while the wonderful V12 sounded glorious.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials and gauges look in good condition. Chris confirmed that the air conditioning and cruise control both work properly. There is an aftermarket JVC sound system fitted.

History and Paperwork

This car comes to market from ~10 year ownership, is a low mileage example of the sought after V12 convertible in arguably the most popular specification.

This XJS comes with original wallet containing the owner’s manual, service book with stamps up to 2011, and some receipts for historic works. There is also a selection of previous MOT certificates and tax discs. We are advised that the car previously held a private registration plate and is now registered with the age related, non-transferable registration G547 BLD.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, the main history is until 2011 I think, do you have receipts or history for any further servicing, even if you’ve done it yourself? Thanks
