Introduction
Paul Wright
Continuing Jaguars history of XJ luxury saloons, the XJ40 had a trick up its sleeve in the shape of a more economical 3.2L drivetrain.
In October 1986, at the British International Motor Show, Jaguar first introduced the new XJ6 model, which turned out to be the saviour of Jaguar. In the early years of the XJ, the engine options were 2.9 or 3.6, and buyers could spec it as an XJ6 or the much plusher Sovereign model, like the one we have here. In 1989, Ford took over Jaguar and gave them a massive cash injection into the company, which resolved some of the troublesome issues with electrical problems. The new and improved 4.0 litre 24 valve engine was also introduced, which replaced the 3.6 litre. In 1991, the 2.9 was replaced with the 3.2 litre. Both engines proved to be a welcomed improvement to the range.
This lovely low mileage XJ6 Sovereign (XJ40) was initially sold in Japan, where it resided until 2017. It then came to the UK, and comes to market with 3 previous UK registered owners, one of which was the chairman of a Jaguar enthusiasts club. Even now, the car still has an incredibly low mileage of 14,595 kilometres (~9,068 miles), and presents in excellent condition.

Good Morning Sam I’m a little confused in the description you state the mileage in kilometres, but the speed is mph ,so is the trip in kilometres if so can it be changed to miles. Also what is the auxiliary switch lower drivers side.
Thank You
David
Good morning David, my take on this is that the odometer is a standard gauge which would be used/fitted at Jaguar in the UK it shows both Miles & Kilometres. The electronic odometer records the distance travelled in the country of export i.e. K/m for Japan and this cannot be altered. There is a trip recorder which will select range for fuel in tank and this can select either miles or Km, again I think this is from the use of standard equipment used by Jaguar during build in the UK.
Hope this helps.
Sam Thank you for getting back
No problem David anything else just ask.
cheers
Sam
Hi just want to know if all electrics are OK< had lots of trouble with electrics on last Jag.
Regards,
Michael.
As far as I am aware there are no problems with any of the electrics, I certainly haven’t encountered anything wrong whilst I have had the car.
What is the aftermarket switch on the drivers kneeboard? Is the service book present, and is it stamped at all?
The switch operates the aircon pump which was fitted to meet uk standards when it arrived in this country in 2017.
The first service at 1500Km was carried out in Japan (stamped in book) and the car didn’t reach the next milestone full service until it came to the UK with just under 4000miles on the clock. The service book has been stamped twice at milestones since and there are some receipts for these and other work such as the Krown underseal.
