Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The XJR-S was the ultimate version of the XJS, it was a joint venture between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR).

Fitted with a 6.0L V12 producing ~333bhp, giving the XJR-S a top speed of ~160mph. The R-S gets more aggressive styling with an added bodykit including a spoiler. It also received a unique set of alloy wheels, the suspension was also upgraded. Only ~837 XJR-S were built between 1988-1993, making it a very rare car.

This particular car comes to market after ~16 years of ownership. Finished in "Flamenco Red" with cream leather interior, in 2005 the car had some major work carried out with brakes being changed, the rear suspension was taken off and renewed and new exhaust fitted. It's just been given a service and fresh MOT actioned, ready for a new owner to improve and enjoy, the reserve reflecting the equity in the car.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Austen the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I missed the last one I had and sold, when this one came up for sale, I had to have it.

Austen told us he loves the presence the XJR-S has on the road, there's nothing else like it on the road, its looks are aging really well too. Austen tells us the XJR-S has recently had a new floor, front springs, various mounting bushes, fuel lines, front and rear brakes, discs, pads and calipers. New tyres have also been fitted to the car with the wheels being refurbished also.

The car is completely standard, and after ~16 years ownership Austen has decided it's time to move on. If you have any questions about the car for Austen please post them in the comments section below.

Exterior

The XJR-S has the familiar long body of the XJS, now with added bodykit and bespoke wheels.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” wheels looked in good condition, Austen told us they had recently been refurbed. We didn't notice any damage on any of the wheels.

The tyres on the car were a mix of Avon ZV7 on the front and Toyo Proxies on the rear. All tyres looked to have a decent amount of life left in them. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this example did look like it has some areas that would benefit from attention, we could see some areas where corrosion was showing under the paint. One large area of corrosion was noticed at the passenger side rear arch. We also noticed a few places at the front edge of the bonnet that looked like they had been filled in with touch up paint. Behind the rear number plate also showed corrosion. Panel gaps looked to be tight.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Flamenco Red", it's a popular choice for an XJS. On the whole the paint is even in colour, but we did notice the paint of the roof was looking quite flat in places, we also noticed a few small dots on the boot lid, they looked like watermarks. We also noticed some marks on the rear bumper.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looked in good condition we didn't notice any chips or cracks, we did notice a slight amount of discolouration in the bottom driver side corner of the windscreen.

Trim around the car generally looked ok, chrome around the windscreen seemed a little tired looking but other chrome looked in good condition. Trim around the rear bumper edges seemed to be a bit loose. The rear driver side foglight had a crack in it.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Cream leather with wooden dash, the XJR-S was a classy and comfortable place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The driver seat showed a lot of wear, with many creases on the leather and a couple of tears in the bolster shown in the photos. The other seats looked in ok condition, showing a bit of wear but nowhere near as heavily worn as the driver seat.

The drivers footwell carpet was also showing heavy wear with very heavy staining, the other carpets looked in ok condition, the front passenger footwell was also a little stained.

The headliner looked loose and had some drawing pins stuck in it to keep it in place as you can see in the photos and video below.

Dashboard

The XJR-S had all its original parts including the radio and clock, with a V12 badge just to remind you whats up front. The dashboard looked in good condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel was showing slight wear around the rim, however the “Sport” badge from the centre was starting to peel off, as you can see in the photos and video.

The leather gear stick was also showing slight wear but nothing major, it looked in good condition.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The 6.0L V12 produced ~333bhp giving the XJR-S a top speed of ~160mph from factory.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started first time with no issues, we did notice quite a lot of smoke from the exhaust on the cold start, it was a very cold day though -1°C. Power delivery was very linear, the engine was very quiet too. The struts in the bonnet wouldn't hold the weight of the bonnet unfortunately, they would need to be replaced, the boot struts were also the same.

The gearbox felt smooth, we didn't really notice any harshness to the changes. We didn't notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or gearbox.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt compliant, giving a comfortable ride. We didn't notice any unwanted noise coming from the suspension.

The brakes felt good, plenty bite in them, Austen told us the brakes had been replaced recently. We didn't notice any pulling or squeaking whilst on the brakes either.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

We only had a very short drive in the XJR-S, but it was a smooth, comfortable experience. The V12 was running smoothly and felt powerful. The Gearbox felt smooth too, we didn't notice any lurching on gear changes.

The chassis felt good too, suspension was supple with no unusual noises noticed, even on some uneven surfaces and speed bumps. The brakes felt sharp, bringing the car to a stop with no issues, no judders or squeaks coming from the brakes. A nice big cruiser with plenty of power available when needed.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

The electrics seemed to be working as expected, lights and clocks were working. We never tested out the windows or radio but Austen assured us these were in working order.

History and Paperwork

The V12 really gives the XJR-S its character, with uprated suspension helping put the increased output down to the ground.

Austen has receipts for work done to the car over his time owning it, with lots of work being done recently including new floor, front springs, various bushes, fuel lines, front and rear brakes, discs, pads and calipers. Service history and MOT certificates are also present with the car, the car just having had a service and MOT.

The private plate shown in the photos is not included in the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

The previous MOTs indicate there was heavy corrosion to the sub frames then subsequently noted a lot of underseal, can it be clarified if the sub frame has been welded or brushed off and undersealed?
