Introduction

Glyn Parry
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

In stunning Flamenco Red over magnolia leather interior, this XJS is a fantastic example of Jaguars style and GT credibility.

Successor to the E-type, the XJ-S was first introduced to the buying public in 1975 having been on Jaguars drawing board since the late 60’s. The XJ-S became Jaguars longest running model staying in production for just under 21 years with over 115,000 cars finding homes.

Following the E-type was always going to be a tough task and Jaguar rose to this challenge with a very different design. Based on the well-established XJ saloon platform the car was initially styled by Malcolm Sayer, a Jaguar aerodynamicist and one of the first designers to apply aeronautical principles to the design of production cars. Following Sayers death in 1970 the design was completed by Jaguars in house design team.

Originally offered as a V12 the XJ-S was subsequently available in straight six form with both 3.6 and 4.0 litre displacement. Facelifted and extensively improved in 1991 following the acquisition of Jaguar by Ford, the hyphen was dropped, the car became simply the XJS, and the best regarded of all the XJS models enjoyed a further five years of production.

Presented in the beautiful colour of "Flamenco Red Metallic" over magnolia leather interior this car is an excellent example of that final iteration of the XJS. Great condition inside and out, with a partial Jaguar service history and a fantastic document file showing meticulous ownership, cars of this standard are becoming hard to find. The XJS has now properly earned its place in the Jaguar hall of fame and values are increasing steadily. This the kind of luxury Grand Tourer that Jaguar do so well. Sit back and take a look at the high-resolution photographs and videos.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting George the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is a fantastic car and it has been a joy to own – low ride height and effortless acceleration deliver a magnificent drive.

George has owned this car for almost exactly three years, he tells “I bought the car and immediately set about making some improvements to the bodywork. You can see from the photos that some really high-quality work has been carried out to the front end by an excellent body shop”. George adds, that the car has always been garaged and never taken out in the rain since the bodywork improvements.

The service history on this example was one of the reasons he went for it, although it needed attention to the bodywork it was clearly a good example. He loves the 70s styling of the rear buttresses that this model is famous for, couple that to the comfortable cabin and it has met his needs as a weekend driver perfectly. He's in the market for another sports car now and so the XJS comes to auction. George will be happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Famous flying buttresses, feline stance and stunning Flamenco paintwork give this big cat a truly classic look.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16-inch alloy wheels appear in sound condition with only very limited kerb marks visible. There is some bubbling on the rear wheels which may well benefit from the attention of a competent wheel restorer. All tyres appear in good condition with plenty of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines appear good, panels are flush without any obvious distortion and the doors, boot and bonnet all open and close with precision.

During George’s ownership the car has benefitted from new front wings and front quarter panels as well as a partial respray. Take a look at the photos and videos to see just what an excellent job has been done.

Paint

The "Flamenco Red Metallic" is a beautiful colour choice that suits these cars particularly well. The finish is even and consistent and still retains a deep shine.

There are inevitable age-related marks here and there but overall, for a 30-year-old vehicle, the paintwork is remarkably good. View the video review to see the paintwork across the car in detail.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, windows and lenses all appear in very good condition with no cracks or significant scratching. Overall the trim looks sharp and belies the cars ~30 year age.

Interior

Magnolia leather interior, trademark Jaguar walnut dash and luxurious coffee carpets make this cabin a fantastic space.

Seats and Carpets

The magnolia leather seats are in very good condition showing only minor wear to the bolster on the driver’s seat.

Carpets are a little tired in places but still useable, while chrome door treads retain their shine, overall a smartly presented interior.

Dashboard

Clear, unmarked instruments set in the signature "Burl Walnut" dash really enhances the interior of this XJS, making it feel like a serious grand tourer. The wood is in good condition with only minor, age related, cracking to the centre console.

The original entertainment system has been replaced by an after market unit with Bluetooth, CD and USB etc which all work as intended. At some point begore George's ownership the original powered aerial has been replaced by a no standard aerial which is contained in the rear wing and a cap fitted over the aerial hole. George mention that the reception from this aerial isn't of high quality.

View the photo gallery to see the dashboard and centre console condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is every inch a Jaguar Grand Tourer, superb! Jaguar inset in black leather against the walnut dash backdrop looks amazing. Both the steering wheel and drive selector lever appear in great shape, again, the condition belies the mileage on this example.

Mechanics

The 4.0 Litre six pot is taught, responsive and flexible, delivering ~228BHP to the rear wheels through a silky smooth 4 speed automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

The 6-cylinder straight six fitted to these cars offered greater flexibility and fuel economy when compared to the original V12 lump, while still delivering a top speed in excess of 140MPH, and 0-60 in under 8 seconds.

George mentions, that when the engine is up to temperature the engine temperature gauge reads at between cold and centre point. George believes it to be an issue with the gauge rather than the engine not being at temperature.

On our cold start this engine fired up without hesitation and idled steadily. There were no warning lights on the dash and emissions appeared clear. Check out the “On The Road” video to share in our experience of a drive in the car with George.

Suspension and Brakes

George confirms the suspension and brakes operate exactly as they should and as you would expect from Jaguar engineering. On the short test drive the car felt sure footed without noticeable roll, pulling up sharply and cleanly when required.

The Drive

On our short test drive with George the car was serene, quiet and comfortable but with a sense of urgency and potential. This XJS pulled nicely, the auto box was quiet and slick and there were no untoward knocks, rattles or bangs. Check out the "On The Road" video to get a sense of how this car drives.

Electrics and Other

Electrics on these cars are relatively uncomplicated. There is an upgraded Sony audio system and the original trip computer both of which are in full working order.

George informs us that the heating and cooling isn't very effective and the system would benefit from a re-gas.

The alarm system has been removed from the car as it was causing draining of the battery so the remote central locking is no longer functioning and the car has to be locked and unlocked with the key only.

History and Paperwork

A great opportunity to own one of these rare big cats - comprehensive history file , fantastic colourway and stunning interior. What better way to spend the summer.

Sophisticated, distinctive and elegant – the best of the XJS line and a worthy bearer of the Jaguar name. This Jaguar is a great example with plenty of paperwork to show how well it’s been looked after. Included with the car’s history are the original bill of sale, service documents, tax discs, plenty of receipts and photographs showing the restoration work that has been carried out. There is also an original toolkit and a range of spares with the car including the original Jaguar radio cassette.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Please note, this car will only be available for collection from Saturday the 16th of April for the winning bidder.
