Meet the owner

I wanted to buy a very reliable GT car... and the AJ16 engine is bullet-proof.

John bought the car in 2014 with the ambition of using the Jaguar as a car for touring in Europe. Unfortunately, plans didn’t come to fruition as much as he would have liked being too busy with work, hence the reason for the sale.

During the first two years, he managed to do around 2,000 miles in the car but has subsequently found it harder and harder to get the miles in it, driving around just 500 miles for the last four years.

Regardless, John has always looked after the car, having it serviced at Clarkes Jaguar XJS, commissioning a service every other year. He mentions in the ‘Meet the Owner’ video the car has had the shock absorbers and front spring suspension replaced, whilst also receiving a pampered life from all owners at the cost of £18,000.

Exterior

The Celebration was the final instalment of the XJS and was definitely the best looking. Geoff Lawson, the designer, was responsible for shaping the entire Jaguar line up, including the 1992 XJ220 supercar.

Wheels and Tyres

The XJS Celebration features diamond-turned wheels that leave a seamless alloy finish. There are some defects to them which you can view in the photos.

They are wrapped with Pirelli P6000 wheels with around 3-4mm of tread.

Bodywork

Being the final facelift of the XJS in 1991, this edition is by far the best-looking. The convertible body type has beautiful lines and is presented in excellent condition.

The shut lines are accurate and there are no signs of rust or dents. The offside A-pillar has a minor dent on the chrome work. A new blue hood was added to the XJS in February 2009.

Paint

Finished in a lovely metallic blue, the paint looks even and vibrant across the whole car. There are some usual minor stone chips expected from the car’s mileage but we didn't spot any scratches. View the video to see the condition in full.

The paint is signed off with the Celebration grey pinstripes situated along the middle of the nearside and offside of the car.

Glass and Trim

Both in great condition across the car. You might spot a crack in the windscreen, John is having the windscreen replaced in July and putting the car through an MOT ready for sale.

There is some minor corrosion on the offside door panel where the car shuts next to the end of the window.

Interior

The Celebration special edition featured several upgrades like embossed seats and a wood-rimmed steering wheel and door cards.

Seats and Carpets

The 2+2 grand tourer features some very special embossed leather seats that are still looking great. There is some cracking that you would expect from the car’s mileage but little signs of wear to them.

The brown carpets are looking tidy and in great condition.

Dashboard

The black dashboard is wrapped in leather with all dials looking in excellent condition.

As you look towards the centre console, the wooden detailing is very luxurious, with a clock in the middle as you would expect from a Jaguar GT. A new headliner was added in February 2009.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A wood-rimmed steering wheel matches the rest of the trim in the car and is presented in excellent condition.

The trim matching automatic gear stick looks in very good order, too.

Mechanics

John bought the XJS Celebration as he wanted a reliable classic to use for long journeys.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.0L inline-six AJ16 engine features coil-on-plug ignition after significant changes were made to the AJ6 engine. The engine bay looks clean and in good condition.

Please watch the ‘Engine Review’ video above to see the car start from cold. You can hear how smooth this engine really is.

Suspension and Brakes

John mentions in the 'Meet the Owner' video that the shock absorbers have been replaced and upgraded under his ownership.

Underneath, the car is free from any corrosion, the suspension and brakes look in fully working order.

The Drive

This 2+2 grand tourer offers a comfortable ride from a combination of reliable mechanics and comforting seats that have been touched with elegance and class.

Engage drive and the four-speed auto doesn’t clonk, though the car is keen to creep forwards. Release the brake, apply the accelerator and the big cat purrs down the road.

Electrics and Other

John assures us all electrics work on the car. As you can see in the 'Exterior Review' video, the car's electronic roof folds back with no issues.

The electronic seat adjustment is placed by the door handles whilst the car comes with a cassette player and a fully functioning sound system.

John upgraded the headlights to aid with driving at night, one of the few non-original features of the car. John mentions to us the original toolkit and soft top cover comes with the car.

History and Paperwork

The XJS has been pampered throughout its life by John and all previous owners.

As you can see by the paperwork, around £18,000 has been spent on the car for all repairs, MOT's and servicing from a number of reputable Jaguar specialists.

John's preferred specialist is Clarkes Jaguar XJS who have replaced the chock absorbers amongst expertly repairing other parts in the past. The current indicated mileage is 118,304. V5 documents will be present surely, a service booklet is available to view in the gallery.
