Introduction

Jon Dixon
Professional Consigner

Low ownership, low mileage, convertible variants like this don't come to sale very often, in arguably the best colour of sapphire blue metallic.

The XJS is a luxury grand tourer produced by Jaguar from 1975 to '96, it was based on the XJ saloon platform and was noted for the unique prominent rear flying buttresses with early styling drawn by Jaguar's best aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer.

The later Celebration models featured the bullet proof AJ16 straight-six 4.0-litre engine. In '95 the final spec changes were made and the car was referred to as the 'Celebration' model to celebrate the 60th year of Jaguar Cars. These cars featured diamond-turned wheels, Jaguar embossed seats, and wooden/leather steering wheel all found in this example. Coming out of 8 years ownership, this car is effectively one former keeper back to 1995 (the dealership registered the car for a short while before).

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jon after meeting Greg the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After the opportunity arose to purchase this rare XJS Convertible, I couldn't resist.

Greg bought the car ~8 years ago, and in that time has covered ~5,000 miles. As a result, this XJS Celebration sits on the low end of the mileage category, the AJ-16 engines being so robust that most examples have ~100,000 on the clock and beyond.

More recently, Greg has found his use of the car decreasing, sadly finding it a bit of a strain getting in and out of the low seats. He's had the car put through a service in preparation for sale so the new owner can enjoy the car from the get go. Please leave any comments you have below, and Greg will get back to you shortly.

Exterior

Drawn by one of the first designers to apply advanced aero principles to cars, this Sapphire Blue Metallic example is the one to have.

Wheels and Tyres

The Celebration spec of the XJS was graced with 'aerosport' diamond-cut alloy wheels, instantly recognisable from afar. The wheels on this example look very smart, we did notice a very minor area of wear around the edges, however, you'll have to get really close to notice. The rubber looks good on each wheel too, with a mixture of premium Pirelli and Continental tyres.

Bodywork

The XJS gained a more aerodynamic front and rear bumper, we love how the style has stayed pretty consistent since the '70s.

The shut lines and panel gaps all look good and flush with no signs of repairs in the past, with the underside of the car looking to be clean and solid without any damage. The hood on the car looks in excellent condition too, no damage to note.

Paint

Finished in a lovely Sapphire Blue Metallic, the paint looks even in colour and coverage across each panel, please take a look at the photos for a good view of the paintwork.

The paint is signed off with the Celebration pinstripes situated along the sides of the car. With the mileage and ownership history of this example, Greg believes the paint to be original, he hasn't had any repairs completed in his ownership.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears in great condition, with no chips or damage. This car has the period correct headlight lenses, many examples are often upgraded for practicality but we prefer the look of the originals.

Interior

The most luxurious cabin space in town, with Celebration specific flourishes like embossed seats.

Seats and Carpets

The 2+2 convertible GT features special embossed leather seats finished in cream with brown pipping. The seats look really good in this car with some usual minor wear to the driver's seat and a few minor creases as you would expect.

The carpets look also inline with the age and mileage of the car, deep in pile, and the kick plates look in great condition in line with the use of the car. View the video to see the cabin in detail.

Dashboard

The black dashboard is wrapped in leather and the gauges all appear in excellent condition too.

The centre console also looks great, a wooden automatic gear selector is shown with a period radio and other luxurious features.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The half wood/half leather celebration edition steering wheel matches the rest of the trim in the car and is presented in excellent condition.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the interior.

Mechanics

The bulletproof 4.0L straight-six made these late XJS's very practical, and now sought after over 25 years on.

Engine and Gearbox

In '94 substantial revisions were made to the 4.0L AJ6 engine and it was given the new name of AJ16, now equipped with coil-on-plug ignition. The engine was renowned for being very robust and reliable while offering silky smooth motoring.

We conducted our usual cold start video which can be seen in the mechanical video. Watch Greg turn over the car and let simmer down to idle with no issues. He just had a service actioned on the car in preparation for sale, spark plugs and fluids renewed ready for the summer.

Suspension and Brakes

Underneath, the car it appears it's free from any corrosion, Greg confirms the suspension and brakes are in full working order with no unusual sounds or vibrations when driving. The brakes were bled and serviced as part of the work completed in March.

The Drive

A luxuriously comfortable ride with effortless performance a pedal press away the XJS never fails to deliver. Greg notes it's makes you feel good whenever you are behind the wheel.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrics on the car are said to be working, including the lighting and locking systems.

History and Paperwork

An XJS with the right ingredients for a collectable; Celebration convertible, low ownership, low miles, beautiful colour.

Coming out of 8 years ownership, the car has a lovely history file charting its life and mileage over time. Just 2 former keepers registered with the DVLA, the first being TWR Coventry for 1 month, this car is effectively a 2 owner car from new. With its last service a few weeks ago in March, the XJS Celebration had an oil and filter service, along with new spark plugs, front, rear brake striped and the fluid changed, and is now ready for the new custodians to enjoy.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi Amerthyst, the buyers premium is taken via the card you’ve registered with us. With regards they payment of the high bid value to the seller, as per our terms, this needs to be a bank transfer in line with UK money laundering protection rules. Thanks, Kulraj – Trade Classics

I went to see one of these cars last year and the body looked very good in the pictures, however once I got there to see the car every panel had some quite bad scratches and minor, can you confirm that the panels on your car are as good as they look in the photos on this Trade Classics auction.
Regards Steve
