1995 Jaguar XJS Celebration Convertible

Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The XJS is a highly respected grand-touring classic, with a great all-round driving experience.

There's a myth that the Jaguar XJS was supposed to fill in the gap which was left open by the demise of the E-Type. The 1975 Jaguar XJS was created as a luxury grand-tourer rather than an out-and-out sporting thriller. Yet, as the years went on, it carved its own niche and became something of a great all-rounder. One of the important factors that ensured its appeal remained strong over its ~21-year production run the model was the use of high-efficiency engines, but the XJS's main staying power can be attributed to the inclusion of a full convertible option.

Its final iteration arrived in 1991 when the XJS was given its last overhaul, which also included a series of new 4.0-litre straight six engines and the further addition of a full 4-seater convertible. Further changes were implemented in 1994 and in the following year, the runout versions, known as the Celebration (to celebrate the 60th year of Jaguar Cars) became a fitting tribute to mark the end of production of the XJS. Distinguished by unique 16” alloy wheels, full luxury specification and a unique range of exterior finishes, the Celebration edition, particularly in convertible form has become rather sought after.

Finished in a stunning Sapphire Blue with a cream leather interior, this 1995 Celebration has been with its original owner since new and has just ~35,337 miles on the clock. Complete with its original bill of sales and 13 service stamps it also comes with three sets of keys and an MOT to the end of August.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Smartly presented with a high level of originality, this last-edition XJS Convertible looks sensational.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with a set of diamond cut 5-spoke 16” alloy wheels which were only fitted to the Celebration model. They are in good condition, with just the lightest signs of age starting to come through in places.

Shod with Pirelli and Nexen tyres, they appear to have been on the car for over 10 years. but show a good even thread.

Bodywork

The presentation of the body is positive with no damage, dents or corrosion noted along with a flush panel fit and even shut lines. The doors open and close with minimal effort and their hinges and struts are well up to their tasks.

There is very little to flag up in regard to the structure; the engine bay, boot floor, floor pan, suspension mounts, rear subframe and wheel wells are all solid.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Sapphire Blue paintwork has an even finish and is free of significant road wear.

There is some mild age-related paint finish hazing noted, along with a few minor marks and paint blemishes including small lacquer damage on the front wings and what appears to be a series of small scratches on the bonnet.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in very good shape with excellent seals. The only thing we could spot was minor lamination damage on the lowest section of the windscreen.

The chrome trim and body fittings are in very good shape, with no issues noted on the lights or lenses.

The bumpers appear to be well-fitted and flush to the body, with just a few minor marks noted.

Interior

Decadent and elegant, the cabin is well-equipped and has been pampered over the years.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats are in good condition, being super picky, we did notice the driver's seat has mild bolster creases and a little loose piping, there’s also a small mark spotted on the passenger seat.

The rear seats are in very good order.

The carpets are in good condition too, with no signs of significant wear or dampness.

Dashboard

The dashboard, switchgear and controls presented well and everything is said to function correctly.

The walnut veneer finish has been well preserved, with just a minor fracture and fading spotted around the vent on the left-hand side - the facia and centre console finish are in great shape.

The cabin trim is presented very well, with the headlining and door cards are free of wear.

There was just a little damage to the veneer on the driver-side door capping.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden steering wheel and gear lever are in good order, with no fractures of wear observed.

Mechanics

Mechanically robust with an excellent service record, the XJS has an impressive amount of power to match the refinement.

Engine and Gearbox

The silky 4.0-litre straight-six engine fired up immediately with no hesitancy. The engine management lights all remained off as the exhausts remained clear of any smoke. Idling smoothly, there were also no suggestions of engine fluid leaks.

The engine is cleanly presented, with mild signs of age in places but appears to have seen regular maintenance.

The four-speed automatic gearbox was demonstrated to change quickly and smoothly, with no reports of hesitation on kick-down.

Suspension and Brakes

The car's ride was demonstrated to be as smooth and comfortable as you’d hope for, with no unwanted noises or unevenness. The car soaked up the road with no knocks or vibrations.

The brakes were demonstrated to be excellent, with no unwanted noises heard from the wheels.

The steering remains true upon braking and with no pulling to the side.

The Drive

The XJS could be considered the last of the old school Jaguars, yet its impressive mannerisms and utter refinement betray its 50-year-old roots. Its effortless performance and driving experience would easily match that of a car of a modern standing. As we drove along the urban roads, the XJS's near-silent engine, allowed us to try to focus on any other noises while the car was in motion. We are pleased to report that, there were simply no significant rattles, thuds or knocks from the wheels as we were treated to a short local drive around.

The car corners neatly, with no untoward noises when turning from lock to lock. While we were not offered a lengthy drive, to show the car's best qualities, the owner has assured us that it cruises smoothly and has plenty of power and torque if needed.

Quiet and refined at low speeds, its a comfortable and pleasurable place to be in.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test everything during our visit but David told us, to his knowledge, that everything was in working order.

The soft top lowers and raises seamlessly with no strains or jamming from the motors. The car also comes with its original leather hood cover which is in great condition.

History and Paperwork

A consistent program of servicing and measured journeys over the years has meant trouble-free motoring.

First registered by Evans Halshaw Birmingham in September 1995, the car, thanks to its sole owner, has remained in the area ever since. It was serviced nine times at a main Jaguar dealer with the other four stamps carried out by independents.

David has also retained its original bill of sales, a tracker invoice and previous versions of the V5 documentation. The car was last serviced in August 2023 and has done fewer than 700 miles since then. It has three sets of keys and its MOT is due in August 2024.

Please note that the ageless registration plate is not part of the sale and the car will be handed over to its new owner with an age-related number plate.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.
