1999 Jaguar XKR Convertible

Introduction

Colin Bashford
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

True Jaguar DNA; Beauty, elegance, power and control, and with only ~27,500 miles on the clock this is a special car.

It’s the Geneva Motor Show 1996 and the world is witnessing the launch of the Jaguar XK8. Beautiful, elegant and perfectly in keeping with Jaguar tradition, the Fergus Pollock styled car is a master stroke. Both convertible and coupe bodies are available and the response from the public leads to over 91,000 of these cars finding owners, many in the United States.

A fitting replacement to the iconic XJS, the XK8 delivered more than a touch of innovation. As well as sharing a platform with the Aston Martin DB7 this was the first Jaguar built V8 engine, past Jaguars had utilised the Daimler V8 unit with huge success. However, the 32 valve AJ-V8 engine used in these cars was ground-breaking and delivers the smooth, refined, effortless power with which Jaguar will always be associated.

1998 saw the introduction of the Supercharged “R” model delivering 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and a governed top speed of 155MPH. Supercar performance and stunning looks were blended with the luxury and refinement of a stunning sports cruiser. Along with the MkII and the E-Type these cars are A listers in the Jaguar story.

With an incredible ~27,500 miles on the clock and only one owner since leaving the factory, this XKR is a stunning car. Finished in "Lazurite Blue" over ivory leather interior in the more desirable convertible form, it presents in very good un-restored condition, having covered just ~300 miles in the last decade.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Douglas the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It’s been a 23-year relationship and I’ve loved every single minute of it!

Douglas has been in possession of this car since it left the factory. Registered initially to his company, and then transferred into his personal ownership in 2006. He tells us "I love it – its looks, the colour, the style and the way it drives. I’ll be sad to see it go but it really deserves to be driven and enjoyed".

Coming from the same ownership from new, this example has benefitted from dry storage and the low mileage means it stands head and shoulders above many available on the market today. Douglas will be happy to answer any questions you have about the Jaguar in the comments below.

Exterior

Beautiful Lazurite blue with flowing curves and purposeful demeanour - all the personality of a feline predator!

Wheels and Tyres

The 18-inch alloy wheels present well, just a few kerb marks which Douglas believes could be addressed by a competent wheel restorer.

The wheels are shod with 245/45 ZR Pirelli tyres all round which appear in great condition with good tread remaining. Take a look through the photo gallery for a closer view.

Bodywork

In the more desirable convertible form, the XKR just had a few subtleties to the design compared to the XK8; a sleek spoiler to the rear and bonnet louvres for better air-flow.

The shut lines appear good on this example, and bonnet, doors and boot all open and close with precision. The hood is in great condition and operates smoothly. View the video review to see all the panels from a variety of angles.

Paint

In itself the "Lazurite Blue" paint is a fantastic colour choice. On this car the finish is consistent and even with a deep shine and lustre.

There are some age-related stone chips and marks, most notably a small scratch on the rear valance and scuffs on the driver’s door and below the offside headlight. Overall though, the car looks very very good, owing to the dry storage and low mileage covered. Take a look at the high-resolution photographs we have taken to judge the condition of this car for yourself.

Glass and Trim

Windows and mirrors are clear, without chips and free from scratching. Lights and lenses also look great without any signs of damage, crisp. The XKR features a mesh grill to the front, you'll sometimes see non R versions stealing this styling tweak that was reserved for the supercharged variant.

Interior

Ivory leather seats, coffee carpets and trademark burl Walnut dash, pure Jaguar prowess and luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The ivory leather seats are in great condition, no major damage/rips etc. The front seats shows signs of use and creasing to the leather, while the rear seats appear in showroom condition. The coffee-coloured carpets are in very good condition and overall, the interior is comfortable, welcoming and luxurious.

Dashboard

Burl Walnut dash, a Jaguar trademark, is in remarkably good shape in this XKR, as are the instruments and switches. There are no apparent cracks or peeling, more than likely owing to the cars garaged life.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel appears in great condition and the drive selector in its burl Walnut mounting presents really well. Take a look at the interior video and high-resolution images to get real sense of this luxury GT cabin.

Mechanics

Supercharged V8 power delivered through Jaguars legendary drivetrain - an unforgettable driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The early XKRs like this example featured a 4.0 Litre Jaguar V8 that transfers ~375BHP to the rear wheels through a silky smooth 5-speed automatic gearbox. Although the displacement went up to 4.2L later in the production run, this big cat still offered the same top-line figures of 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and a 155MPH limited top speed.

Check out the "On The Road" video to see that following an effortless cold start, the car settles down to a deep growl, idles smoothly, and goes about its business without issue.

Suspension and Brakes

This is Jaguar engineering, with ventilated discs front and rear you can be assured this ~375BHP big cat will stop just as well as it goes.

The front brakes pads were replaced as part of the 2020 service and the rear shock absorbers in 2021. Douglas assures us brakes and suspension work exactly as they should.

The Drive

Serene, relatively quiet and stable but with eager, raw potential. This is a Jaguar and this XKR does justice to its heritage. Check out the On The Road Video to share in our experience. The car was comfortable and planted with plenty of power.

Electrics and Other

We are assured all electrics work exactly as they should and there were no apparent issues on the test drive. The key fob was replaced as part of the 2021 service. This XKR is equipped a period Jaguar audio cassette player.

History and Paperwork

A fantastic one owner from new XKR convertible with fewer than ~27,500 miles on the clock and ~300 miles in the last decade - this is a rare big cat that’s ready for an unforgettable 2022 summer.

These XKR’s offer fantastic value and convertibles with this kind of mileage and history are becoming increasingly rare. Able to give the equivalent Aston Martins and Porsche a run for their money, these cars also offer luxurious, comfortable, long-distance cruising. Receipts for significant expenditure in recent years evidence conscientious and diligent ownership. This XKR offers fantastic motoring and highly likely some sound investment potential.

The stunning "Lazurite Blue" exterior and ivory leather trim accentuate the beautiful lines. Wherever you decided to take this car in the summer of 2022 you would do so in style.

A MOT test is booked for end of March.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

On the Gov.Uk website – reference the MOT history – in 2005 the vehicle has been recorded as ‘ Accident damage to offside of vehicle ‘
Which doesn’t appear on the write up here of the vehicle.
How bad was the accident ? Who repaired the vehicle ? And do you hold receipts ?
