Introduction

Tom Valle
Professional Consigner

When Jaguar upgraded the XK8 to the more powerful XKR, the big cat was ready to come out and play.

Project X100 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show on March 5th 1996. Project X100 was the name used for the now more commonly known Jaguar XK8. The new model brought with it brand new standards to the luxury car market. Available as either a coupe or convertible, the sales expectations were exceeded by far, and the XK8 became the fastest selling sports car in Jaguar’s history.

The choice of engine for the new 2+2 grand tourer was Jaguar’s new 4.0 litre V8 engine, which produced an impressive 290 Bhp and 290 ft-lb. No manual transmission was available in the Jaguar XK8. Instead, it was fitted with an all new 5-speed electronic automatic transmission, featuring normal and sport modes.

It was in 1998 when the XK8 was joined by the more powerful supercharged XKR. With 370BHP on tap, the supercharged monster featured an Eaton supercharger and a new intercooler. There were a couple of telltale signs that there was something a little extra packing under the bonnet, like the louvers in the bonnet to improve air flow, the mesh grille and the rear spoiler.

Chris, the owner, and his brother have enjoyed the Jaguar immensely. Chris's brother pulled out of the car a couple of years ago, but Chris still enjoys the car and it wouldn't be going if the space wasn't needed for anything else.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Tom after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My brother and I purchased the Jaguar - knowing how much my dad loved them, it was the best thing to do.

Chris and his brother were left an inheritance by their late Father, a Jaguar enthusiast and both felt it fitting they should honour his memory with what had been the most favourite car he'd ever owned, an XKR. Chris has a very fond memory of his now late mum and dad, when both in their late 70's turning up at Chris' house in his dads first ever Jag convertible. Both wearing Jaguar baseball caps, matching fleeces and huge grins, the pair of them were like teenagers!

After an extensive search for a particularly "good one", six having already been discarded, and bought as a homage to their late dad, the XKR being offered here was driven and enjoyed by the brothers. However, a short time ago for personal reasons, Chris's brother decided to cash in his half and Chris obliged by buying him out at "todays" prices. Knowing just how good the car already was and with the intention of keeping it, he embarked on taking it to the next level, hence the expenditure and upgrades undertaken in August of this year.

Although a bit of sales cliche, with a new and rather special daily driver around the corner needing his limited garage space and less time to enjoy the old Jag, Chris has made the decision that it's time to pass it on, albeit with reservations. He'll be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments section below.

Exterior

The exterior of the XKR is as straight as a die - the bright Pacific blue paintwork sets the tone for this wonderful supercharged machine.

Wheels and Tyres

The BBS two piece split rims have some light marks to the faces around the bolt holes, the two nearside stainless embellishers having suffered minor kerb damage, did their job in protecting the aluminium wheel. Chris has bought and includes in the sale two new embellishers which, if keeping the car, he would have had fitted at the next tyre change.

The tyres are matching Dunlop SP sport, which are in good condition, with a good amount of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this 2001 convertible is in excellent condition. The doors, bonnet and boot look to align just as Jaguar intended. There are no little annoying dinks that we could see when looking around the car.

The roof looks to have spent most of its life closed, as the creases are minimal for the age of the vehicle. Included is a tonneau cover to use when the roof is lowered.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the bodywork condition for yourselves.

Paint

The XKR is finished in the wonderful Pacific Blue and is in stunning condition. There are a few light stone chips to mention, but much less than you would think for the age of the car. Chris was quoted £350 to touch in and machine polish the car, but this didn’t happen as the detailer closed due to Covid. The car does come with indoor and outdoor car covers.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in excellent condition with no noticeable scratches to be seen.

Being picky, there is a very small amount of corrosion under the grey windscreen trim, but you do have to look for it, and another small mark on the driver's side window trim. The minor corrosion to the grey trim areas under the windows from Chris's own research are affected not by neglect but Jaguars failure originally to prime the parts, these can however be easily refinished in situ or replaced with new which are still available

The grille looks to be in good order with no damage to the mesh and the headlights lenses are nice and bright, with no damage to be seen.

Interior

Ivory leather was the choice of colour from Jaguar - this is nice and bright, with a good contrast to the Pacific Blue exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Jaguar have been finished in Ivory leather and are in very nice condition. There is some age related creasing to the driver's seat, but there looks to be no damage to the leather. Definitely something that could be re-coloured by a leather specialist.

The carpets are in good order with a set of factory mats adding extra protection. Into the boot, and there is a Jaguar load liner which has a couple of splits on the edge. It has a matching carpet to the rest of the interior. There is a CD multichanger and satellite navigation system to the right. The boot mounted fire extinguisher, having never been used, will be out of date. The spare wheel is present, along with the jack and wheel brace.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition along with the burr walnut fascia. Whilst retaining its original high gloss finish, the centre section has taken on a milky appearance, to those in the know this is a very common issue. Chris mentions that his investigation into a remedy unearthed in an online forum, that careful application of a warm hairdryer plied across the surface can improve the appearance considerably.

The instruments are in excellent condition and are all reported to be working as they should - the odometer is showing a reading of ~43,309 miles. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Sitting in the driver's seat you are faced with a nice half wood, half leather steering wheel, which shows no excessive wear.

The gear knob is also in good order with the positions clearly marked on the surround.

Mechanics

4.0 Supercharged is certainly enough to keep you entertained - with a full service and upgrades, it’s ready for its new owner.

Engine and Gearbox

Chris has ensured his jaguar is in tip top condition with a recent visit to Mugglestone and Co, who are independent Jaguar specialists. They have carried out some work to all the known problem areas on a XKR which aren't many, but every car has them.

The water pump has been replaced in favour of an uprated item, with metal fins as opposed to the factory plastic fin type, in which the fins deteriorate. The top timing chain tensioners have also been replaced with upgraded metal items. The XKR was then given a full service, including engine flush, spark plugs and a full set of belts.

Mugglestone and Co carried out an appraisal of the vehicle, which you can see in the document section, to which they reported the Jaguar is in A+ condition mechanically, bodywork and interior.

Suspension and Brakes

Renowned Jaguar racing specialists Swallow engineering supplied the uprated underbody braces which improve stiffness and handling, the rest of the suspension has been checked and is in good order as would be expected of warranted circa 43000 mile car. Mugglestones Jaguar specialists mechanical appraisal of the car only highlighted one part requiring attention, a NSF upper suspension arm and this was immediately taken care of.

The brakes bring the supercharged cat to a halt straight and even, with no pulling to the left or right.

The Drive

The drive can only be described as smooth, with the perfect soundtrack of the supercharged 4.0. Chris really loves driving the XKR and quite openly admits and wonders why he is selling it, because it is such a nice car to own and drive.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should, including the air-con and sat-nav. The switchgear all looks to be in good order. The factory fit cassette player is coupled to the boot mounted CD multichanger. The car has had a new battery fitted in 2021, and C-Tek charger/conditioner wires fitted in the boot allowing the new owner to attach their own C-Tek mains unit with ease. Chris also mentions the car comes with its very effective OEM wind deflector.

Another point to mention is that the car is fitted with adaptive cruise control, which for 2001 was pretty ahead of its time. Chris tells us tongue in cheek "Despite the claims of autonomous braking, I haven't tried this feature out as I do like the way the front of this car looks!".

History and Paperwork

Excellent history comes with the Jaguar, showing a number of receipts from the restoration work.

Always nice to see, the original owner’s handbook together with instruction manuals for the audio and satellite navigation are present. The service book has a total of 11 stamps, and there are some previous invoices for some of the services carried out. This includes the last one, where the XKR was serviced and had the additional upgrades, at a cost of £2,171.73. It was also fully inspected and given an A+ rating by the Jaguar specialists for the overall condition of the car. In addition to this, Chris is also letting the private, ageless registration number go with the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
