Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Beautiful, elegant and perfectly in keeping with tradition - the XKR was a Jaguar masterstroke

At the Geneva Motor Show 1996 the Jaguar XK8 was launched to critical acclaim. With inescapable Jaguar DNA the new, Fergus Pollock styled tourer, offered beauty, elegance and power. Available in both coupe and convertible form, over 91,000 of these cars found homes with many going to the USA. Sharing a platform, the Aston Martin DB7 the XK8 offered the first Jaguar built V8 engine. Past Jaguars having, very successfully, utilised the Daimler V8 unit. However, the 32 valve AJ-V8 engine used in these cars was ground-breaking and delivered the smooth, refined, effortless power that characterises the Jaguar experience. 1998 saw the introduction of the Supercharged “R” model delivering 0-60 in under 5 seconds and a governed top speed of 155MPH. Supercar performance and stunning looks were blended with the luxury, opulence and comfort.

This beautiful convertible is presented in stunning “Gunmetal Grey" over a cream leather interior. The car comes to auction from ~7 years with its current owner and has benefitted from extensive works amounting to over £11,000 in that time. This is a car that looks fantastic, drives wonderfully and benefits from careful and diligent ownership, demonstrated by a comprehensive history file. With an MOT until May 2023 and recent service history this completely unmodified big cat is ready to use and enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Bob the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It is a beautiful looking vehicle with a nod to the E-Type - It still drives superbly, but with a great turn of speed should you require it!

Bob is a long-time fan of Jaguars. He tells us “This was my third Jaguar, and I wanted a top for the range, XKR open top sports car. This one had a full-service history and a brilliant colour combination; I really like the cream leather and gunmetal grey”.

He goes on to say “It’s a great drive for days out in the summer, or to take to Jaguar or classic car events. (I am a member of Jaguar Drivers Club), It’s also beautiful to drive on motorways, very quiet, wonderful sound system, and cruise control”. In keeping with his love of Jaguars Bob has purchased an F-Type so the XXR is looking for a new home. Bob will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

All the mystery, character and presence of a feline predator – elegant flowing lines presented in stunning Gunmetal Grey.

Wheels and Tyres

The 20-inch alloy, split rim BBS wheels present in good condition, with some kerb marks to the outer bezel which Bob confirms can be replaced relatively easily if required.

The wheels are wearing Pirelli P Zero 285/30/ZR20 tyres all round which were renewed in 2016. The tyres appear in great condition with good tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines appear good and bonnet, doors and boot all open and close with precision. The black hood looks in great condition and operates smoothly. The car has benefitted from significant expenditure to the bodywork in current ownership and the underside was cleaned and waxoyled in 2021.

There are some signs of corrosion on close inspection to the front wheel arches and outer sills as can be seen from the images. Elsewhere the bodywork appears sound. We could see only minor age-related marks and small areas of bubbling, most notably on the lip of the boot lid and the offside front wing.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Gunmetal Grey" is a superb colour and suits the flowing lines of this car perfectly. The finish is consistent and even with a deep shine. There are a few stone chips, scuffs, and marks, entirely consistent with the age and mileage. Overall though, the car looks good.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows and mirrors are clear and undamaged, without chips and free from scratching. Lights and lenses also look great without any signs of damage or clouding.

Interior

Trademark burr walnut dash and stunning ivory leather seats - every inch Jaguar opulence and luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The ivory leather seats are in remarkable condition with only minor signs of wear to the driver’s seat bolster and squab. While the front seats show some signs of use the rear seats appear in almost unused condition.

The coffee-coloured carpets are in very good condition with no apparent rips or tears. The headlining and interior trim are in great condition and the interior is in very good shape.

Dashboard

The polished burr walnut dash, a Jaguar trademark, presents very well and we could see no sign of cracks or peeling. The instruments, dials and switches all look great.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather and wood steering wheel looks in great condition and the drive selector in its burr walnut mounting presents really well.

Take a look at the interior video and high-resolution images to get real sense of this luxury, sporting cabin

Mechanics

Supercharged V8 combines with Jaguars legendary drivetrain to deliver smooth, effortless acceleration - intoxicating!

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.2 Litre Jaguar V8 transfers 416BHP to the rear wheels through a silky smooth 5-speed automatic gearbox. This wonderful combination provides 0 to 60 in a shade under 5 seconds and a 155mph top speed.

Check out the "On The Road" video to see that following the cold start the car immediately settles down to a steady idle, there are no warning lights, and the emissions appear clear.

Suspension and Brakes

With vented discs front and rear you can be assured this 416bhp car can be arrested when required. The ABS was overhauled in 2019 and, viewed through the 20-inch alloys, the brake calipers look fantastic.

Bob assures us brakes and suspension work exactly as they should. This is Jaguar engineering after all.

The Drive

The XKR is worthy of the Jaguar name and it's place in that prestigious lineage. It’s certain, quiet, and stable with a sense of raw potential. The ride is smooth, there are no untoward knocks, bangs or rattles and the car is serene and comfortable.

Check out the "On The Road" video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

This XKR has the benefit of electric hood, windows, and door mirrors together with heated seats, all of which Bob assures us work exactly as they should. There were no apparent issues on the test drive we shared with Bob.

History and Paperwork

These XKR’s offer fantastic value and 4.2 convertibles are the pick of the bunch, this one offers a fantastic colourway, great interior and has had £1,000’s spent on it.

The stunning "Gunmetal Grey" exterior and ivory leather trim accentuate the flowing, feline lines making this car look both beautiful and capable.

With an MOT until May 2023, good service history and a comprehensive history file with receipts for major body works, ABS overhaul and maintenance of brakes, suspension and steering, this XKR has enjoyed conscientious and diligent ownership. The XKR offers fantastic motoring and highly likely some sound investment potential.
