Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

In keeping with the tradition of the marque, the balance of design and power produced a beautiful GT.

At the Geneva Motor Show in 1996, the Jaguar XK8 was launched to critical acclaim. With unmistakable Jaguar DNA, this new tourer, styled by Fergus Pollock, embodied beauty, elegance, and power. Available in both coupé and convertible versions, over 91,000 of these cars found owners, with many heading to the USA. Sharing a platform with the Aston Martin DB7, the XK8 introduced Jaguar’s first in-house V8 engine, as previous models had successfully utilised the Daimler V8. However, the 32-valve AJ-V8 engine in the XK8 was groundbreaking, delivering the smooth, refined, effortless power that defines the Jaguar experience. In 1998, the supercharged “R” model was introduced, achieving 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph. This blend of supercar performance, stunning design, luxury, and comfort truly set the XKR apart.

This lovely convertible comes to market after ~2 years with the current owner, presented in "Ammonite Grey" over an "Ivory" interior. The car has had money spent on cosmetic and mechanical maintenance over the years and has just recently passed its annual MOT, making it ready to be enjoyed by a new Jaguar enthusiast.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a huge fan of the colour, it complements the shape of the car so well, and of course, I can't forget to mention the supercharged V8!

This isn't Simon's first XKR; as a long-time Jaguar enthusiast, he knew exactly what he was looking for when seeking a new addition to his collection. He tells us “I love this car and the way it drives. The supercharged V8 engine is very responsive and powerful, but what really drew me in was the colour. You rarely see them in 'Ammonite Grey' over Ivory, and I think it looks timeless”.

Simon originally purchased the car from us on auction. Now, as he needs valuable garage space, he is bringing the car back to market. Simon will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in elegant Ammonite Grey, this colour pairs beautifully with the sweeping body lines and curvaceous looks of the XKR.

Wheels and Tyres

The 20" split rim BBS wheels are finished in silver, and generally look in decent condition. There are some signs of age to the lacquer in places, and marks that you'd expect to come from ~100,000 miles.

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres, and these also appear to be in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking on the side walls, dated 2020. - We did notice a some rubber missing from the rear nearside tyre. View the image gallery.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this XKR looks in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car appearing to align well. During our visit we only noticed some very small areas of wear. On the bonnet we noticed some small area of stone chips, a small scuff on the rear bumper, a small area of bubbling at the rear nearside light cluster, and some imperfections on the black nearside window trim.

We've provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a rare "Ammonite Grey", the paint is applied with even coverage across each panel. We did notice the occasional stone chip at the front of the car, and the front bumper has likely seen paint in the past based on it showing a slightly different shade in certain angles. Additionally, we observed some very minor lacquer peel on the bonnet.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this XKR looks great and is in line with the mileage. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals also look good and align with the overall condition of the car.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in great condition as well. We did notice some wear to the nearside window trim. You can see in the exterior photos that the convertible top is in great condition with no tears or rips. Simon rarely drives the car with the top up, as he drives the car only in dry weather.

Interior

The Ivory leather sport seats have aged remarkably well, crafted from the finest materials.

Seats and Carpets

The "Ivory" leather seats look great and have held their shape very well over the years, as you would expect with cherished and careful ownership. As pictured, there is creasing on the drivers seat, inline with the mileage of the car, but no obvious rips/tears etc.

A similar story is told with the door cards and carpets, the latter showing their age through some level of colour fade. For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in a complimentary contrast leather with beautiful glossy wood burl veneer.

The dashboard in this XKR shows no signs of major damage or scuffs, with no warning lights displayed. The odometer showed a reading of ~101,744 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A leather wrapped Jaguar steering wheel is fitted, with controls for the cruise control. The original steering wheel is in great condition, aligning with the mileage of this car, and the "R" badged automatic gearstick looks good too. For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

The supercharged V8 offers effortless acceleration while the chassis set-up provides a smooth journey for all passengers.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by a 4.2L V8, supercharged on this "R" model. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road, the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Simon reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the XKR and the smart engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension gave a smooth, comfortable ride, as you would expect with a grand tourer. We didn't notice ant unwanted noises coming from underneath the car when on the road with Simon.

With vented discs front and rear you can be assured this car can handle the power. The ABS was overhauled in 2019, during our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a sports car from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

Simon has loved using the car locally around Bristol on sunny weekends.

The XKR fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Simon, the car felt very comfortable, watch the video to see the car in action.

Electrics and Other

The Jaguar still has its original car phone un the centre console. We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Simon reports that, to his knowledge, all of the electrics are functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

This convertible XKR comes to market from ~2 year ownership, just 4 former keepers, has covered limited mileage recently and has a keen auction reserve, presenting a great opportunity to get into modern classic ownership.

The car is coming out of a ~2 year ownership with Simon. Purchased back in 2022 from us at auction, the current owner has thoroughly enjoyed his time with this lovely XKR, covering limited miles locally. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT report, servicing and parts this supercharged XKR has received over its life.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
