Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The Land Rover has been around since 1948, heavily inspired by the Jeeps used in World War 2.

Series Land Rovers were in production for ~37 years, when in 1985 the Defender name was born. The Series Land Rover was know for its hardy off-roading ability and iconic looks. Over the years there were three main Series models, Series 1 from 1948-1958, Series 2 from 1958-1961 and Series 3 from 1971-1985. Between 1961-1971 the Series 2a was available, of which this particular car is. Very little changed over the years, new engines were made available with a 2.25L diesel and later a 2.6L inline six. One of the more noticeable changes in later Series IIA models was the placement of the headlights on the wings.

This car comes to market after ~18 months of ownership, it has received a fair amount of work in this time including; new cam belt, glow plugs, steering box top bearing and fuel sender/gauge all in 2022. The seller has just had a fresh MOT actioned on the car which involved some work to the tune of ~£900, big ticket items being; front tyre replacements, suspension maintenance as needed, some electrical repairs.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Jamie the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

For me Land Rovers have always been the most important vehicle ever made in the UK, arguably the world.

Jamie always admired the beauty of industrial design, after seeing this Series 2a around his village and when he heard the local farmer was selling it, he had to have it. The emotional connection didn't take long to form, he loves the adventurous nature of the car and the fact it can be used everyday. Jamie loves the fact the Series 2a has everything it needs and not anything more, simplicity.

He describes the car as honest, it's in great nick but also has some character with a few marks etc that are expected to come with time. Jamie has enjoyed his time with the Series 2a, he told us it's a rugged machine that can take anything thrown at it, as long as you look after it, it'll never let you down. He hopes it goes to someone who will enjoy it as much as he has. Jamie will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

With rugged good looks, and in the short wheelbase form, this Series 2a Land Rover is an icon of British motoring.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with white painted steel wheels and knobbly tyres, this Land Rover is purposeful. There are some imperfections on the paint finish of the wheels, not a bad thing as it adds to the character we think. We did notice a little bit of visible corrosion on a couple of the wheels but nothing of major concern.

The chunky tyres were two matching pairs, Deestone at the front and Nankang at the back. As part of getting the car MOTd, the front tyres are being replaced and have since been fitted to the car, we'll update the listing with pictures of these once supplied.

Bodywork

The bodywork looked in ok condition, we did notice a few dents and scratches around the car, such as; a dent on the front drivers side wing just behind the wheel, a few scratches and cracks in the paint at the top of the same wing. The drivers door seemed to line up a little bit low looking at the crease line in the door, typical for a Land Rover of this era.

The car has been used on a farm previously so we expected some character due to this. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The light green paint looked to be in ok condition, there were a few places where the paint had been peeling; a couple areas of the tail-gate and the top of the front wings. The drivers side rear quarter also looked to have a couple of big scratches on it. With such a utilitarian vehicle we guess you can't expect perfect paint.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass around the Land Rover looked in great condition, we didn't notice any discolouration, chips or cracks in any of the glass, the sliding side windows are also a nice feature.

Trim around the car looked in ok condition too, the front bumper looked in good shape, we did notice a little bit of corrosion on the trim around the top of the tailgate and the bonnet latches too. Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Featuring a 3-seat layout and 8-ball gearstick, the charm continues inside.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are covered in vinyl and looked in decent condition, we did notice a couple scratches on the seats but nothing major, there was also a slight bit of sag in the bottom of the drivers sear.

Rubber mats were on the floor of the Land Rover, for ease of cleaning; very practical. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

A very simple dash greets the driver, with some toggle switches for lights and heater etc.

The dials have been customised with some stickers to show the actual speed better as you can see in the photos.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We noticed some of the stitching had come away from the steering wheel, this should be reasonably easy to fix for someone handy with a sewing kit. The wheel looked in good condition apart from this.

The gearstick features an 8-ball top to it, which looked in good condition. The stick itself did look to have some chips to the paint on it. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

With a 200TDi engine under the bonnet, new gearbox and power steering; this is a Series 2a you could use daily.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up first time with no issues, to sounded great on the road too. Gear changes were smooth, we didn't notice any crunching from the gears either.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

Some heavy duty leaf-springs are used on the Land Rover, which give as comfortable ride as you'd expect on a car of this era. The brakes were working well too, with no squeaking noticed on our drive with Jamie.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

On our drive with Jamie the Land Rover felt great, plenty of torque from the engine, gears were engaging well too. It was a comfortable place to be with the suspension giving a smooth ride and brakes performing well.

There was quite a lot of engine noise in the cabin, but not too overbearing, we loved it. It does feel like an event taking it out. To see the Series 2a in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

There's not much electric to mention, lights and gauges mainly and all seemed to be working well. An AUX connection has been fitted along with some speakers in the door so you can enjoy your music on the go.

History and Paperwork

With some modern updates including a new gearbox and 200TDi engine, this Series 2a is more usable than ever.

Jamie has carried out a lot of work on this Land Rover over the last ~18 months including; in 2021 spring bushes, steering box seal, both rear outer and rear hub seals and rear wheel bearing were all changed and a new fuel lift pump was fitted. 2022 saw the a full service completed as well as a cambelt, glow plugs, seat belts, new steering box top bearing, fuel sender and gauge being fitted. He has just had a fresh MOT actioned on the car which involved some work to the tune of ~£900, big ticket items being; front tyre replacements, suspension maintenance as needed, some electrical repairs.

Overall this Land Rover Series 2a has plenty of character, and is more than usable both as a leisure vehicle or a workhorse.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
