Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner and Photographer

Historic classic meets 21st century with a wealth of upgrades and overhauled originality.

A beautiful classic that has had a host of improvements added to this historic vehicle. With several commissioned works the Range Rover has really been bought back to the 21st century with its upgrades, the car has had a full engine rebuild with a high compression 3.5 V8 engine and a manual gearbox with overdrive fitted in 2019 at a cost of ~£5,500 by a well known Land Rover specialist.

Not only that but, the Classic Suffix A has benefitted from a full service, brake overhaul, new John Craddock suspension kit (lowering the height of the car by 1 inch and replacing the old progressive road springs). New, original wheels were also added with 245/70/16 General Grabber AT tyres fitted.

The interior was re-trimmed, new carpets installed, front and rear seats updated and later model headrests added. The interior treatment was completed by Exmoor trim, and finished in Range Rover herringbone cloth. Finally, the bodywork was refurbished along with the bumpers, trims at a cost of ~£12,650.

All the subtle work has kept the desired originality, but also transforms the Range Rover into a real period classic right up to speed with modern day touches.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

With a host of improvements added, the 'Range' drives incredibly well, with sharpened steering, more stability and a full engine, interior and exterior overhaul.

After falling in love with the Range Rover, Andrew decided to purchase the car and bring it back to its former glory with a serious investment in the mechanics and look and feel.

Purchased from the previous owner who had owned the car since 2012 and kept it indoors for the majority of that time, Andrew had a full engine rebuild with a high compression 3.5 V8 engine commissioned and also had a manual gearbox with overdrive fitted at a cost of £5,500.

The next steps for Andrew was to focus on the rest of the mechanical elements, giving the car a full service, brake overhaul, and fitting a John Craddock suspension kit on it, lowering the height of the car by 1 inch and replacing the old progressive road springs.

Following this, new original wheels were installed with 245/70/16 General Grabber AT tyres added. Andrew didn't stop there - refurbishing the bodywork, bumpers and trims. Interior re trim was up next adding new carpets, front and rear seats and later model headrests fitted. The work was completed by Exmoor trim, and keeps the classic Range Rover herringbone cloth. All together the additional work was actioned at a cost of around ~£12,650.

Andrew told us, "I made some subtle period upgrades, but I wanted to keep the Range Rover in its originality. It has given me great pleasure in making this lovely old Range Rover beautiful again. As she sits so well in the countryside and just looks so great".

Although except from MOT checks, the car will be supplied with a new MOT for the new keepers peace of mind.

Exterior

A classic approach to tasteful restoration has resulted in seriously impressive quality and era relevant styling.

Wheels and Tyres

Original style but new, Land Rover / Range Rover 16" wheels have been fitted to keep a classic touch on the car but bringing it up to modern day standards. A subtle period relevant upgrade that preserves the original quality.

The tyres are newly fitted 245/70/16 General Grabber AT tyres. Take a look over the exterior gallery section for a close up view of the wheels and tyres on the Range Rover and how the refurbishment work has really benefitted the car.

Bodywork

Preserving the originality was key as part of this restoration project with the bodywork, bumpers, trims all being worked on at a cost of ~£12,650. The bodywork is a real work of art in this historic example keeping the Range Rover in its classic style but with an updated finish.

The only sections that we had to look twice at were a few sections of interior trim that were missing. On the B pillars some elements of trim were missing along with a section of the boot trim that was missing. This was only an observation when looking over the car and something that may be able to be sourced at a later date.

Aligning beautifully across the panelling and looking exceptional on the road, the car really stands out on its own looking equally comfortable in and around town as it does out in the countryside.

Paint

Presented in a really stunning manner the resprayed Lincoln Green paint job is excellent across the whole car with no apparent signs of overspray. With such a great finish you can see the effort that has gone into making sure the panels were prepared well and kept neat throughout the process.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all presented in excellent condition, with no obvious scratches or chips which we could see at the time of our visit. The trims and seals are the same, matching the rest of the vehicle.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking vehicle the Range Rover Classic Suffix A really is.

Interior

The restoration work hasn't just stopped with the exterior and mechanical elements, originality and quality keeps the upgraded interior looking tasteful and era relevant.

Seats and Carpets

Herringbone trim adorns the seating which looks excellent in the cabin area. The seats are comfortable and inviting and give the interior a new lease of life preserving original style but with an updated fresh feel. The rear seats have had a tasteful upgrade also replacing the original parts with seating that matches the passenger and driver sections.

New carpets and heading provided by Exmoor have been installed through the Classic Suffix A, which match the quality of the rest of the interior sections.

Dashboard

Presented without cracks, splits or blemishes the dash area looks excellent alongside the rest of the interior. Dials and gauges all look excellent showing without fogging or issue on our visit, reflective of the car and attention that has been given to the Range Rover as part of the restoration work carried out.

Head over to the interior gallery for more detailed images of the dash area and how well this is presented.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has been updated with a leather bound example, again, reflecting the rest of the interior, this shows in a great way. A classic 4 spoke approach is simple, stylish and keeps the original approach to the Suffix A.

Gear knob, manual overdrive selector are all trimmed with the new Exmoor carpets and look great. Overall, a really impressive piece of restoration work all the way through the cabin area.

Mechanics

With a full engine rebuild in 2019, the high compression 3.5 V8 engine with manual overdrive was commissioned at a cost of ~£5,500.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine was completely rebuilt in 2016 - the new 3.5L V8 was sounding lovely when out on our visit. A full service was carried out in November 2022 with new air filters, oil filter, spark plugs and oil being changed as part of this.

The engine and 4 speed manual transmission showed no signs of concern when we started the Range Rover up, or took the car out on the road. Take a look at our "Mechanical Review" video where we see the Suffix A starting up and running.

Suspension and Brakes

A set of John Craddock road springs were supplied by the Land Rover specialist to the Range Rover in November 2022. As mentioned, this upgrade lowered the ride height by 1 inch across the car replacing the old progressive road springs. As part of the previous restoration work, the brakes have also been overhauled to improve the responsiveness of the Suffix A.

We noted no issues with the suspension or brakes whilst out on the road, with the mechanical components working as to be expected. Take a look at our 'On the Road' video to see in real time how the car responds to the road and driving.

The Drive

The ride out in the Range Rover was a really enjoyable journey, sound deadening sections have been installed under the front carpet sections which takes some of the typical travel noise out of the interior when driving.

With the added John Craddock Land Rover specialist handling kit installed in November 2022, the car is a really solid example that drives well, improved steering from original and has a reduction in body roll thanks to it being lowered by 1 inch across the vehicle.

Electrics and Other

Oil temperature, analogue clock, oil pressure and voltage gauges were all working with no issues observed on our visit.

If any further questions are needed about the electronic functions within the Range Rover, these can be added in the comments section at the base of the listing where Andrew can provide any updates required.

Hi, do you trade as Winsford Classic Cars and if so, was this Range Rover repaired by yourself?

Hi Andrew. Lovely looking Range Rover. Is there anyway you can validate the supplied invoices from Winsford Classics. It does seem like a poorly constructed invoice and is of course missing the VAT element. I see that the ‘motor trade’ section of the V5 is missing and that Winsford Classics is currently run by a director by the name of Andrew. Can you confirm if this is a private sale? Do you only have the history and paperwork supplied with the advert? Do you happen to have any images on file of when the body was returned to bare metal prior to painting? Thanks in advance

Hi Andrew, a lovely vehicle from what I can see online – for 50 years old, has the vehicle only covered 37000 miles? Seems incredibly low! Is this a genuine mileage?
