Introduction

Richard Gormley
Automotive Writer & Photographer

A motoring legend - it’s hard to imagine a more recognisable, practical, and enduring classic than the iconic Land Rover.

The 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show witnessed the launch of the Series 1 Land Rover which laid the foundation for a production series that still exists today. Responding to the post war climate, Rover designer, Maurice Wilks recognised the need for a utilitarian vehicle that could make use of the limited materials then available. A clear departure from Rover’s traditional offering of opulent executive saloons, the Land Rover was originally seen as a ‘stop gap’ while a new range of traditional designs could be developed. The vehicle was an immediate success however and quickly established a place in the hearts of customers the word over. Released in 1972 the Series III is still firmly connected to the original Land Rover lineage following the model’s tradition of incremental improvements. The new range offered a number of improvements including an uprated heater, a new dashboard, an alternator and Synchromesh on 2nd gear.

This 1975 Series 3 comes to market following just over two years ownership. It’s not without a few battle scars, and there and needs a bit of love but appears straight and generally solid. Originally a petrol version the car has been retrofitted with a diesel engine at some point in the past, most likely the 2.25L unit that was also available in period and a fairly commonplace conversion.

This listing was written from information supplied by Richard after meeting Aidan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Land Rover has been great – it’s one of those cars I always wanted.

Aidan, always wanted a Land Rover and when this Series 3 came up he had to give it a go. He tells us “We've used this land rover for all sorts of adventures including trips to the coast, it's loads of fun and up for anything”. He goes on to say “The drive is very different from any other vehicle, the sound of the engine and the classic interior all adds to the experience. The family have loved it and it always makes people smile”.

“Unfortunately, we simply don’t use it enough, so it really needs to go to a good home”. Aidan would be happy to answer any questions about his Land Rover in the comments section below.

Exterior

Rugged, practical and instantly recognisable – box section chassis and single radius curves offer a magical blend of utility and classic charm.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16-inch painted, pressed steel wheels look in sound condition with only minor wear and ageing visible. They are fitted with Kingpin Hilander 7.50 R16 Radial tyres all round which appear in good condition, have good tread remaining and we could see no significant splits or cracks in the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears straight with no significant damage or panel distortion. The doors open and close cleanly and reassuringly. The canvas soft top and frame present well and fits properly. This has been a working vehicle so there are the inevitable dents and dings together with some surface rust on the chassis.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Hand painted in "standard" Land Rover Green, the finish is tired in places, and there is some inconsistency and flaking, most notably along the panel joints and seals as pictured. As would be expected on a utility vehicle of this nature, the paint has a some chips here and there, but the car still continues to do its job.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen and sliding side windows appear clear and unbroken and mirrors look good. We could see no damage to lights and lenses which all appear to present well.

The painted trim looks in ok condition as do the silver painted fittings, but both have paint flaking again as per the body. These have been touched up to prevent corrosion in places.

Interior

As tough and functional in the cabin as it is elsewhere – The Series III “office” is designed as a place of work.

Seats and Carpets

Vinyl seats with 3 up front, appear in good condition with no significant rips, tears, or indentations to note. Relatively new rubber floor mats appear to have been fitted and the floor underneath appears sound too.

Dashboard

The Series III saw the introduction of the modernised dash which placed the instruments directly in front of the driver. The dash is showing some wear although the and gauges are easy to read with no glass broken. The interior is well used but, functionality is the watchword here, and the interior certainly appears to have life in it yet.

Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you can assess the condition for yourself.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Bakelite steering wheel appears in sound condition and the gear lever, four-wheel drive and ratio selection levers all look solid and unbroken.

Mechanics

Fitted with a classic and industrious diesel engine, this Series 3 would make a great workhorse.

Engine and Gearbox

Originally a petrol model, this Land Rover has been retrofitted with a diesel engine at some point in its life. Most likely a 2.25L unit has been used which were available in period and is a fairly common and uncomplicated conversion.

On our cold start the engine started easily after warming the glow plugs and the car idled steadily. Do check out the cold start video to see for yourself, and see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with leaf spring suspension front and rear together with drum brakes all round these Land Rovers are of their time. The ride seemed compliant, and the vehicle pulled up evenly.

The Drive

Well, this is a Land Rover – the drive is rugged, a little agricultural and fantastic fun. The car drove exactly as it should, steering seemed positive, brakes worked well, and gear changes seemed clean and precise.

Check out the On the Road video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

Land Rovers are uncomplicated by nature and the electrics are basic and straightforward. All switchgear appeared undamaged, and Aidan assured us everything works exactly as it should. There’s even a Radio/CD player and speakers fitted.

History and Paperwork

A key part of Britain’s motoring history - a chance to own one of the most practical and affordable models in the classic Land Rover range.

This is a useable Series III that’s ready to enjoy. Ok, so it’s not going to win any shows but that’s not what owning a Land Rover is about really. Everyone loves a Land Rover, and the Series 3 is becoming increasingly collectable – and why not, is there a more useable classic?

Being last MOT’d in 2008 there’s no further history with the car. It is tax and MOT exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
