Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Enough torque to plough across any terrain, the Series III is an iconic Land Rover design.

First introduced to the world in 1971, and carrying over from the Series 2 and 2a with a fresh face-lift, the Series III featured a fully synchromesh four-speed gearbox, front-mounted headlights, stylish plastic grille and various mechanical improvements over its predecessors. These classic Land Rovers gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility, they were used for both emergency services and for military purposes.

This Series III has seen a restoration and a conversion to a "County Station Wagon", the car receiving a new chassis and paint, as well as attending to any previous corrosion around the car. This example is coming to market from ~3 year ownership, it's a highly practical classic ideal for use on farms and around the countryside, now both MOT and Road Tax exempt.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Geoff the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always been a Land Rover fan at heart, previously owning a Series I, I had a hankering to restore one.

Many years ago Geoff enjoyed ownership of a Series I Land Rover and since has always been interested in completing a restoration. His neighbour had decided to part with this Series III and Geoff saw it as the perfect opportunity to undertake his first restoration and give this Series III a new lease of life.

Over Geoff's 3 years of ownership, he has refreshed the cabin, attended to any corrosion and fixed minor cosmetic blemishes as well as installing a new fuel system.

After restoring this Series III, Geoff has now got the feel for it and wishes to find a new project to take on, therefore it comes to market on auction. He'll be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

The Series III saw some styling improvements and the addition of front wing mounted headlights.

Wheels and Tyres

Equipped for any off-road adventure with Modular Series III wheels, these have been painted in period correct 'Limestone'. They are wrapped in Event ML698 tyres with desirable Fairey free wheeling hubs.

The wheels appear in good condition, with the tyres dated 2013, and Geoff reporting very little off-road use, the rubber looks to have a lots of tread left for the new owner.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this classic example appears good condition, the gaps and shut lines looking inline and good for a Series III. We noticed some little dents and knocks along the side of the truck. The bulkhead is showing some very minor signs of corrosion under the paint on both sides.

The underside of the car looks good and free from any major corrosion, which can be seen in the mechanical photos. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Geoff has decided to finish the Series III in its original colour, 'Bronze Green', which really suits the truck. The finish of the paint appears in ok condition, as with many cars of this era and ilk, some of the paint looks to have been applied by hand.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show the Land Rover as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim, which Geoff has painted silver. He has also painted the front bumper in silver with a wrinkle effect, and painted the sills black.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

This Series III features a desirable rear catflap with rare, complicated hinges with all the parts present and in full working order.

Interior

Upgraded to a County Wagon as part of the restoration, enough room for 5 in this SWB.

Seats and Carpets

Geoff has carried out a lovely restoration of this very usable classics cabin. The truck is fitted with three deluxe seats at the front with internal ribs which appear in very good condition. In the rear, you'll also find two fold-down front facing rear seats with three-point seatbelts, these appear in new condition.

He has also fitted new leatherette door cards, and new door seals, and the seat boxes look good with no common corrosion issues.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition, and in overall great condition for its age, there are only very light marks on the top rather than the usual cracking.

The odometer reported 87,262 miles on our visit. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Series III Land Rover steering wheel is fitted with a black painted central hub. The car also features its original gearstick, range selector, and hand break - all items appear in good usable condition in line with the rest of the car.

An additional lever is the Fairey overdrive selector. View the media pack to see the details.

Mechanics

Travel across any terrain the journey throws at you, with this 2.25L diesel-powered Series III, the addition of overdrive makes travelling at speed a breeze.

Engine and Gearbox

The Land Rover Series III is powered by an inline-4 2.25L offering the driver ~70BHP to tap into, with an optional overdrive by Fairey Winched Ltd - a rare and desirable extra.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

Geoff reports suspension and brakes work very well, the car featured the classic leaf spring setup. Take a closer look at the brakes and suspension set up in the mechanical photos and videos.

The Drive

The SWB series III is a great versatile classic, offering practical hauling capabilities while being able to travel over any terrain you throw at it.

Geoff mentions the truck offers a unique experience, one that'll make you smile wherever you decide to venture.

Electrics and Other

Geoff reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A recently restored Bronze Green SWB upgraded to County Station Wagon specification with lots of mechanical 'Fairey' features such as overdrive and free wheeling hubs - a practical classic workhorse.

This SWB 88" Series III is ready to be put to work again after Geoff's restoration. Take a look at the detailed mechanical photos to see the underside of this car. The car comes with a good amount of paperwork in the form of MOT certificates and parts receipts. Take a look at the media pack to see the work carried out over the previous years.

Geoff will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.
