Introduction

Jon Dixon
Professional Consigner

The iconic and extremely practical off-road vehicle of choice - the Land Rover 110.

The Defender we all know and love today was originally introduced as the 'Land Rover 110' when production started in 1983. The name reflected the 110-inch wheelbase. There were also subtle changes made to distinguish the post 1983 vehicles from the Series III - a full-length bonnet, revised grille, and fitted wheel arch extensions.

Mechanically, the 110 was modernised with coil springs, a permanent 4-wheel-drive from the Range Rover, a one-piece windscreen, and progressive more powerful engines.

This 110 has been fully restored between 2019-2021 by Andy the current owner, he has given this pick-up workhorse a completely new lease of life and finished it in the classic Chawton White.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jon after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I am passionate about Land Rovers and couldn't pass on the opportunity to restore this lovely example.

Andy purchased the car in 2019 with the intention of upgrading and restoring it, and he's done just that. It certainly looks like Andy brought the car up to a really high standard - some of the work he has had carried out included: shot blasting, galvanising and painting the bulkhead; replacing the sills, the cloth seats, and headlining. Andy has created a long and detailed spreadsheet in the paperwork section below with all the parts he used, and the businesses he sourced them from. He's also mentioned that the car has had an engine upgrade to the more desirable 200Tdi (11L) engine at some point before his ownership.

After completing the 2-year build, Andy is now looking out for his next project and therefore needs to make space, hence finding this 110 pick-up a new custodian. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

A car which has aged so well, it's never been out of fashion - the aluminium boxy design is very similar to the 1948 original.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on its original 16" black-painted wheels, which look in good condition all around, including the full-size spare in the rear pick-up bed.

The tyres are Insta Turbo Sahara 4x4, with a brand new set on the front, all look to have a great amount of tread left as shown.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in great condition following the restoration of the car. The panel gaps and shut lines appear very straight, great to see on a Land Rover of this era. The previous owner fitted a galvanised chassis to the car, and painted it black, this example should be good for many years to come as a result.

Being picky, we noticed one area which is a small dent on the passenger side. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the bodywork on this hardy 4x4.

Paint

The Defender is finished in a glossy Chawton White, which appears in excellent condition around the car.

The paint on each panel presents well with even coverage and colour throughout.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals show very little signs of wear or degrading.

Interior

An off-road utility vehicle needs a hardy interior and that's where the 110's simple yet practical cabin space comes in.

Seats and Carpets

Cloth seats are fitted for a comfortable ride - they are showing some very minor stains, nothing a deep detail wouldn't fix.

The car has rubber floor mats, as you'd expect for a utility vehicle, all of which are very clean and appear newly fitted.

Overall in good condition, and fitted with a central third seat.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition and shows little wear.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the classic Land Rover steering wheel, it looks in good condition inside this iconic 4x4.

The gearstick and range selector also look in good condition and in line with the original items on this car.

Mechanics

The Defender really shines off-road thanks to its permanent 4-wheel-drive and the 2.5-litre diesel which pulls like a train.

Engine and Gearbox

This car is fitted with the 200Tdi (engine code 11L) 2.5L version of the diesel engine producing ~111BHP. Andy informs us that this upgrade happened before his ownership, he's not certain when exactly.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. Andy has told us that there is some slight back slap on one of the prop shafts, he says this can be heard when slowing down from high speeds, normal for old land rovers at 40mph and above.

Suspension and Brakes

In 1983, the switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key part of the 110's success. It offered improved off-road ability, load capacity, handling, and importantly ride comfort.

Andy reports attending to the suspension and brakes during the restoration and mentions they work very well, a comfortable ride with stopping on-demand performance is provided.

The Drive

The 110 is an awesome all-rounder, it's practical and spacious. The 110 offers a unique experience, one that'll make you smile wherever you decided to venture.

With the large pickup bed, the car is ideal for hauling large items.

We also went in the car to the shooting location, the car performed without fault during this drive.

Electrics and Other

Andy reports all the electrics, buttons, and knobs etc work within the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Andy's done all the work, so you don't have to - this RHD Land Rover 110 high capacity pick-up has been restored to a very high standard, it's ready to be enjoyed and loved by a new custodian.

The car comes with stacks of paperwork, shown in the paperwork section. The spreadsheet shows the amount of time and money Andy has poured into this restoration. It's been a labour of love and just look at how good the car looks today, and with that important engine upgrade to an "11L" 200Tdi engine in the past. They also fitted a galvanised chassis to the car, and subsequently painted it black for protection, an important factor to consider when looking at Defenders of this era.

This 110 has a clean MOT report history. Andy will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.
