Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The Defender needs no introduction - instantly recognisable as one of the most well-known 4x4 vehicles ever made.

The Defender name didn't come around until 1992; however, the shape has been present since 1948. First known as the 'Land Rover,' it was originally built as a utility vehicle aimed at farmers and industry and then picked up by the military. The 110 first made an appearance in 1984. The mid-wheel base version 110 denotes this is a 110" wheelbase. The Defender is loved the world over, from farmers to trendy city folk, for good reason, as it can handle almost any terrain imaginable and look incredibly stylish.

This Defender 110 was restored approximately ten years ago, it has been family owned for over 10 years, with only 3 former keepers. It features an all-important galvanised chassis and bulkhead upgrade, along with a fully rebuilt 300 TDi engine conversion making it an extremely good buy for anyone looking for a 110.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Susan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

My late brother had everything restored on the Defender, so it was exactly how he wanted it.

Susans brother bought the Defender in a very poor state. He decided to completely strip it down to the chassis and rebuild it to the specification he wanted. He replaced the engine, reupholstered the interior, sprayed it in the lovely blue colour and fitted the off-road tyres.

Just after the restoration, the Land Rover was his pride and joy and he used it regularly for several years, taking it on many shooting trips. However, since his passing, it has only covered just under ~200 miles which has brought about the reason for the sale of the classic Defender 110. Since his passing, the car has been kept at the garage that carried out the restoration and rebuild of the car. Please feel free to ask Susan any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Fully repainted 10 years ago, there is the odd mark here and there, but this is in keeping with the off-road appearance.

Wheels and Tyres

Upgraded to Modular steel wheels, these are in good condition with just some light age-related marks which could easily be rectified with a repaint.

The tyres are BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain, and the fronts are a few years newer than the rear and in excellent condition. The rears do have some signs of wear and cracking to the tread. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the Land Rover, a small ding has been picked up on the corner of the nearside wing. The doors look to align as they should; these require a firm close to shut because of the new door seals, but you may be able to adjust the door striker plate to improve this. There is a small amount of corrosion around some of the aluminium sections of the body, but this is quite common.

The underside of the Defender is in excellent condition. The chassis and bulkhead have been replaced with galvanised items which, as you probably know, are massive plus points for any Land Rover of this age.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Defender has been finished in a bright blue, which looks great. Again there are some odd chips here and there, caused whilst being in storage and possibly a small amount of off-roading which it has been taken on. So there is the odd blemish here and there, but nothing excessive.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look in good condition, with no apparent scratches on the side or rear windows. It is also worth noting that a heated windscreen is fitted, but this has not been tested. The window trims and seals are in good condition, with little to no signs of age. Electric windows have also been fitted, which are in good working order.

The headlights are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The other small lamps used for the indicators and rear lights are also in good condition. In addition, there are two roof-mounted rear spotlights which are both working and operated by a switch in the centre console.

The Defender has been fitted with chequer plate to the bonnet and wings, a later-style grille has been fitted, and the bumpers have been changed to a tube-style bumper at the front and one with a built-in step on the rear. The plastic wheel arch extensions are in good condition, with no apparent sign of scuffs. A set of Rockslider sill protectors are installed, helping prevent the body from unwanted damage. A small door is fitted to the nearside, which covers a small storage compartment which is handy for keeping fuel and tools inside.

Interior

Improved and renovated in the current ownership this Defender comes with electric windows.

Seats and Carpets

The seats have been replaced with some Land Rover logo material. These are in excellent condition and show no signs of excessive wear to the faces. The rear has been fitted out in a hard-wearing material similar to what would be used inside a trailer base.

Rubber flooring is fitted along with some heavy-duty rubber mats, which all look in good condition with just a small amount of age-related wear. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is typical of its age; there are a few small cracks in the fascia, but these are easy items to replace should you wish. The instruments work as they should, with the odometer reading ~74,418 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has been replaced with a smaller diameter item, which has some signs of use. The gearknob and Hi-Lo knob are in good condition with a small amount of wear.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

There isn’t a lot which has not been renovated on this early Defender 110, plus it has a rebuilt 300 TDi engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine was fully rebuilt approximately ten years ago, with detailed photographs of the process. It fired up with the first flick of the key, as can be seen in our "Mechanical Review" video. There is some surface corrosion around the aluminium parts of the engine because it has been standing for some time. A couple of small damp oil patches were spotted, but nothing which was dripping. A large alloy intercooler is fitted with silicon hoses, which helps improve the performance. There are no untoward noises from the engine bay, and everything appears in good order.

The gearbox has been upgraded to the later R380, which has a smooth change. No noises are coming from the transmission, and it pulls strongly through the gears. Off-road the Defender works as you would expect; the Hi-Lo range works as it should, as demonstrated in the "On The Road" video.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension was all replaced at the time of the restoration and still sits nice and level. There is a small amount of surface corrosion on the suspension components, but nothing excessive. It handles rough roads and off-road with ease, and no knocks or bangs are coming from any corner of the Defender.

Bringing the Defender to a stop, the brakes work as you would expect, there is no juddering through the pedal, and it comes to a halt in a straight line.

The Drive

Out on the road, the Defender is great fun to drive, it gets even better off-road where it’s most at home. The powerful 300TDi engine performs well, and it's a very usable Land Rover capable of tackling whatever you ask, on or off-road.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the Defender is reported to be working as it should. There are some cosmetic signs of wear to the switchgear. There is a Sony Stereo mounted in the roof, which is connected to front and rear roof-mounted speakers. For security, an immobiliser and an X-Defend steering lock are fitted.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Over 200 photographs show the comprehensive restoration the 110 Defender has been through, some smart upgrades and renovated, it comes with a fresh MOT and a keen reserve.

Unfortunately, there is no paperwork showing the receipts for parts purchased over the years and during the restoration. However, there are a substantial number of photographs documenting the various stages, and it's clear to see just how many new parts were fitted, including the all-important galvanised chassis and bulkhead. This is a fantastic Defender for any 4x4 fan, having had all the hard work done, including the complete engine rebuild. It is ready for you to jump in and start your 4x4 journey. Since the passing of Susans brother, the car has been kept at the garage that carried out the restoration and rebuild of the defender.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
