Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

The MYL 007 combines rugged power with smooth performance, ready to tackle any terrain while turning heads wherever it goes.

The Land Rover Defender 90 2.8i MYL 007 is a rare and distinctive take on one of Britain’s most iconic off-road vehicles. Produced in very limited numbers for select markets, this particular model is powered by the revered 2.8L BMW M52 straight-six engine – a smooth, torquey unit more commonly found in performance saloons. The result is a Defender that not only retains its legendary off-road prowess but also offers a level of refinement and on-road performance not typically associated with the breed.

Finished in a rugged, classic Defender aesthetic, the MYL 007 edition combines heritage styling with mechanical upgrades that make it an excellent choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Whether tackling challenging terrain or cruising comfortably on the road, this model strikes a unique balance between utility and driving pleasure. A true rarity, it’s a standout example of how the Defender's timeless design can be enhanced without losing its tough, go-anywhere spirit.

This example comes to market in a really stand out condition, looking over the Defender leaves little concern with the finish or the quality on whats on offer here. Those in the market for something very special or a 4x4 that is unlike many others out there, look no further than this MYL 007.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Jim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As you might be able to tell, I'm a pretty big Land Rover fan!

Jim is a big Land Rover enthusiast and this 90 MYL 007 is one of two special version Defender's he currently owns. Jim tells us more about his 4x4 experience with these cars, "These are something, powerful when you need it, but refined enough to tackle town and city roads.

He says, "Both of these turn heads wherever they go, those in the know about Land Rover always pay these one's a few compliments!"

With a focus on future projects and new cars on the horizon, Jim is looking to sell off both of his BMW built, special edition Land Rover's. Should you have any questions about the car, Jim would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

A perfect blend of strength and style, the Defender's iconic shape, powerful stance, and bold lines demand attention wherever it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

The Land Rover is set on 16" black steel wheels. These are in great condition with very few marks and overall look really smart. The style of the wheel compliments the rugged look of the Land Rover well.

The wheels are fitted with a set of BFGoodrich - Mud Terrain tyres all round. Tread spec shows 265/75 to the front and rear. The condition of tyres looks great overall with no obvious cracking or concerning signs of wear. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Defender and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Defender showed in a beautiful condition. Looking over the exterior, the panel lines looking straight and well-aligned and we found no major dings or marks noted. The toughened build quality shows its prestige as we looked over the car on our visit; all doors, bonnet and boot open and close without concern with the panels gaps all looking to line up well.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Defender is finished in white, which really suits the car offset against the black trim. The finish of the paint appears in great condition around the car and really shows how much care it's received. Each panel presents an even coverage and colour throughout. We only noticed some light marks to the base of the kick plates entering the cabin area, aside from this very minor point, a really stunning model.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in excellent condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The seals look great around the car and in line with the rest of the condition.

We didn't note any issues on the rubber sections on the interior edges with the cabin sections showing very well indeed. Badges and emblems are present and correct. The soft top roof showed with barely a mark noted on it - inside and out.

The seals and light sections to the front and rear look excellent around the exterior and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

With durable premium materials, thoughtful design, and a driver-focused layout, it's built to withstand the toughest adventures while providing comfort on every journey.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car looks just as you would expect for a very well-kept example. The door cards, and soft top lining all look in lovely condition. Both the front and all the rear seating in the car show with a stunning level of presentation. The rest of the interior tells a similar story, clean, smart and well displayed.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats showed to be in great condition, and looking underneath these, the main floor sections showed with barely a mark noted. Checking over the rear section of the cabin and Defender rubber matting, showed with no concerns at all.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in fantastic shape with no issues to report. The tan leather section highlighting the stereo was a great highlight here. Black dials with white needles looked excellent and were all functioning as expected. Being an import model, the speedometer is displayed in kilometres per hour.

The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in great condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights on the drive, and the speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge and tachometer were all functioning without concern when starting up the car and out on the road.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic leather bound Land Rover steering wheel takes pride of place in front of the driver, it showed in great condition, only some minor marks on the centre badge.

The Defender features both a high-range and low-range gearbox as well as a diff-lock, for all the on and off-road needs. The gear knobs and tan gaiters showed very well.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The powerful BMW M52 straight-six engine offers impressive performance across any terrain, delivering ~190BHP to all four wheels.

Engine and Gearbox

Powering the Defender is a high-revving BMW M52 2.8L straight-six, originally found in the E39 528i. Paired with an R380 5-speed manual and full-time 4WD with high and low range, 0–60MPH comes in just ~9.1 seconds.

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns and the Land Rover performed without issue when running and out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all. The gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the Defender through to the gears.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Jim reports a great drive in the Defender and mentions it's always been given the attention it deserves. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The Defender sits with a high stance giving plenty of ground clearance for off-roading. We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no concerns, again showing well here. Springs and shock absorbers also looked in great condition all round.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported through the pedal, the stopping power and control felt great.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The drive in the Land Rover Defender MYL 007 is an experience like no other. With its rugged build and off-road capabilities, it handles any terrain with ease, offering a smooth yet commanding ride.

Whether navigating city streets or tackling challenging landscapes, the Defender’s power, precision, and comfort make every journey enjoyable. It’s not just a vehicle - it’s a trusted companion that offers confidence and adventure wherever you go.

Electrics and Other

The Defender is complete with an Alpine stereo, Pioneer speakers, dash USB input and a spare wheel located on the rear door. During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in excellent condition.

We tested the factory fitted air con system out on our drive in the car which all operated without concern. Jim let us know that everything was in working order, as far as he was aware.

History and Paperwork

With only 1,395 units produced (656 D90's and 739 D110's) - this Defender is an exceptionally rare example, particularly in such outstanding condition.

Exclusively built for the South African market, the Defender 2.8i was powered by the BMW M52 six-cylinder petrol engine - making it a standout in Land Rover history.

Developed following BMW’s takeover of Land Rover, the 2.8i offered significantly improved performance, capable of revving to 6,000rpm and bringing a new level of refinement and power to the Defender lineup.

With production ending in 2016, these unique models are now highly sought after by enthusiasts.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
