Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

One of the most iconic and practical cars to be produced in Britain and used across every corner of the world - It's our off-road vehicle of choice, the Land Rover Defender.

The Defender began its life as the British equivalent of the Second World War derived (Willys) Jeep, and quickly gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility.

The original car used a steel ladder chassis and aluminium alloy bodywork and was still being produced in developing countries despite the arrival of the relaunched Defender (L663.) The Defender incorporated significant changes compared to its predecessor, such as adopting coil springs, lockable center diffs along with a more modern interior.

This example is fitted with Land Rover's last in-house diesel, the five-cylinder Td5 which offers serious torque at low revs - ideal for plowing through waist-high mud! Coming to market from 12 years ownership from a very caring owner, it's had a full service and additional maintenance to a cost of ~£7,000 in June this year.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Riad the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always liked the iconic Defender, after driving a 110, I decided the 90 was perfect for me and my needs.

Riad has owned the Defender for the past 12 years and really enjoyed his ownership over that time. He's has really given this 4x4 the attention it deserves over his ownership, and has a very healthy stack of receipts totalling some ~£24,000 which can be viewed in the history and paperwork gallery.

With some lifestyle changes over the past 2 years, the Defender isn't getting the use as before, and so Riad is putting the car up for sale with us. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

The charming, boxy aluminium shell, it hasn't always been in fashion but always respected none the less, the heritgate of these 4x4s is plain to see.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 16" 5-spoke star alloys which are wrapped in large General Grabber TR tyres, you'll be able to plow across any terrain.

The wheels are finished in a metallic grey and appear in great condition on each corner of this 4x4, with some very slight wear to the centre caps. The tyres appear in great condition with lots of tread for the new custodian to drive away on. The tyres are dated 2012 all around.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in line with the age and mileage of the car, very nice condition throughout. The panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking good, especially for a Defender!

The underside of the car looks good and free from any major corrosion, which can be seen in the mechanical photos. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The Defender is finished in a dark green, which really suits the car, the finish of the paint appears in great condition around the car and really shows how much attention it's received. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout. We only noticed some very light scratches in line with the age and mileage.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off the wonderful Defender at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading. A black bull grille has also been fitted along with new side steps this summer.

Interior

A simple and utilitarian cabin space, with extra room for passengers on the rear benches.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car looks just as you would expect for a well-kept example. The seats, door cards, and headlining look great. The only point to note really is that the inner side of the drivers seat foam has lost its shape/moved slightly. This along with a very small tear on the outside bolster are items that you'd think should be an easy fix to remedy.

Riad has recently had soundproofing installed within the cabin, along with addressing the headlining and a rear reversing camera connected to the rear view mirror. The rest of the interior tells a similar story, clean and smart. Take a look at the interior video in high resolution for a detailed tour.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition, showing some wear in line with the age and mileage of the vehicle - a testament to the car being looked after over the years.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic original Land Rover steering wheel is fitted along with its gearstick, range selector, and hand break - all items appear in great condition in line with the rest of the car.

View the media pack to see the details.

Mechanics

Direct injection Turbo - an award-wining off-road champion, the Land Rover Defender dominates on any terrain.

Engine and Gearbox

The Td5 was Land Rovers last in-house diesel. It proved a great success after buyers' initial fears of electronic engine control subsided. The engine produced 122BHP, but its real power was serious torque at low revs - ideal for ploughing through the green lanes.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

In 1983, the switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key part of the success. It offered improved off-road ability, load capacity, handling, and importantly ride comfort.

Riad reports suspension and brakes work very well, the car having new rear shock absorbers and bushes fitted in the summer. The brakes also serviced as part of the work over summer.

The Drive

The ideal all rounder, the Defender is an extremely practical utility vehicle, used by the military and police worldwide. It offers a unique experience, one that'll make you smile wherever you decide to venture.

Electrics and Other

Riad reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge. The car has central locking, and Riad reports fitting a reversing camera which is built into the rear view mirror.

An uprated stereo head unit is fitted, and the Defender is also sold with the original Land Rover unit as pictured in the paperwork gallery.

History and Paperwork

A solid example, coming from 12 years ownership and having just had a major service and maintenance this summer at ~£7,000, it's good to go.

The car comes with a great amount of paperwork in the form of MOT certificates, service stamps, and receipts. Take a look at the media pack to see the ~£24,000 worth of receipts over Riad's ownership.

The car is also sold with it's weatherproof cover and Riad will be more than happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below. Please note, the personalised registration show on some of the documents will not be sold with the car, it has been returned to the original registration of W877LAA.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Riad. Was it converted to a station wagon during your ownership or before and does it leak any oil now?

From the VIN it indicates a hardtop van, but wanted to double check. Thanks

Hi Riad. Some TD5 engines prefix 10P were subject to cylinder head cracking around the injector ports. Do you know if this vehicle was affected and if a new cylinder head has been fitted? Thanks!

Have any parts been resprayed or is all the paint original? Have there been any more issues after the new ECU? Thanks.

Thank you. So it’s had a replacement rear door but all other panels are original and the rest of the paint is original (except the crossmember and rear door)? On the photos of the service documents, photo 63 says that at approx 66,000 miles there is mention of ECU related issue / investigation, can you give any more detail on this please? Thanks.

I know you have a recent MOT but the spring supports look very corroded. Do you think they will need replacing soon with a new spring kit? Thanks
