Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The Defender 90 Station Wagon embodies pure purpose—a true off-roader with ample cabin space.

The Land Rover Defender 90 XS Station Wagon SWB is a four-seater "go-anywhere" icon. With its rugged body lines and a 2.4L inline-four turbo-diesel engine with permanent 4x4 drive, no obstacle will be a challenge. It's the versatility of these Defenders that has endeared to country folk, farmers, vets, the military, and those who want a timeless-looking purpose built utility vehicle.

This Land Rover features the 2.4L Ford Duratorq (Puma) turbodiesel engine, six-speed manual gearbox and the ‘XS’ Spec upgrades which offers half-leather seats, heated front seats, electric windows, a fancier dashboard, 18” black alloy wheels, modified front grille, black chequer plating, side and rear steps plus towbar with electrics. This example has been in the careful hands of the current custodian for ~10 months, the car has been well serviced and kept over the previous years which is reflective in the condition you can view it in today. It comes with a fresh MOT valid until 17.04.2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Jeremy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This Defender is truly something special. With the XS specification, large off-road tyres, and short wheelbase (SWB), it is ideal for Cornish roads and holidays.

Jeremy has owned Land Rovers before, but he says nothing compares to this one. He loves the XS spec, the body condition, and the flexibility of being able to take it anywhere. He mentions that he has never driven it off-road, and with a great service history dating back to new, this Land Rover Defender 90 has been truly cherished since 2007.

Jeremy found the car for sale just a few roads away from his home ~10 months ago. On the same day, he took it home and has enjoyed driving it around Cornwall. However, due to a lack of use and ill health in the family, he has decided to part ways with his beloved 90 XS SW and bring it to auction with us. Jeremy will be available in the comments to answer any of your questions.

Exterior

A charming, boxy aluminium shell that remains remarkably true to the original.

Wheels and Tyres

The gloss black 18" 'Sawtooth' wheels look great on this example, giving the car a sporty appeal. During our visit, the wheels appeared well cared for, with no obvious damage to any of the spokes.

The wheels are fitted with large BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tyres, which are also in great condition. Dated 2016, they have a good amount of tread remaining with no visible cracking or signs of ageing on the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Station Wagon is in great condition, with all panel gaps appearing to align well for a Defender. During our visit, we did not spot any obvious dings or dents.

Upon closer inspection, we noticed some minor corrosion near the rear swinging door, particularly along its bottom edge, as well as the odd minor scratch. However, for a utility vehicle, it has been very well maintained.

We have provided more detailed observations in our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a comprehensive look at the vehicle's condition.

Paint

Finished in Stornoway Grey (paint code 907), the paintwork is evenly applied across all panels. Paired with gloss black trim, the car presents beautifully, reflecting the care it has received over the years.

Once again, we have captured high-resolution images and videos for you to assess the bodywork’s condition in detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Defender 90 XS is in good condition and consistent with the mileage. During our visit, we noticed a small chip on the passenger side, currently sealed with a chip sticker to prevent dirt and moisture from worsening it. The window seals also appear to be in good condition, aligning with the overall well-kept nature of the car.

The bumpers, door handles and window surrounds are all in good condition. Jeremy only drives the car in dry weather and keeps it garaged when not in use.

Interior

A simple yet highly practical cabin space that has aged gracefully over the years.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car looks just as you would expect for a well-cared-for modern classic.

The seats, door cards, and headlining are in excellent condition, with only slight creasing beginning to appear on the driver’s half-leather heated seat.

The carpeted interior is similarly well-kept—clean and plush throughout.

Dashboard

The dashboard remains in its original condition, showing minimal wear in line with the car’s age and mileage.

The car retains its original Land Rover radio system, which Jeremy confirms is fully functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A custom sporty steering wheel has been fitted and is in great condition. The gearstick and range selector also present well, matching the overall high standard of the interior.

Please take a look at the detailed photos and videos for a closer view of the cabin.

Mechanics

Ready to tackle any terrain, the Defender remains a true off-road champion in its class.

Engine and Gearbox

The TD5 engine served well, but it could not comply with evolving European emission regulations. Land Rover subsequently opted for the Ford Duratorq four-cylinder diesel. The 2402cc TDCi provided the best-ever throttle response and torque across the rev range. Thanks to advancements in technology, it was also the quietest Defender engine to date, offering a relatively smooth ride.

The anti-stall feature was further refined, allowing the Defender to crawl over almost any terrain, forwards or backwards, without any accelerator input from the driver.

On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed excellently on the road. The engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran faultlessly, with its smooth six-speed manual gearbox delivering power to all four wheels.

Suspension and Brakes

Jeremy confirms that the suspension and brakes work well, describing a comfortable ride with strong, on-demand stopping power.

Jeremy reports when starting the car for the first time an amber 'ABS' light shows, however after a few meters of driving this light turns off.

In 1983, the switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key factor in the success of the 110 model. It significantly improved off-road capability, load capacity, handling, and ride comfort.

The Drive

This Defender 90 offers an extremely fun and adventurous driving experience. Jeremy has enjoyed using the car for local road trips around Cornwall on sunny weekends.

The 90 started on the first attempt, with no issues reported. On the road with Jeremy, the car felt solid and provided ample power for navigating country roads. We did not notice any unusual noises from the engine or suspension.

Electrics and Other

While we did not test all the electrics during our visit, Jeremy assures us that, to his knowledge, all electrical components are fully operational. The car retains its original stereo unit and features factory-fitted air conditioning.

History and Paperwork

A highly desirable 90 XS Station Wagon, finished in Stornoway Grey over Black and ready for its next adventure.

Jeremy has owned the car for approximately 10 months. It remains highly original and, with the sought-after XS specification, boasts numerous premium features that set it apart from the crowd.

This Defender 90 XS comes with:

Half-leather seating, Electric windows, Upgraded dashboard, Air conditioning, Heated seats, Side steps, Gloss black Sawtooth alloy wheels ,Rear-mounted spare wheel, Towbar with electrics, Headlight surrounds, Modified front grille, Chequer plating on the bonnet, Privacy glass, Factory-finished paint Stornoway Grey (907)

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
