Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The Defender 110 Station Wagon is the purity of purpose, a proper off-roader with bags of cabin space.

The Land Rover Defender 110 XS Station Wagon LWB is a seven-seater "go-anywhere" icon. Rugged body lines and a 2.4L inline-four turbo-diesel engine with permanent 4x4 drive, no obstacle will be a challenge. It's the versatility of these Defenders that has endeared to country folk, farmers, vets, the military, and those who want a timeless-looking seven-seater.

We really like this example, owned by a Land Rover enthusiast, finished in an attractive colour with some nice external touches like the wheels and trim, coming with relatively low mileage for a workhorse like this. Freshly prepared for sale, the car will have 12 months MOT for the new owner too.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As you might be able to tell, I'm a pretty big Land Rover fan!

John is a real big Land Rover enthusiast and this 110 XS is just one of many he currently owns. His real passion lies with the older Series 1-3 Land Rovers, and so he is changing up his collection to focus on those cars, by selling a couple of his Defenders. He's covered some ~1,000 miles with this car locally in the midlands.

John is very aware of how desirable Land Rovers have become recently and has kept the Land Rover original while fitting various security features to ensure the bonnet, and doors can't be pinched with ease. He'll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

A charming boxy aluminium shell that's remarkably similar to the 1948 original.

Wheels and Tyres

The car rides on 16" Sawtooth alloys, finished in gloss black, which look in excellent condition all around, including the full-size spare on the rear wheel.

The alloys are wrapped in Cooper Discoverer STT Pro rubber, which has an excellent amount of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in line with the age and mileage of the car, and in excellent condition throughout. The panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking good, especially for a Defender.

When getting really close to the bodywork, we notice a few light scuffs around the sills, and on the roof. We noticed the smallest area of corrosion along the alpine windows, but hardly any in the usual corrosion hotspots.

The headlight protectors have been removed, and a soft front nudge bar fitted. A gloss black KBX grille, with gloss black wind mirrors and bonnet vents, has also been fitted.

The underside of the car looks good and free from any usual corrosion, which can be seen in the mechanical photos.

Paint

The Defender is finished in a dark green, which appears in excellent condition around the car, and really shows how cared for this car has been. Each panel presents a deep and excellent lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout.

We noticed the rear cross member and sidesteps had been finished in a black satin texturised paint. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the paint.

Glass and Trim

The car has also been upgraded with a full set of LED lights [Update - These have been replaced, as the LED lights no longer comply with MOT regulations], tinted rear windows, and a Mantek snorkel.

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

Interior

A remarkably simple and very usable cabin space which has aged gracefully.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car looks just as you would expect for a cherished modern classic.

The seats, door cards, and headlining look excellent, with some slight signs of creasing only starting to appear on the driver's half-leather heated seat. The driver's seat bolsters inner has collapsed and would really benefit from the foam being replaced.

The carpeted interior tells a similar story, clean and plush within the cabin. The car doors have been fitted with finger traps for added security.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition and shows very little wear in line with the age and mileage of the vehicle.

The car is fitted with its original Land Rover radio system, which John reports everything is working on the dash, apart from the aircon.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Land Rover steering wheel is fitted and looks in excellent condition inside this off-road monster. The gearstick and range selector also look in great condition and in line with the rest of the car.

Please take a look at the detailed photos and videos for a closer look within the cabin.

Mechanics

An award-winning off-road champion, the Defender 110 dominates in any off-piste terrain.

Engine and Gearbox

The TD5 gave good service, but couldn't comply with European emission regulations, so for Land Rover, they opted for the Ford Duratorq four-cylinder diesel. The 2402cc TDCi achieved the best-ever rates of throttle response and torque through the rev range. It was also the quietest engine, thanks to developments in technology, and offered drivers a pretty smooth ride.

The anti-stall feature was also further improved, allowing the Defender to crawl over almost any terrain, forwards or backward without any accelerator input from the driver.

John reports a great drive in the Defender and mentions it's always been given the attention it deserves via regular servicing and MOTs.

This car is well and truly ready to take on any adventure. Please take a look at the history and paperwork to see the work carried out.

Suspension and Brakes

John reports suspension and brakes work faultlessly, mentioning a comfortable ride with stopping on-demand performance.

In 1983 the switch from leaf spring to coil spring suspension was a key part of the 110's success. It offered improved off-road ability, load capacity, handling, and ride comfort.

The Drive

John reports driving a Defender a unique experience, one that'll make you smile whenever you decided to venture.

Electrics and Other

We're assured that everything on the car works as expected, with the exception of the air conditioning.

The car is equipped with heated front seats, it's original Land Rover radio, and many other nifty features that all have a purpose. Please note, the LED headlights have been swapped out as they are no longer compliant with MOT regulations.

History and Paperwork

A lovely example of a 110 XS Station Wagon, finished in a dark green with some choice personalisation.

The car comes with lots of service history, MOT certificates, and receipts. The car has had a fresh MOT actioned so that the new owner has 12 months covered. Throughout John's ownership, he's fitted tasteful modifications that pair nicely with the deep green paint. Such as the gloss black wing mirrors, bonnet vents, KBX grille, and soft nudge bar - not to forget the snorkel, allowing the car to wade through 900m of water.

John has also fitted many subtle security features for peace of mind, yet has really kept the originality of this desirable off-roader.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi John, could you confirm that the VINs on the Brake pedal box (plate beneath bonnet), Windscreen and the Chassis all match? And match that on the V5c document? Ideally, pictures would be great. Kind Regards, George
