Introduction
Paul Wright
The ultimate two-seater driving machine - pretty much as close as you could get to a race car for the road!
The Lotus 7 is a small, simple, lightweight two-seater open-top sports car produced by Lotus between 1957 to 1972. Designed by Colin Chapman, the Seven was considered the embodiment of the Lotus philosophy of performance through low weight and simplicity. In the early '60s, there was a heavy British tax on automobiles; one of the ways to get around this was to essentially sell your car as a kit. However, if you supplied assembly instructions, they would still levy that tax upon you, so Lotus actually provided disassembly instructions that people would follow in reverse. After Lotus ended production of the 7 in 1972, Caterham bought the rights and today still produces the kits and fully assembled cars based on the original.
This lovely example has been part of Jeff’s life for over 50 years. There's not much he doesn’t know about the car, having rebuilt it twice in that time. A superb Lotus Seven, which has clearly been very cherished with the most recent restoration in 2018 and little miles since. This particular car has lots going for it, and should be considered a proper drivers car for someone who wants to put it through its paces. Features like the uprated Vegantune "blueprinted" engine, a race clutch, suspension refresh in 2018, a new chassis in 1984, it presents in beautiful condition and has the performance to match too.

Another quick question – does the heater work?
Hi again Gary,
Thank you for your question and interest, It’s some time since I tried the heater in extremis.
What I can say, is the fan motor works and pushes a fair amount of air through the vents. The hot water must circulate through the heater, there is no means of diverting the hot water. Be aware that there are NO vents to direct the hot air onto the windscreen, just the feet of the driver and passenger.
Hi Gary, Regarding your last comment, I regret the website wo’nt allow me to access your comment directly. But Yes if you sort the insurance and no strings attached to me, Then the 15th July works for me. I would be delighted to meet the new owner face to face and tell them all about by car.
Hi Jeff, if I was the highest bidder, would you be OK to store the car for a few weeks while I arrange pick up? Obviously I’d pay for the car in full
Hi Gary,
Well this is a tough one regarding the legality and insurance issues. Technically you will be the new owner and my insurance I don’t believe would be valid should the worst happen? I could talk to my insurance company and see what they say? Or, you talk to your insurance company and see what they say? Insurance issue apart, YES I am fortunate to have the space and I could easily store it exactly where it is now. If you don’t collect the car by the 8th June, I won’t be in a position to be able to pass the vehicle to a carrier until 3rd July?
thanks Jeff. I could possibly pick up myself afterthe 15 July. That might work. I’d insure myself so no worries on that front
Hi Jeff… I understand that it is the case that the fabric roof is missing but the roof irons are present. Is there a cover for the rear deck? I can see the press studs are there.
Regards Jim
Hi Jim, Thank you for your interest and question.
I am 6ft 2 in and rarely used the fabric roof. Unfortunately, I believe I threw it out in error in a loft clear out. There is no cover for just the rear deck. There is however a full tonneau cover, that covers the cockpit and the rear deck. There is a central zip over the cockpit area that allows access to the driver, but protects the rear deck and the passenger seat in bad weather. If you look at the photos of the parts that are included you will see it in the foreground. This cover is in excellent condition and is extremely useful when the car is caught out in wet conditions.
Hi again Jim, I neglected to say that the heavy protective cover that is shown in the garage sequence of photos, is also included.
Hi Jeff… lovely car . Does it run on unleaded. Regards.. Jim
HiJimandPaula, thank you for your interest and compliment. It is indeed a lovely car. I do not know if Vegantune fitted hardened exhaust valve seats back in 1984. I think it was about the year 2000 when leaded petrol was banned. At first I added a chemical at every fill up and the car ran perfectly. For the last 5 years or so with the onset of bio fuels I have used Shell V Power and once again the car has run without any issues.
Hi Jeff, Do you have the original Lotus chassis plate with the SB chassis number or was the original car writen off? Thanks Barry
Hi Barry, thank you for interest and comment. You are correct, the original car was stolen and severely damaged and was an insurance write off.
