Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

The Lotus Carlton could outrun many Italian supercars of the era at a fraction of the cost when new.

Those with long memories might recall the fuss the Lotus Carlton ruffled up in the press. The 180+ MPH Lotus caused such causation, that the media called Vauxhall irresponsible and claimed the car was anti-social; thus creating a marketing dream for free! Conceived as an Opel, just 282 RHD cars left the production line in Russelhiem then shipped to Hethel. They were then disassembled, subject to extensive chassis and engine work and given an official Lotus type number of 104.

Trade Classics has possibly one of the best examples available on the market for sale. It is completely original down to the original tyres and almost unmarked interior, with two previous owners. Car number 0882 has been gently used in recent years, living a semi-retired life in near-perfect storage conditions. As a result, it has only recorded ~20,800 miles on the clock, which correlates to the incredible condition, including the original painted torque marks guides on the engine components. Make no mistake, this is one of the most original Lotus Carltons available.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Colin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is a car that I feel I might end up regret selling... it's going to be hard to ever find one like it again.

You couldn't wish for better former keepers. This car has been positively spoilt. Colin lives the dream and has amassed a sizeable collection of iconic cars over the years.

As a result, he likes to refresh his collection with new acquisitions every so often. Having owned this car and appreciated its unique ability and reputation, he feels its time for someone else to enjoy this modern legend.

Exterior

The impact of its imposing presence and fearful reputation is still there. But this is no dinosaur!

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels and tyres are in excellent condition, the Goodyear tyres are actually the original items that were fitted on the car when new. Normally this might be a concern but the appropriate storage environment and temperature means that there is no sign of age deterioration.

Bodywork

For a car that has seen a privileged life, with no signs of repair work, it would be right to imply this car is perfect. The panels are straight with absolutely no dents or scrapes. The panel gaps are all true and equal. Accident damage and rust are unfortunately well known in these cars, so there is a huge piece of mind knowing that the car is free from both.

Paint

This example is finished in Imperial Green, the only colour that the Lotus Carlton came in. As expected for a car that has been carefully stored it is immaculate with just a couple of chips to the bonnet and lower near-side front splitter.

Glass and Trim

The glass and rubber trim is in exceptional condition. No haze, scratches or damage is evident. The Lotus Carlton came with several bespoke items, which are becoming increasingly hard to find but share many parts with the more humble Carlton.

The car has its chassis plate number etched on each glass panel, take a look through the extensive photographs detailing condition.

Interior

The interior retains its original allure, combining the germanic build quality with the class of Connolly leather.

Seats and Carpets

The Anthracite Connolly Leather seats almost look like they have just left factory. No sagging or major wear, if you wanted to be really picky, just the drivers side showing some gentle signs of age in the leather.

The carpets, including the boot, door cards and parcel shelf items are in excellent and damp-free condition.

Dashboard

As to be expected, the dashboard condition along with the functions of the instruments are said to be as new. The car comes with an original tape deck as well as a multi-disc CD player. There are no signs of sun damage and the button and controls retain their precision touch and function.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Showing very little signs of use and wear, both the steering wheel and gearstick are in as new condition. The condition of the leather and wood embellishment are unmarked.

Mechanics

The widely reported top speed of over 180 MPH is overshadowed by the cars 4.8 sec 0-60 time. In a 4 door saloon. An astonishing feat for the time.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine presentation is immaculate, and as expected completely original with no aftermarket additions and electronic "chipping" that some Lotus Carltons have been subjected to. There is no doubt that this car feels as good as the day it was bought.

Suspension and Brakes

There is no wear on the inside edges of the tyres which is a good sign, as this suggests the self-levelling system is fully functional.

Colin has taken the car for a stretch of its legs now and again and reports that it drives like a dream.

The Drive

The car on its instant start-up gives little away to its potential. There are no unwanted noises coming from the engine and no leaks. Watch the video to see it in action on the cold start, and some gentle revving when it has settled down on idle.

Electrics and Other

All the electrics, including the multi-function check control warning panel function correctly.

All items are original to the car and are in excellent condition, including the headlamps and rear lights.

History and Paperwork

Coming with full provenance, and a host of limited edition accessories from Lotus, we think this is definitely a car for the discerning collector.

The previous owner had kept a vehicle repair journal, which covers the periods from 1996 to 2005, in which the car covered just 15,000 miles. More recently the injectors were replaced (originals coming with the car too) following a series of maintenance with brake and sensor renewals.

The car was also subjected to an underside waxing treatment as well as full service history stamps. The car has covered so little mileage in the last couple of decades, and just 64 miles in the last two years.

This car also comes with a limited print run book of the car that was given to the original owners, and a boxed presentation exhaust valve from the engine. A nice touch that adds an element of exclusivity to the car. You'll also see the original leather holders for service book and manuals, and 2 sets of keys, everything you'd want to preserve provenance.
