Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Light, sharp, and iconic - the Elise S is built for pure driving fun.

The Lotus Elise is a legendary mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive roadster, first unveiled in 1994 and launched in 1996. Its lightweight fibre-glass body is bonded to an Aluminium chassis, offering exceptional rigidity and sharp handling while keeping weight and costs low. This core design has remained largely unchanged throughout its 25-year production run—proof of its brilliance.

This 2 former keeper, low mileage car, comes to market from ~1.5 years ownership, and is well equipped to tackle all weather conditions courtesy of the removable soft top. In its previous ownership, the car was maintained and serviced by a Lotus engineer, carrying out all the necessary works required over the years. The car carries itself very well and features a stage 2 exhaust system, comfortable and supportive ProBax seating and 2 new front tyres.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Tim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's agile, full of character and we've made many great memories out on the open road!

Tim has thoroughly enjoyed owning the Lotus, he tells us more about his experience with the S, "Its such a pure and engaging drive every time I get behind the wheel". He goes on to say, "For me, there are so many positive aspects of the car. Lightweight, sharp handling, and the responsive engine capture the essence of what a true driver’s car should be".

The Elise has always delivered smiles and unforgettable moments for Tim, although with less time on his hands now to truly enjoy the car, Tim feels its the right time to let a new owner to take charge, "I'll be sad to see it go, but the time is right. I know the next keeper will absolutely love it!". Should you have any questions about the car, Tim would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

Sleek, low-slung, and unmistakably Lotus - the Elise S turns heads with its sculpted lines and race-inspired stance.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 6-spoke alloy wheels. All appeared to be in good condition and we didn’t notice any major damage, just the occasional age-related marks here and there. The car is setup with a staggered drive approach, with 16" wheels at the front and 17" at the rear.

The front of the Elise is fitted with Toyo Proxes CF2 tyres with date codes from 2024. To the rear the car was fitted with Yokohama Neova. Tyres show a spec of 185/50 to the front and 225/45 to the back. All tyres appeared to be in good visual condition with plenty of tread shown. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Lotus and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Lotus showed very well. The panel gaps look straight and well-aligned visually. Original build quality still shows nicely as we looked over the car on our visit; both doors and boot open and close without concern with the panels gaps all looking to line up well.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the popular colour choice of "Magnetic Blue Metallic", the coverage is even across the car with no noted imperfections to colour. With a little polish we feel the car could be elevated an extra level.

We didn't note any real concerns with the paint, there were a couple of slight marks, one by the driver side headlight where a touch up spot was noted and a small stone chip to the front panel, but nothing major here. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, rear and side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in excellent condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The seals look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition. We didn't note any issues on the seals either. There were some slight markings to the inner door sill edges from entrance and exit to the low position seating.

Badges and emblems are present and correct, along with the front headlamps and rear LED lights. The roof hood, able to be stored in the rear section, was showing in great condition.

Interior

Minimalist and driver-focused, the interior is all about the essentials - no frills, just pure connection to the road.

Seats and Carpets

The seats showed really well and looked excellent finished in grey. The seats are the ProBax system, designed with a series of foam inserts, built directly into the seat base. The setup uses a specific geometric design and precise placement within the existing cushion, the results being improved posture and comfort.

It was clear, looking over the interior, that the Elise has been well looked after during its ownership, although would benefit slightly from a valet to clean the cabin up slightly. The minimalist carpets show in good condition. The boot showed in respectable condition although a clean over would improve the presentation. Underneath the cabin carpets on the main flooring showed no concerning issues.

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in fantastic shape with no issues to report and the grey Alcantara finishes off the quality of the interior very well. White dials with orange needles looked excellent and were all functioning as expected. The digital odometer showed with ~19,118 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in lovely condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching. We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer and rev counter were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black 3-spoke steering wheel shows well with the Alcantara finishing to the centre, overall no concerns were noted here. The setup is straight forward, designed to focus the driver on the task ahead.

The manual gear stick with polished gear knob also looks to be in great condition.

Mechanics

At its heart is a punchy 1.8L engine, delivering lively performance, tuned for driver engagement.

Engine and Gearbox

A naturally aspirated Toyota, inline-four engine sits behind the driver, delivering ~134BHP that perfectly complements the Elise’s "featherweight" chassis in classic Lotus fashion - minimalist, balanced, and built for the road.

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns and the Lotus performed without issue when running and out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all. The manual gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the Elise through to the gears.

We took the car out around some local roads with Tim to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no concerns, again showing well here.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported through the pedal, the stopping power and control felt great. Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The Lotus Elise S delivers a raw and engaging driving experience that’s hard to match. Its lightweight chassis, sharp steering, and mid-engine layout create superb balance and handling, making every corner a thrill.

Paired with a lively 1.8L engine, the Elise feels agile and responsive, offering a true connection between driver and road. It’s a pure sports car that rewards spirited driving while still being approachable and fun at any speed.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the Elise we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in excellent condition. The Elise is complete with an upgraded stage 2 exhaust system, toolkit and a roof, which is able to be stored in the rear section when not in use.

The car also comes with a factory fitted Alpine stereo. We tested the stereo out on our drive in the car which operated without concern. Tim told us everything was in working order, as far as he was aware.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~1.5 year ownership with just 2 former keepers, this Lotus presents in beautiful condition and should be considered a low mileage example having covered under ~20,000 miles.

Very little has had to be completed on the Lotus in Tim's current ownership, only needing to purchase 2 new tyres and a battery. The car has been retro fitted with a stage 2 exhaust in 2008 adding to the sporty nature of the car and sounding great out on the road.

We cover the previous servicing history of the Elise in the paperwork history gallery with the previous service works carried out by the former owner who was a Lotus engineer.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Tim. Can I just ask whether there is any plan for a service or new MOT before auction ends? And I’m just down the road from Brighton but assume I would have to collect the car from Lemington? Many thanks Mark

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
