Introduction

Josh Sharples
Professional Consigner

At the Salone d’Automobile de Genéve in March 1969, the fabulous Maserati Indy was launched to commemorate Maserati’s victories in the 500 mile race at Indianapolis.

Thanks to Alfredo Vignale's clever design, with its sleek looks and Italian flair, everyone welcomed the four-seater GT Maserati with open arms. From front to rear, the car flows well. With the tucked away pop up headlights, the air glides over the body with no interruptions. Looking from the side profile of the Indy, it looked like it could go fast standing still. Maserati ensured the car could go as fast as it looked by fitting the 4.2 litre V8 to match the looks. Fuelled by four, yes four, twin-choke 42 DCNF Weber carburettors giving the Indy a claimed 260bhp to play with and capable of reaching a top speed of 155mph. Just 1,104 4.2 litre Indy’s were produced, making this quite a special car in its own right.

This is your chance to have the enormous pleasure of owning one of the 1,104 rare Italian classics produced, one which its current owner has well maintained for the past 30 years.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having a passion for Italian sports cars, I fell in love with the Indy as soon as I saw it for sale 30 years ago.

Peter is the owner of this beautiful and rare 1970 Italian sports car, the stunning Maserati Indy. He purchased the car some 30 years ago after spotting it for sale. It was love at first sight and has stayed that way ever since.

The car is left-hand drive but was imported from South Africa by the one previous UK keeper. Coming from South Africa meant the car was solid due to the dry climate, with just a few age related cosmetic issues in keeping with the age. Shortly after getting the car, Peter sent it for a full bare metal respray, which has stood the test of time and still looks fantastic.

All good things must come to an end, and Peter feels it is time to part with the Italian classic. Although it's been a hard decision, it is time to let someone else have the pleasure of owning this well maintained Maserati Indy.

Please feel free to ask Peter any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Designed by Alfredo Vignale - the Indy was another exquisite design from the Italian coachbuilder.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14” wheels look to be in good condition with no apparent signs of corrosion. The centre caps are in place on all four wheels and in good condition.

The tyres are all matching period looking Blockley 205VR14, with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Indy looks to be in really good condition, with no dings or dents to point out. The doors have a nice equal gap around them, as well as the boot lid and bonnet. The ultra cool '70s pop-up lights are working as they should. They have rubbed just a touch on the bottom edge but may be able to be adjusted to prevent this.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

Benefitting from a full bare metal respray not long after Peter got the car, the colour was changed from a dull blue to the more appealing Silver Metallic, enhancing the beautiful lines of the Maserati Indy.

The paintwork carried out nearly 30 years ago is a true sign of just how good a job was done on the car, as it still looks in excellent condition for how long it has been painted. A few minor corrosion signs are starting on the inner lips of the wheel arches, and there are some stone chips as you would expect, as Peter has not been scared of using the Maserati, often seen touring off into Europe.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this 1970 Maserati Indy, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The Maserati windows look in good condition with just some light age-related marks, as you would expect to find. The seals in the front and rear screens have started to shrink slightly but look complete with no splits. The side windows are in good condition with the trim in place and in good order.

Looking around the car, the brightwork is in good condition for the age of the vehicle. There is some slight tarnishing but nothing too excessive. The headlights are in good order with no cracks. The rear lights do have a small split on the reversing section, but nothing which would cause any issues.

Please see our detailed gallery showing the whole exterior.

Interior

Inside will take you straight back to 1970 - soft, comfy leather and a dashboard full of instruments - perfectta!

Seats and Carpets

Being 52 years old, the seats do have some patina. However, there are no apparent signs of damage to the front or rear seats; they’re just nicely worn in for you. Likewise, the door cards are in good order with no issues to point out.

The carpets have some light wear in the passenger compartment in keeping with the age of the vehicle. There is also a set of rubber mats fitted. The boot area is clean and tidy, with the spare wheel jack and wheel brace present.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

Again at 52 years old, there are some odd signs of age around the switches, but nothing which looks out of place in this '70s classic. The array of instruments are reported to be working as they should, and the odometer is showing ~51,334, which is really ~151,334 kilometres or ~94,034 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a wooden rim 3-spoke steering wheel and matching gear knob, these present well with just minor signs of wear to both, and the Maserati centre badge is in good condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Quad carb V8, 4.2 litre - like a symphony starting to play when you start this 260bhp classic.

Engine and Gearbox

Peter has maintained the Maserati well, as you can see from the paperwork. The car fires up as it should with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay.

Looking around the bay, it seems to be in good order with no signs of any leaks that we could see.

The car drives and changes gear as it should - a firm, precise change sees the car pull strongly through all of the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

Peter reports the car drives and stops as it should and has no quirks, as often found on cars of this age. It handles as it should and is an absolute pleasure to drive in the twisty bits feeling like a proper '70s sports car should.

The Drive

It’s a 4.2 litre V8 Italian classic from 1970. So what is not to love about driving this car? The car goes well, as can be seen in our On the Road Video, and it sounds fantastic and not to mention looks amazing too.

A real head turner which will possibly be leaving most people wondering just what make and model it is if they can't see the badge.

Electrics and Other

Inside the Indy, there has been an aftermarket JVC CD stereo fitted and some upgraded speakers. The switch gear is working as it should and also the electric windows which have been additionally fitted. There is some wear to the switch gear's aesthetics, but Peter informs us that they are working as they should.

History and Paperwork

One previous UK owner and then owned by Peter for 30 years - it's a lot of Italian classic for the money.

There are a number of substantial invoices with the Indy that show clearly that it has been well maintained, regardless of cost, by Maserati specialists. For example, in 2020, the vehicle acquired an invoice of £3,343. This was incurred from repairs to the timing belt tensioners, fuel pump and AC gas recharge, but necessary work to keep it running as it should. Having that work done should be peace of mind for the new keeper. A further £2,496 was spent in March 2022, with a new set of stainless steel manifolds and an exhaust system to replace the tired old ones.

All of the paperwork is in our gallery section, which we encourage you to take a look at and see just how well maintained the Indy has been. There is also a copy of a magazine in which the car was featured alongside an Aston Martin.

We’ve done all include seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
