Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

The perfect mix of Italian styling and performance from two of the biggest names in the world of luxury sports cars.

The 4200 GT was released to the public in 2001 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The first model unveiled was the Spyder, with the coupe following on at the Detroit Auto Show in 2002. Both models were evolutions of the earlier 3200GT. The Spyder, such as the one we have here, is a 2 seater convertible grand tourer with electronic folding roof that stows away in around 30 seconds. As you would expect, the Ferrari/Maserati designed F136 V8 is a fantastic engine to power the Spyder along. Coupled with the F1 style gearbox, the Spyder features the top drawer performance synonymous with the marques reputation.

This particular example comes to us from ~5 year ownership, stored in a dehumidified garage and never driven it in the wet. It presents in very good condition in an attractive and smart "Nero Carbonio" over cream leather interior.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've never really taken too much of a serious interest in cars, that was until I saw the Maserati, and after that I knew I had to have one!

Coming to market from ~5 years ownership, this car served to convert Simon to a hardcore Maserati fan, soon after purchasing a GranTurismo which he still owns and drives to this day. During his years of ownership he has replaced the factory catalytic converters with aftermarket stainless items, as well as having the "F1 clutch" replaced early in ownership ~7,000 miles ago.

However with a Grandson now in the family and the Spyder only having two seats to the GranTurismo's four, the Spyder sits largely unused which has lead to Simon's decision to sell his pride and joy. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section.

Exterior

Finished in Nero Carbonio black paintwork, the Maserati Spyder is a vivid and beautiful example of Italian styling from nose to tail.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are generally in good condition with little more than a bit of brake dust baked into the inner barrels. They are the factory 18" items and present in very good condition. This car features contrast painted brake calipers in red, they are a welcome sporting touch.

The tyres are all in good condition too with a decent amount of tread left, they are DOT marked 2018 making them around four years old - they appear free from any damage or degradation to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The exterior of the car is in good condition and looks to be free from any major damage. All panel gaps appear even and symmetrical and all panels are free of any dents or scuffs.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Generally the "Nero Carbonio" paintwork is in good overall condition. There is a section of flat paintwork on the front bumper near the drivers side headlight, however this looks as though it could be polished back up with relative ease. It would benefit from a light machine polish to remove some of the swirl marks that tend to build up over the years, which are particularly noticeable on black cars.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and side windows all look to be in good condition with no obvious cracks, chips, or scratches to be seen on any of the windows.

Likewise the front and rear lights are undamaged and the rear window on the convertible roof looks to be in good condition too. The Maserati badge on the bonnet suffers from some slight weathering but this is merely cosmetic and does not indicate any deeper seated issues.

Interior

Cream Italian leather upholstery combined with black contrast detailing really helps give the interior the luxury feel that sets it apart from the rest.

Seats and Carpets

The cream leather upholstery is in good condition, with no visible damage or excessive bolster wear present. The embossed Maserati trident on the headrests is a fantastic finishing touch. The drivers seat has had a repair carried out in the past which looks to have been done to a high standard.

The carpets throughout the cabin look to be in good condition, with no real signs of wear. The original Maserati branded floor mats are still present in the car too and these appear to be free of excessive wear also.

Dashboard

The full leather dashboard is all in good condition with no obvious signs of wear. The instruments are all working correctly and there were no fault lights showing at the time of our visit either.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition too in keeping with the rest of the interior. Optioned to match the interior specification, the leather is undamaged and the stitching is all intact. The F1 gearbox controls look in good condition too, the switches on the centre console and the paddles on the steering column.

Mechanics

With a V8 engine jointly developed by Ferrari and Maserati, the 4.2L offers you ~385BHP to play with, delivered to the rear wheels.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 fires up straight away and sounds fantastic. Simon reports that the engine sounds the same as the day he bought it, with no untoward noises having developed in his years of ownership, he's also had the catalytic convertors replaced for Larini Sports units.

The gearbox is an automated manual gearbox, which uses a Formula One style gearbox operated by two F1 style paddles behind the steering wheel to shift up and down. This is all working as it should and Simon informs us he had the clutch replaced in April 2019. Take a look at our "On The Road" video to see the car start from cold and drive out on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension performs a you would expect, giving the car a relative stiffness when going through the corners but also providing enough comfort for the longer journeys. Simon tells us that the suspension is as good as ever and has never caused him any trouble, the same applies for the brakes, the calipers painted red as an option.

The Drive

Driving an Italian sports car is a very enjoyable experience - Simon has had many lovely drives throughout ownership, almost all of them with the roof down on dry sunny summers days.

Speaking to Simon the best part of driving this car is the V8 exhaust note, rumbling away right behind you and serving as a constant reminder of the power under your right foot.

Electrics and Other

When looking around the car we checked various buttons, systems, lights, and functions to be working - which all of them appeared to be. The roof goes up and down without issue, and all lights/buttons/seat adjustments work as expected. The heater works well which is great when the roof is down, Simon hasn't tended to use the AC, and anecdotally can only remember using it once on the way to a wedding with the roof up as to not get the wind through his wifes hair!

The car is fitted with a Parrot phone system including charger, a nice extra, as well as a 5 disc CD changer. Simon is also including a bespoke car cover as part of the sale.

History and Paperwork

The car comes with a healthy number of receipts and a good amount of history as well as a current MOT and a fitted car cover too, this black over cream Spyder is certainly worth a second look.

This car comes to market from ~5 year ownership with a healthy amount of paperwork to show for itself, and a clean MOT. In the current ownership, both catalytic converters having been replaced with Larini Sports units, a new clutch fitted in 2019 ~4,000 miles ago, and a replacement window mechanism on the passenger side fitted too, over and above servicing. Included in the sale is a bespoke car cover too.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
