Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner and Photographer

A real rarity on the UK roads, this high performance GT Coupe with its Ferrari/Maserati V8 engine boasts superior comfort and handling.

The Maserati 4200 GT Coupe is a real modern classic and a great example of stunning Italian design. All that engineering brings with it ~390bhp and the ability to reach 60mph from standstill in under ~5 seconds. Packing a top speed of ~177mph from factory, this is a real performance coupe.

Aiding the handling of the car, the Maserati comes with factory fitted Skyhook suspension with MSP, an electronically controlled suspension system. Also fitted with the car is a "Drive By Wire" setup for faster acceleration response.

Coming to market from ~2 years ownership, the 4200 GT Coupe has ~83,889 miles on clock at time of visit. It's a rare 6 speed manual, only ~214 RHD cars came to the UK as manuals, and the Skyhook suspension and "Drive by Wire" options make it a very attractive package.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Angelo the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I would personally describe this car as better than driving a Ferrari in every respect.

Angelo was looking for a rare, high-performance car when he came across the Maserati. Being a fan of speed and power, the 4200 GT Coupe stood out head and shoulders against its rivals due to its 6 speed manual gearbox and Ferrari/Maserati built engine. The comfort, handling and power of the car was a real draw after the initial test drive, and with only ~214 right hand drive GT 6 speed manuals produced, this was a rare opportunity to own something that not only looked great but performed exceptionally well.

No major work has been needed to be carried out on the car over Angelo's ownership, just a change of the crank shaft sensor and oil pressure sensor. To give the Maserati a little more growl, the exhaust has been upgraded and derestricted and a BMC air filter has been added, although no modifications of the engine have been made.

Angelo lets us know that, "Im only selling the Maserati because I am relocating abroad next year, i'll be buying the same model but left-hand drive as I love the drive I get from this car". He'll be happy to answer questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Italian automotive design by Giorgetto Giugiaro packs plenty of style, practicality and charm into a beautifully crafted body.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18" Maserati alloys were refurbished in 2018 and finished in "Gun Spark Grey", overall the wheels present nicely with the colour scheme matching the vehicle exterior. Looking closer at the detail, the front nearside wheel showed a little sign of kerb rash with the spokes showing a little sign of wear also.

The wheels showed a mix of tyre on the front which were covered with Pirelli's - P Zero Rosso date coded 2011 and P Zero Nero GT coded 2013. On the rear the Avon ZZ5's were date coded 2017. The tread looked to be in a respectable condition although the front tyres may benefit from an upgrade in the future.

Bodywork

The panel gaps are even throughout the car. The overall presentation of the body is great, with no signs of uneven panel gaps or damage. No major dings and scrapes were observed on our visit but the side mirror mounts showed a little sign of wear on the nearside section. There was a slight mark on the driver door handle but nothing that showed a major cause for concern.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a fine coat of "Grigio Alfieri" (paint code 203.633) the paint finish was lovely around the car presenting well, we did note a slight chip on the drivers side door edging but we had to look fairly closely to spot this.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looked clear and overall presented with no issues when were were out on our journey. The front windscreen has had a little repair work to it by a past owner with a chip being filled in 2013. The rear windscreen showing some signs of lamination lift around the edge of the glass but showed no issues with clarity which we've shown in our exterior gallery section.

The Maserati branding, badges and emblems showed really nicely round the car. The front emblem was replaced in January 2022 along with the C pilar badges being replaced in 2010. Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself.

Interior

With generous cabin space, the black leather interior is unmistakably Italian in its style and sweeping lines.

Seats and Carpets

Comfortably seating four passengers, the interior is a welcoming and stylish place with heated front driver and passenger seats. The driver seat also has a 2 option, electronic memory function and has benefitted from some restoration work carried out by a previous owner in 2013.

All seats are in good condition, with the stitching detail retaining their original finish, and Neptunes trident proudly on display on the head rests. The carpets are in good condition but show a little sign of wear on the drivers footwell section. The headlining is good, with no marks or damage that we observed on our visit.

Dashboard

The dash area is setup nicely with the interface within comfortable drivers reach. As usual with Maserati's of this era, the soft-touch buttons do show their age particularly around the centre console / handbrake areas which may benefit from a refresh by the future owner.

Presented without cracks or splits, the leather wrapped dashboard looks good with driver dials and gauges showing without fogging or issue on our visit.

Head over to the interior gallery for more images of the dash section and see the presentation of the cabin section.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three spoke leather bound wheel presents well and is simple in its setup designed to keep the driver focused on the task ahead. The leather gator shows well around the gearstick with a Maserati emblem proudly in place but displays a little sign of ageing to the decal.

We've detailed some more images of the cabin area including the steering wheel in our Interior Gallery section, head over to see more shots of what's on offer with the Maserati.

Mechanics

The engine sound is something to be truly marvelled at, a beautiful sound that just seems to get better and better going through the gears.

Engine and Gearbox

The Maserati is truly a full performance package that would out run most other four-seaters on the market. Packing a Ferrari/Maserati built 4.2L F136R V8 engine under the bonnet, this car has the ability to reach 60mph from standstill in under ~5 seconds. The car has had little major mechanical work carried out but has held good servicing history for most of its life.

The engine showed no signs of struggle when driving and the 6 speed manual gearbox working through its paces without issue. We took the car on a drive around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. On the drive we run through the gears and get an overview of how the car performs.

Suspension and Brakes

Coming out of its January 2022 MOT there were no noted issues with suspension or braking. Out on the road the stopping power and ride showed without issue and worked as to be expected. The front and back disc and pads were replaced in 2014 and 2016 and there were new front brake pads replaced in late 2018.

Take a look at our 'On the Road' video to see in real time how the car responds to the road and driving. Angelo takes the car through its functions when driving whilst giving his overview of the car.

The Drive

With a serious amount of power on hand it's easy to see how Ferrari's influence played a big part in the history of Maserati during the 4200 GT Coupe era. With the quad exhaust sounding exceptional whilst out on the road the Maserati is a real horse-power monster capable of delivering blistering acceleration when driving.

With the electronically adaptive suspension system the car not only handles well but keeps itself settled comfortably and safely on the road. 6 speed manual is a real drivers benefit and with a comfortable and spacious interior, the car gives the driver both style and performance.

Electrics and Other

The Maserati comes with a factory fitted sat nav system which Angelo reports no issue with. Also included as part of the working electric system is the heated driver and passenger seating along with the 2 function electric drivers seat.

Angelo has reported that the electrical system is in line with the rest of the condition of the car, i.e. in full working order to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Presenting beautifully in its Grigio Alfieri over Nero leather interior, the Maserati comes to market from its ~2 years ownership, a rarely seen UK RHD manual with a great factory specification.

The Maserati has benefitted from a good level of servicing over its history with the last service being completed in October 2021. Through its life, several key components have been replaced and upgraded with the car benefitting from a competition clutch install in 2012, radiator upgrade in 2014, new spark plugs and oil filter in October 2022 and the oil pressure sender and crank shaft sensor being replaced November 2022. With ~83,889 on clock at time of visit this Maserati has so much more to offer its future owner.

Aiding the handling of the car, the Maserati comes with factory fitted Skyhook suspension with MSP, an electronically controlled suspension system. Also fitted with the car is a "Drive By Wire" setup for faster acceleration response and auto pop-up head light washers. Coming to market with ~2 years current ownership, Angelo lets us know that the personalised registration plates will also be included as part of the final sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Just curious: why do the centre consul buttons look a bit battered? Is it just the photo or are they a bit worn?

Has the engine been repainted – do you know if the ‘Limited Edition’ plates original and what they mean? Thanks, Harvey
