Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The ultimate gentlemans conveyance with supercar underpinnings; the Maserati Quattroporte.

There aren't many more prestigious names when it comes to it than Maserati, a company that is inextricably linked to supercars and motorsports, yet among the GT and sports cars, the Quattroporte helped place the brand as the ultimate maker of the 4-door luxury performance cars. With over 60 years of provenance of the Quattroporte model, Pininfarina penned the 5th generation in 2003 and in the process offered the promise of stylish luxury for 4 people and their luggage. The DuoSelect semi-automatic transmission, adaptive suspension and a superbly resonant ~394BHP all-aluminium 4.2-litre V8 are complemented by an elegantly crafted and sumptuous cabin housed within an impossibly handsome body-shell. Considered one the finest-looking luxury saloons ever produced, its Supercar performance and fluid handling also provides the owner with a genuine exclusivity that simply couldn't be matched by any other brand.

Maintenance is a key factor in finding a good car, and this one has seen regular servicing and was subject to a complete clutch replacement around 2 years ago. Finished in grey with a tan interior, it comes with two keys, 14 main dealer and independent service stamps and an MOT to November 2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Alan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've enjoyed telling my friends that I drive a Maserati!

Alan bought the car a year and a half ago, having been tempted by the allure of the Quattroporte. Aside from placing an MOT on the car, he hasn’t needed to do much to the car but admits it has not seen much use due to health issues. Alan will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The timeless styling of the Maserati has lasted well, complemented by the condition of the bodywork.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19” alloys are in very good shape having been professionally refurbished in 2018 and therefore reveal no obvious damage.

The front tyres are Pirelli P-Zeros and are less than 3 years old with plenty of life in them, the rears are Continentals both of which are around 10 years old, the off-side rear tyre is legal but is an MOT advisory.

Bodywork

The body is well presented with no significant distractions in terms of dents or corrosion, other than the odd minor mark, which appears to be treatable. The panel fit is flush, with decent shut lines. The bumpers are well-mounted. The passenger doors open and close with ease, but the bonnet latch will need attention and the boot can only be opened via the key fob. Otherwise the struts and hinges are up to the job.

The floor pan looks to be in good shape, although there is a mild sheen of age on some of the underside components but appears to be solid. There were no issues noted in the wheel wells. The two steel covers, inboard to the front jacking points are corroded but are cheap to replace. The front underbody tray cover is damaged, but is another straightforward item to replace.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish is positive, with a decent lustre. The light catches the nose panel with a slightly different hue, but not enough to ruin the overall presentation of the car. There are a few minor marks and blemishes, but much less than the expectations of a car of this age.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are all decent and the lights and lenses are in good shape, although there is some rubber distortion noted in places. The sunroof rubbers have a build-up of outdoor elements.

The chrome trim and embellishments still look fresh and well mounted, aside from minor damage noted on one of the C pillar Trident emblem. Both sections around the wing mirrors show age.

Interior

Italian style and opulence, along with quality materials is in abundance in this cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The tan leather seats are in good shape and have worn their years well with only the driver's seat showing any notable age. Like the whole of the interior, they would benefit from a deep clean to really make the car stand out.

The carpets and mats too are presentable, with no immediate signs of dampness. There is a mild odour of dampness in the car, which Alan suggested may be due to the sunroof seals but we didn’t detect any water ingress beneath it on the day.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free of any damage, and the leather is in decent order, but age has caught up with some of the soft plastic elements, such as the buttons - a typical affliction for cars of this era from Maserati and Ferrari. However, the dashboard veneer and leather have lasted well and are free of any damage. The binnacle and instruments are in good shape, all are legible, Alan has told us everything appears to be functional, but we didn’t test every function.

The leather trim is generally good and appears to be well fitted, just the rear centre console shows damage. The door cards and headlining are good but again a deep clean would pay dividends. The passenger interior door handle isn’t functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is presentable, covered in black leather. However, it is another candidate for a clean-up, with the plastics being effected as mentioned previously.

The car is fitted with paddle shifts, which both appear to be in good shape, although the steering coloumn plastic shroud has marks on it as pictured.

Mechanics

The Quattroporte houses one of the finest-sounding V8 engines ever made.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start did not present any issues, the engine fired up without delay, and the engine idled smoothly without any unwanted tapping or hesitancy. The engine management lights appeared to stay off as the car was on tick-over. The engine bay would benefit from a clean, but the important elements, such as the hoses and ancillaries appeared to be in good shape, with no signs of oil seepage observed.

The paddle shift Duoselelct semi-auto gearbox operates without any reported issues, the car's revs didn’t rise unduly and selected gears with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt taut, with no knocking or thuds heard from the wheels.

There were no immediate issues with the brakes, they slowed the Quattroporte's progress evenly and without drama. No juddering or vibrations were observed during our short drive. There are a handful of advisories noted in regard to the rear pads.

The Drive

One of the attractions of a 4-door Maserati, along with the stunning styling and lavish cabin, is the burble of the V8 engine. Essentially, we have a 4 door Ferrari with the same drama and aural delight. The ride is typically firm but absorbed the roads with ease as the car corned without any significant creaks.

Alan didn’t notice any issues with the steering, and it definitely seemed true during the test drive. He also confirmed that he has not experienced any issues concerning the oil pressure or engine temperature. The test drive was civil, so we were not treated to the unleashing of the ~394BHP V8 but as a calm cruising machine, it fulfilled its duties easily.

Electrics and Other

The car has seen a clutch replacement in recent years, and has always been maintained by main dealers and independent Maserati specialists as documented.

History and Paperwork

Properly and correctly maintained, the Quattroporte has an impressive record of servicing and maintenance.

Originally registered by Maranello In Surrey, the car was serviced by them up to 2016 with ten stamps recorded in the service book. Subsequent servicing has been carried out by Giallo, an independent Maserati specialist. There are a healthy number of invoices with the car documenting historical work to replace the TPMS sensor, Suspension ECU, Air Mass sensor and the whole clutch assembly prior to 2017.

Work carried out over the last four years includes various suspension bushes and rear pads. The wheels were also refurbed in 2018. The car was placed in short-term dry storage until 2023 when Alan bought the car via an auction. Upon its recommissioning, the car was treated to a whole new clutch assembly including the flywheel and bearing along with a replacement windscreen.

It comes with a comprehensive set of booklets in its leather owner wallet, the Maserati boot pack, a stack of MOTs, two keys and a MOT to February 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, are the timing chain tensioners at all noisy on start up or when warm?
Thank you
