Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The GranSport has a very charismatic engine, offering a huge sense of occasion and distinctive styling.

The Maserati GranSport is exactly what it says on the tin. A radically revised version of the original coupe, it offered improved aerodynamics, engine and gearbox. The subtle restyle revealed a cleaner exterior and overhauled interior, which helped bring the brand closer to its Teutonic targets. What guided the GranSport was the six-speed paddle-shift gearbox, growling exhaust and active suspension resulting in a sharper driving experience. The original was the first of a new generation of Maseratis, which critics concluded was the start of the modern turning point of the company, the GranSport is simply an enhancement of a vastly improved rebirth. Maserati had finally come up with the goods and offers a genuine Latin feel to those who have suffered from a surplus of Porsches.

Finished in metallic Nero Carbonio, the car is a decent solid example which shows signs of its age but all the right elements are there to make perfect. The striking interior/exterior colour combination, beautiful engine and understated but handsome looks are enough to still turn heads.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've loved my time with the Maserati but I'm keen to check out the competition!

The seller is in the enviable position of buying sporting and collectors car, so he always has a full driveway full of interesting cars, a number of Italian ones to be specific.

He has decided to put the GranSport for sale to make way for other opportunities away from cars, with some major renovations on his house taking priority.

Exterior

The Giugiaro-styled four-seater has a serious amount of muscle and stance.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19" GranSport anthracite finish alloys are in very good condition, we love the styling, the subtle inclusion of Neptunes trident.

The front offside wheel has signs of curb damage, a scrape on the outer edge. The wheels have been refurbished in the last 3 years. The Pirelli P-Zero tyres have plenty of life in them, showing matching dates for both front and rear. Take a look through the photo and video content for a close up look.

Bodywork

The overall presentation of the body is very good, with no signs of uneven panel gaps or damage. No major dings and scrapes but show signs of typical ageing.

Paint

Finished in Nero Carbonio, it's a colour that really suits this car compared to some more flamboyant combinations you see.

The paint is even in colour across the car, no mismatches spotted across panels. It is a bit flat in places and would probably benefit from a mop and polish. There are small marks at the rear and minor damage on the side skirts.

Glass and Trim

The overall condition of the glass is good, with no major marks or chips and scratches. The front Trident has been painted red to colour match the brake calipers, but all other pieces of trim are complete and original.

Interior

The deeply sculpted seats, the white on blue dials and carbon fibre touches remind you that this is not just any 4-seater Maserati.

Seats and Carpets

A mix of cream leather and patterned fabric inners on the sports seats, helping to keep you from sliding around when cornering at speed.

The driver's seat shows patina in the leather, minor wear on the bolsters and shoulders which could be treated easily we think. The rear and passenger seat are in excellent condition. The carpets are damp-free and in good condition.

Dashboard

The classic Maserati white on blue dials is a really distinct touch to sports cars from this marque.

The interior leather on the whole looks great, there are however some areas like below the door cards where the leather has been caught etc. The switchgear on the car shows its age more than the surrounds etc, typical of an Italian car from this era. The headlining is in very good condition. View the photo and video reviews to see all the details.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A sports focus to the controls on this GranSport. Centre marking on the steering wheel, a mix of leather and carbon fibre.

The steering wheel and gear paddles are in excellent condition.

Mechanics

The GranSport is poised and responsive, with terrific turn-in and exceptional traction.

Engine and Gearbox

What a sound that comes from the naturally aspirated Ferrari-Maserati V8.

The engine starts up with no problem at all, and ticks over correctly with no issues without warning lights and just some vapour from the cold morning. The engine presentation itself looks in line with the cars age and mileage. Watch the video to hear that lovely V8.

The clutch was changed around 2 years ago, along with the F1 pump as documented in the service history. Since then, the cars covered a maximum of ~3,000 miles so should have good life left in it. The owner is sourcing a clutch wear report.

Suspension and Brakes

No problems with the condition of the suspension or brakes reported, with no evidence of scoring on the discs. Brakes operate without squeals and the pads have plenty of life in them.

The Drive

The talents of the GranSport remain a little too well hidden for its own good yet the car was seen as involving to drive as the Porsche 911.

The V8 fires up with a glorious rumble, the talent of its chassis, combined with the responsive but not overly sharp steering acts as you would expect a GT car to behave. However, it is also surprisingly manageable off the Autoroutes to the South of France. A car to buy and cherish now because the GranSport is genuinely up there with the best to drive.

Electrics and Other

All items, with the exception of the boot open warning light function correctly. The inner insulation of the bonnet reflects the age of the car and would benefit cleaning and repair. Some of the badging also show signs of age too.

History and Paperwork

A Ferrari-Maserati V8, attractive colourway of black over cream, and a UK RHD example with ~71,000 miles, we think this is a very attractive GranSport.

The car has service history stamps in the book, with evidence that its use has been slowed down in the past 5 years, covering less than 10K. Photographed as usual is paperwork to show the upkeep and maintenance in recent years, including the restoration of the alloy wheels.

With the colour combination on this car, and the condition and history it comes with makes it a really nice example coming on to the market for sale.
