Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional Consigner

Coming from long term family ownership, first acquired from the original owner in 1986.

Introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, and produced from 1963 through 1971. This UK RHD 250 SL is a lovely example of the 2-door convertible series that has become an absolute stalwart for Mercedes-Benz over the years. Benefitting from a full body restoration in 1993 and great care ever since, the current owner, Caroline, will be sad to see it leave the family after some 34 years.

The 250SL is the rarest of the W113 bunch having been in production for the shortest amount of time from 12.1966 - 01.1968, just over one year of production with 5,196 produced worldwide.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Caroline the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We've had the car in the family since 1986, and I've had stewardship since 2014.

Caroline inherited the Pagoda from her late father, keeping and caring for the car over the past 6 years. Her father and mother bought the car from the original owner back in 1986, using the car for the first years, before commissioning a full back to factory spec restoration in 1993.

Caroline has kept the car running and on the road in her ownership, the car has covered just 1,000 miles in the last 15 years. Because of this, Caroline feels it would be better that the car goes to a new home where someone will use the car more frequently and so has decided to sell the car.

Exterior

Reverted back to the original factory colour during a full restoration in 1993.

Wheels and Tyres

The Pagoda is sitting on those classic Mercedes chrome hub-capped wheels with colour-matched to centres. Looking in good condition, in line with the cars age.

Period-correct Michelin MXV tyres were fit and balanced back in August 2014 and have covered a minimal mileage, lots of tread and miles to go on these.

Bodywork

Having undergone a full body restoration back in 1993 where some areas of corrosion were professionally treated and panelled, the car still looks great today.

All shut lines and panel gaps look good, a sign of the work that was carried out and the subsequent care of the car. The low mileage covered in the car, and the car being dry stored mean the bodywork shows little sign of corrosion. Just a couple of areas we noticed; small area on the rear nearside wheel arch, surface rust on the end of the sills.

Paint

Originally, the car was produced in this off-white colour. The previous owner had the car sprayed in a shade of red, as can be seen in the history photos. However, Caroline's father commissioned a restoration back to factory colour combination in 1993.

With a contrasting black hardtop, the car looks stunning. All paint looks even in colour and finish across the car, just a few nicks here and there like a small mark on one leading edge of the boot and a small scrape on one of the wheel arches. Take a look at the video and photographs to see the details.

Glass and Trim

All glass and seals were replaced back in 1993 when the car was expertly restored. They look great to this day, only on close inspection you see the usual marks on some of the chrome trim, and a couple of small dents in some chrome trim too. It's a similar story with the hard top too, it looks lovely, but there are a couple of small dents at the front centre of it that you might pick out in the photographs.

You'll see some pictures of the hard top off, and the soft top up, it looks in great condition.

Interior

Retaining a lot of originality, that patina look is classy and authentic.

Seats and Carpets

The black MB-Tex seats look in good condition, the material being quite hard wearing stuff.

Some rubber matting is in place in the footwells, and the remaining carpet trim looks good and black across the car, the interior showing the age of the car in contrast to the exterior we would say.

Dashboard

The colour-matching off-white dashboard looks stunning. Clean and vibrant and in excellent condition, and the wood trip at the top of the dash looks good.

The dials look great, really clear and legible, the white and black contrast across the exterior and interior of the car gives it a very ergonomic feel.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car has its original steering wheel and gear stick and both are in excellent condition, although the gear selector panel could do with a little refurbishment if the new owner wishes it to shine.

Mechanics

The rarest of the W113 family, this example had an engine rebuild 6 years ago.

Engine and Gearbox

We filmed the engine running as we just got it out of storage on our visit. The engine sounds smooth whilst the exhaust pipe is displaying no abnormal smoke.

As mentioned, the 2.5L engine is the rarest form of the W113 model. The engine was rebuilt with a worn camshaft and timing chains etc replaced in 2014. The car's covered around 500 miles since then, and had a new ignition work in 2016 to put it in a great usable condition for the new owner to enjoy.

Suspension and Brakes

A combination of excellent suspension, powerful brakes and complimentary tyres provide a smooth drive. The 250 SL offered rear disc brakes over its siblings and still had the double-wishbone front suspension and an independent single-joint, low-pivot swing rear-axle with transverse compensator spring.

There are some invoices detailing minor repairs to the brakes in the past that can be seen in the history section.

The Drive

The 250 SL is a wonderful sports coupe / convertible. Giving a versatile experience with the optional hardtop. The rear discs offer improved agility over earlier models.

Electrics and Other

Using a 12-volt electrical system, we saw no issues upon our visit. The car has been cared for throughout Caroline and her family's ownership of the car.

History and Paperwork

With long term family ownership and documents to track the cars mileage, this UK RHD is a great example.

After acquiring the car in 1986, Caroline's father later commissioned a full body restoration on the vehicle that reverted the car back to its original off-white colour.

Invoices of the restoration work, and most of the MOTs in the family ownership help to track its provenance over time. Looking at the condition of the car, and the mileage covered with the current owners, the odometer reading is believed to be true to the car.

Sorry just saw the soft top pics.
Does it open and close easily? We used to have trouble stowing it, it had to be squeezed in…

Do you have any history of the car before 1986? Do you have a copy of the Mercedes data card?
