This Mercedes 280e is the W114 model and features the larger and more desirable six cylinder engine, compared to the W115 model that has four cylinders.
The W114 was first introduced back in 1968 and is instantly recognisable by the vertical headlights and more boxy design when compared to earlier cars.
Being a 1975 model, this car is the ‘face lift’ version with a lower bonnet line, broader grill and single front bumper.
Bob Frendt has owned this car for nearly 1.5 years after purchasing it from a collector in Ireland back in November 2016.
This is a UK car and was transported to Ireland in 2008 and stayed there until Bob bought it in 2016.
During Bob’s ownership, he has recommissioned the car and actioned basic servicing together with two new front wings (from original old stock). Bob has stored the car in a dry garage during this time.
Bob is a Mercedes man through and through. In fact he was wearing most of the the brands clothes when we went to visit him! However, the time has come for Bob to reduce his collection and this car now has to find a new owner.
The car has been resprayed at some point in its life and more recently Bob has had the wings sprayed after fitting new ones last year. The car is in really good condition with no visible signs of any serious rust.
Wheels & Tyres
The car is fitted with its original wheels and has matching blue centre caps. All wheels and tyres are in good condition as highlighted in the media pack.
Bodywork
All panels are free from parking dents and the shut-lines across the entire car look visibly correct and all doors close evenly. There is a very slight crease on the NSR door if you look down the panel with reflecting light (it’s very slight – see the video).
Paint
The paint is in good visible condition. We didn’t use the paint depth gauge on this vehicle due to the fact its been resprayed. There are a couple of small stone chips on the off-side leading edge of the bonnet. A small area of visible paint repair on the corner of the OSR wing. Please see the videos and images to see these defects.
Glass and Trim
Glass and trim are all in good order.
The interior is in amazing original condition. It really is a lovely place to be as you waft around in comfort.
Seats and Carpets
All seats and carpets are in good condition with no rips or tears.
Dashboard
The dashboard is in original condition. The radio has been changed, however, Bob has a period correct radio that he tells us was originally supplied with the car. The new owner can fit this back if required.
Steering Wheel / Gear Stick
Both are original and in good condition as highlighted in our media pack.
I found no issues on the short run I took with Bob. We drove about 2 miles around a business estate, so we only went to a maximum of 30 mph.
Engine and Gearbox
The car started first go from cold (see video) even through it hadn’t been used for a number of months. At first the idling was a little rough, however, this cleared on the short run around the business park. The gear changed below 30mph correctly, of course no other gears were selected on our short run, however, Bob confirms to us there are no issues at any speed.
Suspension and Brakes
No knocks or rattles were observed on the short trip. I did notice a slight squeaking in the steering. Bob has confirmed the hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and he thinks it may be due to a dry joint, as the car has had such little use recently.
The Drive
The car is on a SORN, so we couldn’t drive it on the main road, however, we did drive it around a local business park and it went very well. You can see a short clip of the car running , along with some more footage in our “Meet The Owner” video.
Electrics and Other
Bob reports no electrical issues with everything working as it should.
This car has covered just 77,000 miles, and is largely substantiated by history supplied by Bob. Although we can’t guarantee the mileage, we can say the interior and wear on seats and steering wheel does look in line with the mileage of the car.
We have checked the VIN number and it matches the original paperwork; we couldn’t check the engine number on our visit, however, Bob informs us it’s the original engine.
Mileage recorded on HPI check as follows:
77,730 miles recorded on 4 Nov 2016
77,729 miles recorded on 3 Nov 2016
70,416 miles recorded on 18 Mar 2008
This car really wowed us – it’s lovely and looks amazing in the blue with chrome trim.
We didn’t expect to see such a lovely and original 208e; Bob really underplayed the car on the phone to us and has also set a very realistic and low reserve.
If you’re looking for a really good, original and well maintained 280e then this is it; look no further. It’s certainly one I would like in my collection and be proud to drive and own.

Car sold to markryan…. nice buy Mark 🙂
Hi Bob.
Does the car have a current MOT and have you sorted out the noise from the steering.
Thanks.
No i have not because the weather has been too bad to get car out. The steering noise is from a dry joint and it needs a little wd40 spraying on it but i cant get under it till i get it out. It really is nothing to bother about. The car has not been out in 10months for personal reasons it needs useing and enjoying. If the car reaches 5k i will mot it but from May it will be exempt by way of its age. Thank you.
Good news everyone… Bob has lowered the reserve to £4,500 so this car is NOW ON SALE. A massive bargain for this beautiful W114 but I’m sure bidding will be strong on the last day tomorrow…
Ok.
This being the w114 and there are plenty of photos of the car but none of the chassis as this area is a major problem. Can i ask if you have any photos of the rear area running down from the coil spring to the jacking point on the inside as this is a major weak spot. Also the front floor riggers which is also a weak spot.
No i dont have photos of the areas you asked for but i can say that the underneath is rock solid. I have had many 108s and 114/5s over the past 40years and know what are good and bad points. There are NO bad points on this car. I am happy for any inspection to be carried out at buyers costs.
Where can this car be viewed?
Has the squeaky steering issue been resolved yet?
It is 4 miles from Wetherby at YO26 7 and the steering noise is something i need to look at. It only started after the car had been parked up for many months without being driven.
Bidding is going well… shows what a good car this one is. I want this car so badly… but no more garages left 🙁
Buy more garage space… simple
And that’s why you get offered big jobs in other countries 🙂
Got me!
I’m liking. Cool car. Cheap/non-existent motoring costs if kept nice and a weekend/summer driver. Cheap insurance (c100 GBP), no road tax. A lot of like about this car
A great cabin to cruise around in, even as a passenger in the back it feels very spacious.
Auction is now live… this is a stunning car and certain the new owner will be pleased. As always, say what you think here and let Bob know if you have any questions.
