Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Arguably one of the most beautiful coupé of the '80s - the gorgeous 450 SLC.

The Mercedes R107 is a beautiful looking car and has matured nicely over the last couple of decades – they are superbly built and deserve the title of ‘over-engineered’. It’s surprising what you can get for your money as they have always been great value compared to other classics of similar eras / build quality, and even their convertible sibling. This is a car you can pull up in anywhere and get admiring glances, and it is finished off with a 4.5 litre V8, giving a little bit more economy over the 5.0 or 5.6 litre.

The C107 is the luxury two-door hardtop coupé variant of the SL known as the SLC (C107), and if you thought the SL was beautiful, the SLC takes it to the next level. With a longer wheelbase, the sleek coupé gains a full-size rear seat, bringing the benefits of a saloon, but in the style of a sporty coupé.

This lovely example belongs to Chris, who inherited it from his stepfather's estate, where it had been since 2018.

Chris has recently had the car recommissioned and checked over, so it's now ready for the new lucky custodian.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Although this is a lovely car, which I would love to keep, I just don’t have the room.

When you inherit a car, it’s certainly a nice thing, and you were thought a lot of by the person leaving it to you. Chris loves the car and would like to enjoy it more, but with a growing family who all have cars, storing the Mercedes is quite tricky, and he doesn't want to leave it covered up on the drive. Which means, unfortunately, he is letting the classic Mercedes go to a new home.

Please feel free to ask Chris any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The sleek lines of the pillarless coupé are timeless - making the C107 one of the prettiest cars out there.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mercedes Mexican Hat Bundt wheels are in good condition. There is a small amount of paint flaking off in places, but your local wheel refurbisher could rectify this quite quickly.

The Fulda tyres are all matching, with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Walking around the SLC, you will notice how straight the car is. The panel gaps are good, and there are no dings to point out. Some welding has been carried out to areas on the floor and sills, but this looks to have been done to a good standard.

Please see the paperwork section to review the work that's been actioned on the body in recent years.

Please also take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior, for you to make up your own minds on the condition.

Paint

Finished in the original colour of Brilliant Sliver, the 450 SLC presents exceptionally well. There is one small blemish/blister on the top edge of the driver’s wing, but this hasn’t broken through the paint.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows and rear screen are in very good condition with no excessive scratches. The seals and chrome trim are all in excellent condition and have a bright finish.

Internally are the louvers in the rear windows, which just look so cool.

The headlights, indicators and rear lights are in good order with no chips or splits.

The brightwork on the bumpers and grille of the SLC is in excellent order, with no apparent signs of tarnishing.

Interior

Blue fabric works so well with the silver exterior - a timeless combination.

Seats and Carpets

Inside the 450SL, the seats are finished in blue material. There is a small amount of wear just starting on the driver’s bolster, and on the passenger side it has unfortunately worn through in a couple of places. We think it is a possibility that an experienced trimmer could repair this.

The carpets are in excellent condition and show no real signs of any wear. The headlining sits nice and tight and is free from any stains. The boot presents well inside, and the original spare alloy wheel is in place.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any splits or cracks. The instruments work correctly, and the odometer has a reading of ~98,640 miles at the time of our visit. The center section is wood veneer and is in good order with no cracks to the lacquer.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel looks to be the original and is in good condition with no signs of heavy use. The automatic gearstick is in nice condition with minimal wear, and the surround is free from any cracks.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Mercedes claimed 214bhp and 0-62mph time in 8.8 seconds with a top speed of 134mph - the 450 SLC makes a lovely cruiser.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 fires up straight away with no hesitation, as can be seen in our cold start video. The car has recently been checked over and runs as expected with no untoward noises.

The gear change is smooth, and the 450 pulls well when needed through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

It’s easy to see why people get excited about the SL range. The over-engineered suspension is perfect on the road, easily soaking up uneven roads. No knocks or bangs are coming from either corner of the suspension.

The brakes were also checked over, and a new caliper has been fitted - these bring the car to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

The perfect cruiser, drop all the windows and let the pillarless coupe show off its stunning lines as you glide down the road with the sound of the V8 burbling away.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car has some very light wear to the images on the buttons, as you would expect for the age of the vehicle, but are reported to be working correctly, apart from the heaters as during our visit the fan wouldn’t turn off (maybe a simple switch fix).

There is a Pioneer radio, which could be the original, or looks period looking for the age of the Mercedes.

History and Paperwork

The Mercedes comes with an excellent well documented history - it's a nice usable example with a very low reserve.

The original handbook is present along with the service book that has a good number of stamps. Several previous MOT certificates are present and a number of invoices showing parts purchased and work carried out are all a very good signs. Put these things together with the car's condition, and it would appear to be a Mercedes 450 SLC which has been very well cared for.

We get a lot of SLCs submitted to us, but the quality often falls below our standards, so we don't take them on. This appears to be a lovely example 450 SLC which are fast becoming more difficult to find as time goes on, especially in this condition.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, and V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
