Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Luxury and elegance put Mercedes-Benz at the top of their game, they didn't disappoint with the W123s sprung seats, power steering and central locking.

In 1976, Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 executive saloon to replace the most successful selling Mercedes to date, the W115. With a more contemporary look over the W115, the W123 had a longer wheelbase, round headlights and a less angular look on the styling side of things. Later in the European production, the headlights were changed to rectangular, whereas North America retained the round headlights. In addition, from 1980, it was packed with safety features and creature comforts such as power steering, central locking and an electric sunroof. All these things you may think of as standard nowadays, but remember, this was the 80s, which put Mercedes-Benz up there at the top of the tree for elegance and luxury.

This particular car is coming to auction from 3 years from a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast. It has what is believed to be a genuine mileage of ~50,000 and has been restored over time to leave it in excellent condition. Most of these W123's you see come to market are worse for wear, it's a pleasant surprise to find an example like this, cherished and prepared for sale to a very high standard.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I searched high and low for a W123 Mercedes-Benz, when I found this, I thought the seller was joking when he said how good it was - how wrong was I!

Brian is the owner of this stunning 1983 Mercedes-Benz 200 W123, with just ~49,562 miles covered in 39 years. The car was purchased 3 years ago in what is reported to be original condition, having never had any paintwork, and the interior is also original. There is no doubt the car is in stunning condition. Brian loves to have everything just right with his cars, which you will see, and it is a true testament to him when you take a closer look at this beautiful Mercedes-Benz 200 W123.

With three years passed, the car has only been used a handful of times. Brian has decided to sell it in favour of owning a more modern car that suits his needs better than the Mercedes. He would rather see the car go to another enthusiast who will take it and show it off in all its glory. Brian will be on hand to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The superb saloon oozes style and sophistication - perfect for the discerning lady or gentleman.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are in good condition and finished off with the original hubcaps. These had the body-coloured centre and chrome outers.

The tyres are all matching and have a good amount of tread remaining. The spare wheel is believed never to have been on the car, and has the original Goodyear tyre. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

It has to be seen to be believed! The W123 is in excellent order. There are no dings or dents to mention when looking around the car. Opening the doors, you could well be back in the showroom in 1983; the doors open and close just like a new car. All of the panels look to align as they should with no areas for concern, as you would expect for such an original car.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

Finished in "Sahara Beige", the 200 is reported to be the original ~49,562 mile paint, and it really is in excellent condition. There are a couple of tiny marks which have been touched in or should polish out. The finish has a nice shine to it with no signs of any excessive swirl marks. It has clearly been well cared for.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this classic Mercedes-Benz W123 at its absolute best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in excellent condition, and there are no scratches to mention to any of the glass, and the trims around the windows look to be free from any tarnishing.

The headlights have been painstakingly split down to enable them to be cleaned, but the end result is fantastic; they look as good as new. The indicators are also in excellent condition, as are the rear lights.

Please see our detailed gallery showing the full exterior.

Interior

The interior is something else, 1983 and all original - it is in exceptional condition!

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in (057) "Henna Red" fabric which, as you can see from the gallery, is in excellent condition and shows very little if any signs of wear, even to the driver's seat. The door cards are in the same condition as the rear seat, which really doesn't look to have been sat in.

The carpets again are stunning and in like-new condition. There are a set of fitted mats to match the seats, which are also in excellent condition. Inside, the boot is also in good order, with no signs of any corrosion hiding under the carpet, and it all looks to be factory fresh. The spare wheel is present, along with the jack and tool roll.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is superb, with no splits or cracks to mention. The instrument cluster is bright and clear, with the odometer reading ~49,562 miles, and all the gauges are working as they should. The Zebrano trim inlay is in good condition, which flows down onto the centre console, and is excellent and has no signs of cracking to the lacquered finish.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is original and in good order, with very little wear to be seen to the rim. The gear knob clearly shows the 1-4 plus R, and the gaiter is free from any tears.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The reliable M102 engine comes in the form of a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder, fuelled with a carburettor and coupled to a 4-speed gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine in the W123 has been given a full freshen up to tidy up some of the aluminium items which oxidise over time and don’t quite look as fresh as they once did. Brian entrusted this task to MCP Restorations Ltd, who specialise in classic Mercedes-Benz.

This involved some extensive work which can be seen in the paperwork section, and by Brian’s own admission, he did get a little carried away with how far to take it, but after £2407.74, the end result was worth it.

With two pumps of the accelerator and a turn of the key, the Mercedes fires into life perfectly and sounds excellent with no ticking or tapping. The smooth 2.0 litre happily idles away. You can view the car starting from cold on our Mechanical Review video. Also, in the video, you can see the car on the move where there are no noises to be concerned about apart from the odd spring squeaking in the comfy sprung seats.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension all looks to be in good order, with no leaks spotted on our visit. The ride in the car is comfortable as the 200 soaks up any uneven road with ease. Thre are no unwanted noises coming from either corner of the vehicle or the transmission.

The brakes are working as they should, bringing the Mercedes to a halt in a straight line, with no juddering through the brake pedal.

The Drive

Classy, retro, stylish, the Mercedes-Benz 200 W123 has it all on offer. This car certainly draws attention. Whilst we were on our visit, one person turned around to come and check out the classic Merc, and another pulled over to ask about it. Indeed, it is not short of admirers and is a car that could easily be used daily as it is a pleasure to be in and drive or draw the crowds at a classic car show where it certainly won’t look out of place on any show field.

Electrics and Other

Everything is working just as it should. A Blaupunkt radio cassette player is fitted, believed to be the original. The heater controls are in very good condition with no real wear to point out. There is the notable addition of an electric sunroof that works correctly when both opening and closing.

History and Paperwork

After 17 years in storage, the Mercedes-Benz finally saw the roads again in 2019 when Brian purchased this low mileage German classic.

As mentioned earlier, Brian's attention to detail is second to none when it comes to presenting and preparing his cars, and the history file is no exception. The previous keeper had had the car in storage for over 17 years, and when he decided to part with it, he prepared a folder with some photos of the car for the new keeper. Brian has since added to this with original sales brochures for the model, and his invoices for work and parts carried out.

Since coming out of hiding in 2019, the vehicle has had three MOT tests, all of which have passed with no advisories, and the current MOT is valid until 13th September 2022.
You do see the odd W123 for sale, but finding one in this original condition is entirely another story. They are so few and far between, making this an extremely rare car to own in this superb unrestored condition.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello Brian. This looks a remarkable vehicle which I’m interested in. Unless I’ve missed it, the service history doesn’t look (near) complete. Could you offer any further information on this? Many thanks.
Gary
