Mercedes-Benz have produced the SL range since 1954, with the R107 being the third generation first introduced in 1971. World-renowned performance, styling, and reliability made the R107 one of Mercedes best selling models at the time, shipping over 50,000 units. The 2.8L engine is mated to a four-speed auto, enclosed in a two-door monocoque shell with independent suspension, coil springs and anti-roll bars at the front and rear. The steering was power-assisted featuring the Daimler-Benz re-circulating ball system.
This example comes to market from ~7 years of ownership, recently underwent work and received a vehicle health check from the SL SHOP in May. It has seen new front wings, repairs to panels, new jacking points, chrome fitting kits, window and hard top seals, moulding trim grommets, a front grill, window seals, blower motor, and a rear bench with a 3-point seatbelt set. Hi there,
There is a discrepancy between the description of the drive as stated by SL Shop and the Trade Classics driver. Particularly, re the auto gear change slipping and the acceleration being poor.
Could you please clarify?

Hi,
To be honest no one but the SL Shop has noticed the gears slipping but I purchased a gear box service kit which has not been done yet. We videod the drive in which I did various speeds so have a listen.
The acceleration issue has been fixed. A new throttle linkage has been fitted. Evidently over time the plastic becomes brittle, cracks and falls out. It was 40 years old so was very tired. Very noticeable difference with the new one fitted. The car is a pleasure to drive.

I note in the previous MOT there was a failure * Offside Front Outer Vehicle structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced tow eye support area (6.1.1 (c) (i))*
What was this and what works were carried out to rectify?
Have the break pipes been replaced?

Hi,
Regarding last years MOT failure with the tow eye, my mechanic rectified this to ensure it passed its’ MOT at retest.
The known issues are as advised by the SL Shop when I took the car to be assessed by them to sell as I knew I might have to move or to continue refurbishing the car.
As you are probably aware the SL Shop assesses a car in relation too how close it is to a concours-quality car. While the car is in an excellent condition for its age, it is not as new. I therefore planned to commission my mechanic to sort out the brakes, etc over this winter.
In the meantime it has been MOT ‘d with no advisories so the red items aren’t currently an issue from a DVLA point of view but they will be if not addressed by it’s next MOT.
My mechanic therefore ordered all the parts at a cost of £474.90 to address the red items on the checklist (included in the sale).
Given that my relocation can’t accommodate me keeping the car and I can’t get the work done before I move, I have deiced to sell it instead.

Are the wing mirrors manually or electrically foldable?
Hi. The driver side is manually adjusted and the passenger side is electronically adjusted. Surprised me when I first got the car but it’s efficient! This means that the mirrors can only be manually folded in.
