Beautiful lines and legendary build quality - a Mercedes thoroughbred.

Launched in 1971 and in production for 18 years the 280SL (R107) built on the legacy of the the iconic W113 Pagoda it replaced. Retaining much of the character of the earlier cars the 280SL offered an executive sports car with uncluttered good looks and exceptional Mercedes build quality.

This car is a 1984 2.8 litre, straight six, twin cam version with a specified 0 to 60 time of 10.4 seconds and a top speed of 121mph. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a smooth 4 speed automatic gearbox. The car is a stunning bright red, arguably the best colour for these cars, and both the bodywork and the interior are in great condition.

The car also comes with both hard and soft tops - a classic tourer that is ready to use and enjoy for 2022.

"It's a beautiful car and everything I expected - I just don't use it as much as I should and it really deserves to go to a new owner who can properly enjoy it".

Simply stunning - red has to be one of the best colours for these cars

Wheels and Tyres

This car is equipped with the particularly attractive 14 inch alloy "Mexican Hat" wheels which are all in great shape with no apparent damage. The are shod with 195/70/R14 tyres which are showing some signs of age related wear.

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork is very good. The car stands straight and true, shut lines appear even and doors, bonnet and boot all open and close cleanly and precisely.

There are some marks on the rear valance and some small areas of corrosion on the base of the wings and the sills - the latter of which is identified as an advisory on the recent MOT.

Paint

Overall the paint is stunning and presents very well.

The bright red is polished to a deep shine and the finish is even and consistent.

The colour is set off beautifully by the chrome trim and the tan interior

Glass and Trim

Chromework and badging is in remarkably good condition with no significant pitting or flaws.

The window and mirror glass is clear with no apparent damage

Typically Mercedes - the "office" is clean, elegant and purposeful - hard to believe this car is 37 years old.

Seats and Carpets

The check cloth seats are in great condition with no rips or tears that we could see. The carpets are clean and protected on both the driver and passenger sides with matching floormats. The undersides of the doors are in great condition and the headlining is clean and unmarked. There are some shoe marks on the drivers door pocket.

Dashboard

Typically Mercedes, the dashboard is clear and uncluttered with dials and instruments clearly visible. Everything is in remarkably good condition with no obvious damage or fading.

James confirms all dials and switches work exactly as they should - no known issues.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The iconic Mercedes steering wheel is in great shape and the drive selector sits smartly it its wood finish surround. Both match the general high quality and great condition of the interior.

Mechanics

Effortless cruising and smooth acceleration from the 2.8 Litre, twin cam, six cylinder.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts easily and quickly settles down to a steady idle. As can be seen from cold start video, emissions are clear and there are no untoward knocks or rattles.

The automatic gearbox moves through the changes cleanly, quietly and precisely.

Suspension and Brakes

James confirms brakes and suspension work exactly as they should.

The car stops evenly and cleanly as can be seen from the On The Road video.

The Drive

The car is comfortable and smooth, seems to pull strongly and stops well. All that you would expect from a car of this quality

Electrics and Other

The car is equipped with a Goodmans radio and CD player. Switches and dials all appear okay, in good condition and James confirms all electrics work as they should.

The car is equipped with a fire extinguisher positioned under the front of the passenger seat.

A fantastic opportunity to enjoy 2022 in - not out of place at shows or cruising the continent and ready to use, cherish and enjoy.

This 280SL is a great example. It comes with original owners handbook, MOT certificates dating back to 2001 and various receipts for works. The car was newly MOT'd in October of this year and has some advisories which a new owner may wish to attend to.
