Introduction
Alan Stuart
After nearly four decades of being on the road this beautiful SL is just as good today as it was during the 80s.
Having been privately owned for 13 years this 280 SL has really been part of the family for the current owner. Presented beautifully, the Mercedes has really stood the test of time despite pushing on for nearly 40 years worth of motoring prestige. A 2.8L, 6 cylinder twin cam sits neatly underneath the bonnet and being mainly garaged over its past few years the car still holds a lovely degree of presentation from front to back.
Introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the R107 was touted as "a high performance sports car providing a great degree of travelling comfort", even after all this time we can see how this statement really still applies. Over the years the SL series has grown from sports car to comfortable grand tourer, you've only got to take a look over our video section and see the 280 SL on the road to appreciate the comfort and luxury this car provides.
A lovely dose of grunt is still prevalent in the 280 SL giving the driver the best of both worlds with style and power. With German engineering heritage, precision detailing through the interior and the unmistakable Mercedes class this car is one not to be missed.

Update – The seller Carroll has removed the reserve on the auction, this car will sell to the highest bid in the auction. Good luck if you’re involved in the bidding. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics
Hi Carroll
I notice that on photo 57 of the exterior there appears to be some form of jagged split/gap along the sill under the drivers side door, along with some different texture that seems to indicate a repair of some sort. Can you give further details as to what lies beneath – particularly the gap, as it looks like it would allow water ingress.
Thanks.
John
Photo 57 appears to be a front end shot. You may mean photo 59 but as far as I can see you are referring to a reflection of the brick paving?
Hi, my mistake, I meant photo 57 of the mechanics shots. It shows the sill underneath the drivers door.
In discussions with my garage, I’ve always understood this to be part of the underfloor sealing. I’ve never experienced water ingress to the floor and as the report says, there is no evidence of any water damage at any time. Hope this helps.
Hello. Can I come and view the SL this weekend please? I’m an hour away. If you could let me know ASAP. Many thanks
Best wishes
Gabriel
Sure. Either of Sunday or Monday as long as we can tie down a time around 4pm?
You’ll need to get clearance from Trade Classics first
I went through the the buyers faq’s and found that the viewing is down to the seller and prospective buyer. There is no need to contact Trade classics. I have messaged them anyway although I doubt they will message me before tomorrow. So I f you happy to go ahead I can come and view tomorrow around 4pm if I have the address of course.
Best wishes
Gabriel
Sorry but Trade Classics are very clear that you have to go through their vetting process first
Hello, has the SL had any welding done to it in your ownership please?
Soon after I bought the car, I noticed that had been water ingress into the back seats. After detailed examination at my local repairer, it was found that there must have been some rear-end repairs that had not been completed properly which required some welding to seal a joint. I also had the rear seat cushions repaired & recovered. After the recent MOT, some rust damage was observed offside near the foot pedals so that required some welding. Apparently water had managed to get under the under floor seal causing it to break away. The local repairer (very reliable) checked the whole underfloor and pronounced it sound.
