Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

After nearly four decades of being on the road this beautiful SL is just as good today as it was during the 80s.

Having been privately owned for 13 years this 280 SL has really been part of the family for the current owner. Presented beautifully, the Mercedes has really stood the test of time despite pushing on for nearly 40 years worth of motoring prestige. A 2.8L, 6 cylinder twin cam sits neatly underneath the bonnet and being mainly garaged over its past few years the car still holds a lovely degree of presentation from front to back.

Introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the R107 was touted as "a high performance sports car providing a great degree of travelling comfort", even after all this time we can see how this statement really still applies. Over the years the SL series has grown from sports car to comfortable grand tourer, you've only got to take a look over our video section and see the 280 SL on the road to appreciate the comfort and luxury this car provides.

A lovely dose of grunt is still prevalent in the 280 SL giving the driver the best of both worlds with style and power. With German engineering heritage, precision detailing through the interior and the unmistakable Mercedes class this car is one not to be missed.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Carroll the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Classic cars never go out of fashion, and this one still looks the business!

Carroll had always wanted a quality convertible for long-distance European touring, his go to choice was a Mercedes mainly due to his love for the cars and the support given for parts and manufacturing. "My preference was always for gold colouring, so when I saw the 280 SL advertised in a classic car magazine, I went for it and have been delighted ever since". Taking in a large part of Europe covering Switzerland, Netherlands and France, the car has comfortably taken the current owner on many lovely adventures.

Aiming to keep the car in its original condition the only major work completed by Carroll is a re-core of the radiator, other than that only minor work has been completed and when age or circumstances have necessitated. "I've wanted to keep the car without any big changes to it, I have had the stereo replaced for a more modern version but I've kept the original for the next owner".

"My reason for selling is simply that circumstances no longer permit any meaningful use. Time to move it on to another caring owner who can gain considerable enjoyment, particularly with the roof down". Carroll will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The luxury and comfort of this 280 SL makes this car something that you really don't want to miss.

Wheels and Tyres

Showing in a really nice condition and branded with the Mercedes 3 pointed star, the wheels look good all around. The are upgraded items, from the later facelift of the R107.

Matched with a set of 4 Pirelli's on either side it was great to see the Mercedes sitting proud. Carroll lets us know that when not in use, the 280 SL sits on a set of tyre savers in the garage to prevent issues with flat spots or deflation.

Take a look over the exterior video section to take a look for yourselves and make your own decisions about the condition on display here.

Bodywork

The shut lines look really great around the Mercedes, all sitting well, its obvious from looking over the car that its been really well looked after over its lifetime. We noticed a slight ding in the drivers side door but not one that didn't feel couldn't be pulled out to bring the panelling back to a tip top condition.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the images and videos for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Great looking all round the vehicle it was excellent to see such a good looking Mercedes. Champagne (473) is such an iconic colour for these cars and it gets even better when the paint condition still shows nicely even after nearly four decades.

Clearly looked after, the paint finish is still lovely across the panelling. The owner lets us know that due to garaging, he hasn't needed to spend a great deal of time polishing and bringing back the original shine.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Reflecting the condition the rest of the car, the glass and trim show in a great condition with no cause for concern that we noted looking over the car.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our "Exterior review" video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different angles.

Interior

Cherished for 13 years, this SL is a beautiful taste of luxury 80's motoring, the retro check cloth interior adding to the visual appeal.

Seats and Carpets

Being garaged when not in use, it's really great to see that the car was dry throughout and we didn't notice any issues with dampness when we visited the 280 SL.

Rear seating option is a welcome upgrade to the car and gives the new owner modern day options when out on the road. The cloth shows well across the rear with only a slight bit of marking on the drivers seat through usage. This didn't cause us any major cause for concern and is something we've highlighted for you for a closer inspection in our interior gallery section.

Full visual details of the seats, dash and cabin can be found in our image gallery, please head over to take a look through for yourself where we've taken you through more detail of the cars interior.

Dashboard

Overall the dashboard looks great, sitting inside the Mercedes feels comfortable with everything where it should be. There was very slight evidence of cracking on the dash top closest to the offside side of the car which we felt important to note. Great looking wood panelling is still pride of place in the cabin centre giving that iconic 80's feel to the driving setup.

We covered some more detailed shots of the interior in our hi-resolution gallery, take a look over the images where our aim is to take you through the interior as if you were actually in the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 280 SL just demands to be driven - classic and clean looking the steering wheel is designed with no nonsense in mind and to keep you focused on the road ahead.

Glancing down at the centre console area, the auto gear selector looks to be in good condition. Overall, nothing that we observed to be out of the ordinary on our visit. Showing in a good condition throughout, this is functional Mercedes styling designed for driver comfort.

Mechanics

High quality, elegant design and clean lines still make this such a coveted car even in today's market.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the engine sounded good, we didn't notice any untoward noises from the engine, either at start up or whilst on the road. The engine bay looked good on our visit and there were no signs of oil leaks that we observed. Running the car from cold gave us no cause for concern and looking over the car initially, the engine idled steady when stationary.

Take a look at our "On the Road" video where we cover off the engine start up, idle and rev check and take the Mercedes around the local area to find out a little more about the 280 SL.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out Carroll took us around some local roads, the braking felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension.

Head over to the "Mechanical Review" video where we take a closer look at the car. We go into further detail around the vehicle and you can see the Mercedes out on some local roads.

The Drive

The Mercedes felt comfortable on our test drive, riding with no issues through our journey on the road. No shakes were observed or issues were heard on the road and there were seamless changes through the gears.

Overall, a really smooth and enjoyable ride where we heard no unwanted noises or anything that caused us a concern.

Electrics and Other

In place in the boot is the warning triangle and spare (steel) wheel. The hard top additional option comes as part of the ownership showing in an excellent condition along with the optional soft top roof.

Whilst out on our test drive Carroll let us know that the electrical elements were working as they should. Having been garaged when not in use we were pleased to see that the electrical components in the car also looked to be in a great condition. In addition to this, you'll see the car has a wind deflector installed to improve the experience when the roof is down.

History and Paperwork

A good level of service history and maintainance further backs up the love and care that has been poured into this car.

We've detailed the MOT certificates and receipts for services carried out in the paperwork gallery section. The Mercedes carries a good amount of paperwork as part of its history which we've displayed in the "History & Paperwork" gallery section. It's great to see the owners manual and maintenance books as part of this paperwork collection also. Looking over the maintenance book shows the history surrounding servicing and jobs carried out on the car and several receipts for work conducted are also present.

The car is complete with hardtop and cover, bag for cover and wheeled stand for hardtop. Also car cover and tyre savers are included in the sale. Carroll would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Update – The seller Carroll has removed the reserve on the auction, this car will sell to the highest bid in the auction. Good luck if you’re involved in the bidding. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics

Hi Carroll

I notice that on photo 57 of the exterior there appears to be some form of jagged split/gap along the sill under the drivers side door, along with some different texture that seems to indicate a repair of some sort. Can you give further details as to what lies beneath – particularly the gap, as it looks like it would allow water ingress.

Thanks.
John
