Launched in 1971, the R107 Mercedes SL has become one of the ultimate open-top classic cars. Deceptively quick, the SL encompassed all of Mercedes Benz’s traditional values, combining practicality, driving experience and elegance. There’s a bit more substance than just the SL’s V8 power, though, the very mention of an open-top Mercedes is perpetually connected with decadence and luxury. The SL’s interior is simple but intuitive, and the driving experience of the SL is one of understated elegance. It will glide you along any road with comfort, the unstressed V8 often reminding you that you have plenty of power and low down torque on tap. This is a reason why the R107 cars, particularly the 500 SL, are safe bets on the market.

Barry is a huge Mercedes fan, owning his previous 280SL for nearly ten years. The 500SL was always a car he wanted to own. Now that has been achieved; it is time to let someone else enjoy this classic Mercedes.

Meet the owner

The SL for me is a fantastic car to own - I love the convertible and being able to take it out in the summer is great fun.

Barry purchased the car a year ago as the 500SL had always been on Barry’s list of cars to own.

Here's what Barry has to say about his ownership and the car, "I owned an SL280 for 9 years, but always found it to be underpowered, so when I parted with it set about the search for an SL500. I came across this super smooth well cared for SL500 and fell in love with its all-round power, quietness and quality. The car has had only three previous owners, which is rare for a 37 year old vehicle. The first owner had the car for 18 years and I bought it from an engineer who had owned it for 17 years. Evidently, during these long ownerships, the car has been very well looked after, so I had a relatively easy job of keeping it as good as when purchased. The car is in original specification, except for the installation of an upmarket audio system; the original Blapunket radio comes with the car. Mostly, I enjoyed the effortless and smooth drive of this powerful car, I would describe it as 'sails like a dream'. I have enjoyed owning this car, but unfortunately it doesn't get used enough, so have decided to pass on its stewardship to someone who will use it more often.".

Arguably the perfect grand tourer - a removable hard top also makes the SL very usable when the weather isn't the best.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are in good condition and don't look to have been refurbished at any time - there are just some minor age-related marks. The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The SL is in good condition, and looking down the lines of the Mercedes, all appears to be nice and straight with no dings or dents to mention. The doors look to align as you expect and have a solid clunk when they close. The same can be said for the bonnet and boot, which also align well.

The brown fabric roof is said to be the original and is in excellent condition. The plastic windows show no signs of discolouration or creasing. The hard top matches the body colour and is in good condition with no damage to mention.

Paint

Finished in Thistle Green Metallic (881), the 500SL presents really well. However, it has received a coat of paint at some point in the past few years to freshen it up. That said, this means that stone chips are minimal, and the car has a deep lustre.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show you the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves and for you to make your own minds up on the condition.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and door windows are in good condition, with no scratches to mention. There is some slight perishing to the door window rubbers, but it shouldn’t be a difficult item to replace in the future.

The headlights are in good order with no chips, and the reflectors look to have a bright finish to them. Also fitted from the factory, the fog lights are in good order with no cracks to the lenses, and the rear lights are free from any damage. The brightwork around the SL is in excellent condition with no obvious signs of tarnishing to the bumpers, grille or mirrors.

Interior

Green on Green was the option for the 500SL - the original Pine Green material is outstanding.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in Pine Green (076), the seats in the Mercedes are in exceptional condition for the age of the vehicle and show minimal signs of any wear. The door cards are also in excellent condition, with no visible damage.

Just like the seats, the condition of the carpet is also superb. There is minimal wear to be seen in the usual high impact areas, such as the driver's heel pad, you could almost say it had been driven only wearing slippers.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in green and highlighted with a walnut trim which is in excellent condition, with no cracks to the lacquered finish. The instruments are working as they should, with no warning lights displayed, and the odometer shows a reading of ~164,873 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is the original and shows little signs of any wear. The automatic gearknob is also in good order, and so is its surround with the letters and numbers clearly legible.

Mechanics

The ultimate engine for the SL - 5.0 litre V8 producing 240bhp and 296lb-ft of torque.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up straight away with the distinct V8 sound, but quickly comes to a smooth, even idle with no untoward noises. Out in the car, it is effortless to drive, hardly being able to hear the V8, until you press the loud pedal that is! It then transforms from a smooth, sophisticated cruiser to a car capable of tearing down the Autobahn at incredible speeds.

The car pulls strongly, as you would expect from the 5.0 litre, and the gearchange is smooth with no noises coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

The Mercedes almost floats along, soaking up any bumps in the road with ease yet still capable of corning well. On the test drive, no noises were coming from either corner of the car. The brakes bring the vehicle to a halt as they should in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Smooth - that’s how you would describe being in the 500SL. It has everything you need, the roof off for the summer and a hard top for the winter, a 5.0 litre V8, and being a Mercedes, it is built to an excellent standard. It’s certainly a pleasure to be in and is a car which turns heads.

Electrics and Other

The in-car entertainment has been upgraded with a Pioneer head unit and is connected to two JBL 6x9 speakers mounted behind the seats. The original Blaupunkt radio is included and is said to be in working order. The switchgear throughout the Mercedes is in good condition with minimal wear to the switch faces and heater controls.

History and Paperwork

Just ~7,000 miles have been covered in the past 20 years.

The SL has been well maintained, which can be seen in the history file. Just three previous keepers have owned the vehicle, and in the past 20 years, it has only covered approximately 7,000 miles and was stored for seven years from 2011.

There is a collection of previous MOT certificates together with invoices for work carried out and a full breakdown of when and where the car was MOT’d and serviced in the past. [Update - 4/7/22] Barry will get a fresh MOT for the winning bidder before collection.

This is due to car not being used, last MOT 164,712, TODAY 164,877 that is 165 miles in 11 months, car needs to be used.
