Introduction

Alan
Professional Photographer

The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL model was a huge success for the company, it went on to become the second longest single series ever produced, after the G-Class - it’s easy to see why.

The R107 superseded the much-loved W113 model which included the esteemed 'Pagoda' roofed model. That car had done very well in North America, a key market, and Mercedes Benz were keen to replicate that success with the R107. In reality it did much better still with a total of a mere 49,000 of the earlier car sold worldwide, which was dwarfed by over 300,000 for the R107.

The R107 was the only Mercedes Benz roadster for the entirety of its production, so became uniquely emblematic of owners who admired the engineering kudos of the brand, but were keen to enjoy something more sporty and less conservative of the company’s saloons of the period.

In 1985 the more efficient 300 SL replaced the 280 SL - the engine was not only larger but also more powerful and more torquey, but also enjoyed the introduction of Bosch’s KE-Jetronic fuel injection system. The KE Jetronic system varied from the earlier, all mechanical system by the introduction of a more modern engine management "computer", which controlled idle speed, fuel rate, and air/fuel mixture.

For these and many other reasons the post ’85 cars like this one, and especially the 300 SL with its agreeable blend of power and useability, are considered the sweet-spot by many in the know. This particular car finished in the "Smoke Silver" colour over dark brown interior has been in the same ownership since 1986. Purchased from the dealer Greyfords Ltd who had put 900 miles on it, the vendor has had the car in the family ever since then.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've had this Smoke Silver SL in the family since 1986, and if you’d have told me then that I’d still be enjoying the charms of the car over 35 years later, well I would have been amazed!

Chris has relished the silky smooth delivery of the 3 litre straight six Mercedes-Benz engine. He has found the car reliable and robust and the KE-Jetronic injection making the car perform optimally in all conditions.

This car appealed to Chris initially because of the sublime colour, its very moderate mileage, the great overall condition and the extensive maintenance history. The original dealer Greyfords Ltd bought the stock and Chris purchased from them for £500 over the list price at £28,500, the wait list was some 2 years but he had to have one. Since October 1986, the car has always been in the family, and only ever driven by Chris, his wife, and for a short period his son. He'll be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Smoke Silver paint of this car suits its sophisticated yet purposeful air - a colour that is almost a blend of silver and gold combined with the good original condition makes this car a real head-turner.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15 inch “flat face” alloys present in very good general condition with no dings or scrapes being noticed. There is a very small amount of lacquer bubble around the centre caps, but it is only noticeable at close quarters.

The Joyroad economy tyres are 205/65 R’s and all appear to have plenty of tread remaining and provide that period correct generous side-wall that contributes so much to the ride comfort of the car.

Bodywork

During our visit, it looks like the bodywork has no major areas of concern. You will see from our photography package that the car is a practical, useable and original car. No garage-queen, but strikes the ideal balance between originality and potential for regular, even daily use and opportunity for improvement.

The main external bodywork issue we saw was a small hole at the lower side of the rear driver's side wing - please see the images / videos.

As can be seen from our photograph package, a sought after hard top is included in the sale of this car.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the bodywork condition for yourselves.

Paint

Mercedes Benz have a justified reputation for the generous application of paint during this period and this SL appears to be no exception. The paintwork is reflective, lustrous and no obvious areas of lacquer peel were found. A testament to the well cared for life the car has enjoyed.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in very good condition - no areas of distortion or discolouration were noted.

The fabric roof is generally good, however, it's showing its age a little and does have a tear, as you can see in the images. Also, since the pictures were taken there's now a small tear that happened when lowering the roof - it's on the top on the NS about 6” from the top of the window.

Interior

The well bolstered, pleated leather seats are instantly recognisable by many - possibly all thanks to several American TV shows of the period that featured W107’s and contributed to the success of the car.

Seats and Carpets

The well-padded signature pleated front seats are dressed in dark brown colour. There is the odd rough spot on the piping but otherwise the seats are as well presented as they are comfortable.

Carpets are in a complimentary “tobacco brown” and are deep pile with no visible areas of excessive wear.

Dashboard

The dash combined with dark walnut veneer adds to the sumptuous and luxurious ambiance of the SL’s cabin - it all presents very well too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The signature large steering wheel and eccentric gate of the automatic gear selector are further, highly recognisable features of the R107 interior.

No areas of concern were noted with these items - just expected wear as you can see in the images.

Mechanics

It is easy to overlook the significant mechanical enhancements made to the R107 for the 1986 model year - they are a big part of the reason why these late SL’s are so loved and sought after.

Engine and Gearbox

During our brief trip in the car, all mechanical systems worked as expected and belied the age of the car. The engine revs smoothly and the gears blur, imperceptibly from one to another.

The refinement of the running gear of the car remains a testament to Mercedes Benz’s engineering prowess of this period.

Suspension and Brakes

From the 1986 model year onwards the suspension and brakes of the 300 SL were also improved over its predecessor. As you will see from the on the road video, the brakes remain strong and an emollient ride is still very much in evidence.

The Drive

Smooth, refined, sophisticated. All adjectives often used to describe a drive in the post ’85 300 SL. This car is an exemplar of these qualities and you will see from Chris’s reactions during the video that he is still relishing driving this car after over 20 years of ownership.

Electrics and Other

All electrics appeared to be working as expected and Chris attests to their efficiency and reliability.

History and Paperwork

The provenance of the 300 SL is evidenced by some interesting original paperwork including its original dealership pre-delivery inspection sheet and “wartungsheft” or maintenance book.

Our photograph package features some interesting paperwork that accompanies this car, including stamped service records and original book pack. The registration number currently assigned is GEN 123 - this is not included in the sale and Chris will transfer the plate, or put it on retention prior to the new owner collecting the car. It's likely DVLA will issue the original plate back to the car, but not guaranteed.

Chris has set a very reasonable reserve on this car, ensuring a sale at auction - it is in very usable condition and has a current MOT, however, as you can see there's room for improvement if the new owner wishes.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Appreciate the answers Chris, thanks. The factory spec sheet says The interior was originally 073 Brazil Brown cloth. When the car was trimmed over in leather did you keep the original material – door trim and seat trim by any chance?

Hi Mike
No I didn’t keep any of the original trim. When I bought the car it was a showroom demo model. Had I ordered I would have spec’d leather but, at the time they were on two year deliveries. I had the new trim carried out some 9 years ago in colour match real leather

Hi, I can only see two services in its lifetime? Do you have more paperwork/invoices or am I incorrect? A recent MOT failure for structural corrosion seems to have been corrected – was this welding? The steering box oil leak seems to still be present on the MOt pass is this correct?

My car has not been a ‘collectors’ car. It has been my main car for 35 years. I have not kept paperwork but always had any faults/repairs carried out and paid by my company as and when required. The corrosion was dealt with by my neighbouring garage, cut out and welded, a very good job – I am in engineering and oversaw the workmanship. After the Mot, because there was slight cracking around the tyres I had 4 new ones put on. I have not witnessed any oil leak on drive, so believe this could only be slight but, will check out
