Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL model was a huge success, becoming the second longest single series produced after the G-Class.

Mercedes-Benz have a reputation for comfortable grand touring cars, which was well established prior to the R107 SL that made its first appearance in 1972. The brand's virtues were strengthened by the SL's ingrained quality, ease of use and mechanical hardiness. All this has made it into one of the easiest classic tourers to own today. Robust engineering and durable materials go a long way into making the SL a safe choice for those who like to travel in style without the uncompromising nature of other open-top classics of the era.

From 1985 the, more efficient, 300SL replaced the 280SL - the engine was not only larger but also more powerful with more torque, it also enjoyed the introduction of Bosch’s KE-Jetronic fuel injection system. The KE-Jetronic system varied from the earlier, all mechanical system by the introduction of a more modern engine management "computer", which controlled idle speed, fuel rate, and air/fuel mixture.

This 300SL has had various works carried out over its years but most recently a new radiator was fitted. The car is provided with 2 sets of keys and removable soft top roof as part of the final sale. This lovely classic is ready for all weather types thanks to its convertible setup.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Colin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's such an eye catching model and always receives lots of great comments from the public when I'm out driving.

The current owner, Colin, bought the Mercedes from a friend, also an avid car collector around ~3 years ago, Colin said, "a good friend collects classic cars, I managed to persuade him to let this one go."

Colin tells us, "I've always loved the 300SL from growing up in the '80s, so this car was one I've always had my eye on". Colin went on to say, "I love the car and I'm only selling because I have two kids now. With it only being a two seater, I just don't get the chance to use it as I'd like to".

Colin will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Mercedes build quality still shows its quality today; beautiful panel details, clean sporty lines and style in a class of its own.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 15" facelift alloys finished in silver, the wheels appear well cared for, with no signs of any concerning damage during our visit, just a few small notes of kerb damage and minor notes of lacquer peel to the centre sections.

The 300SL is fitted with Michelin Energy Saver tyres, the tyre spec showed with 205/65 all round. These appear to be in good condition, dated from 2016 with a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking over the Mercedes on our visit, the car maintains good visual panel gaps and both doors, bonnet and the boot open and close smoothly. We didn't note any major scratches or dings to the panelling.

We noted a little sign of corrosion on the rear sills, nothing serious but worth keeping an eye by the future owner.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The smart Nautical Blue metallic paint has an even finish across all the panels, overall showing in good condition and compliments the 300SL well.

There were no signs of any major concerns with the coverage and the colour showed nicely in the light. There were a few small stone chips noted to the bumper and front side panels. The black paint on the front fog light surrounds was peeling off on both sides - an easy fix for a Sunday job.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the Mercedes-Benz looked in good condition, in line with the age of the car; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration on our visit. We noted that much of the glass is original, etched with the number plate. The window seals look in good condition too when looking over the car.

The trim and seals are all in place with Mercedes logo and relevant 300SL badging looking smart. The soft top roof showed nicely, having been replaced in previous ownership, and presented no major concerns; just some marks observed to the interior sections.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

The Mercedes-Benz interior carries classic luxury and timeless elegance - with high-quality craftsmanship, the cabin features plush seating, rich wood trim, and intuitive controls.

Seats and Carpets

The Mercedes is kitted out with Alpaca grey check fabric and vinyl interior. We didn't note any concerns with rips or tears to the front or rear seats. The rear bench section showed in nice condition.

The main carpet of the interior showed in a lovely condition and over in the boot the carpet areas looked in a great condition too.

We cover the cabin area of the 300SL in further detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

Classic '80s styling looks great across the dash area of the 300SL. A simple, straightforward setup on this section shows well for the age of the car and we noticed no scuffs or marks here.

The dashboard presented well with no visible cracking or warping when we visited the car and showed ~94,553 on the clock when starting the car up. All the numbers on the dash area appeared clear and legible.

The dials, switches, and controls all appeared to be in great condition, with surfaces appearing free from fogging or scratching.

Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Mercedes dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic four-spoke Mercedes wheel is fitted, with a leather grip. The steering wheel presents in good condition and the black gear selector looks good too with numbers clearly legible.

Additional images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, are available in our Interior Gallery section - visit to see more details of what the Mercedes-Benz has to offer.

Mechanics

One of the most desirable engines in the R107, the 3.0L straight six is arguably the perfect match for this generation of SL.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the engine sounded good - we didn't notice any untoward noises either at start up or whilst on the road.

Running the car gave us no cause for concern and looking over the car initially, the engine idled steady when stationary.

Take a look at our "On the Road" video where we cover off the engine start up, idle and rev check and take the Mercedes around the local area to find out a little more about the 300SL.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the SL to a stop.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

The Mercedes felt comfortable on our test drive, riding with no issues through our journey on the road.

No issues were heard on the road and the changes through the gears were very smooth. Colin lets us know from his ownership, "The car starts first time and drives effortlessly".

Overall, a really smooth and enjoyable ride where we heard no unwanted noises or anything that caused us a concern. Our 'On the Road' video gives an overview of the car on some local roads and how it performs whilst driving.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in good condition. Colin mentioned that he's had no issues with the electrical elements of the car and confirmed everything working correctly to his knowledge.

The car has a Blaupunkt tape player stereo system fitted. Although we were unable to test it on our review video, Colin mentions he's had no issue with this. Over in the boot, a spare wheel with Pirelli tyre was also present.

History and Paperwork

A well presented example of the R107, finished in Nautical Blue Metallic, coming to market from ~3 years of ownership with under ~1,000 miles covered in the last ~5 years.

The current keeper, Colin, bought the Mercedes-Benz from a friend, also an avid car collector around ~3 years ago. The car had been well kept and regularly serviced in his keep and Colin continued the maintenance, having spent ~£1,600 on the car in general servicing. Being a largely original example, the 300SL has given the current owner very little to maintain over his ownership.

The Mercedes is factory specced with; Alpaca grey fabric seats, additional (UK) indicator lights, ABS, electronically adjustable and heated rear view mirror, electric windows, all-round WD-Green glass, heated rear windscreen, dark blue soft top and the Nautical Blue metallic paint finish. The 300SL is supplied with 2 sets of keys and Mercedes log book.

A new radiator was fitted in 2023. In 2022 both front ball joints were replaced and the radiator re-cored. In August 2012, 2 new tyres were replaced, in March 2012, a new timing chain and tensioner was replaced. In April 2010 the exhaust system was replaced costing over ~£900, in August 2007 the heater control and blower was replaced, in September 2001 the fuel pump was replaced, in August 2001 the alternator was renewed and in July 2001 the fuel pipe was replaced.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, yes like the last chap has said, has the heater cover been removed and the bulkhead checked? Thanks.

Hi Colin,
Congratulations on a well presented car, it looks great. I have been looking for a 107 for some time now as I had three many years ago and like many others didn’t appreciate what a fantastic vehicle they are. I am a retired Engineer and the thought of some project work doesn’t really bother me, but the question I would like to ask please is the fact that one of the photos shows water underneath the carpet so I naturally had concerns about bulkhead integrity. Have you ever had this checked?
Kind regards
Mark.
