Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Sleek, elegant and well-engineered - the 300 SL (R107) continued a long-standing Mercedes tradition - this is a great example of the model.

1971 marked the start of a production run for the R107 which ultimately lasted an impressive 19 years. Agile and capable these cars are comfortable, quiet, beautifully engineered, and stunning to look at. Essentially, they’re everything you expect from Mercedes.

The naturally aspirated, in-line, 6-cylinder engine delivers 185BHP to the rear wheels through a smooth, 4 speed, automatic gearbox. The car can achieve a factory specified 0-60 in around 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 126 MPH.

Well regarded for the quality of Mercedes engineering, impeccable handling, and highly creditable performance the 300 SL is very much a useable, practical classic.

Coming to auction from 18 years ownership and always garage kept, this 300 SL is presented in stunning “Signal Red” over '80s period check upholstery. The car is in amazing original condition and will be sold with a new MOT. With only 3 owners since new this is a superb example.

We have taken plenty of high-resolution photos and videos of this lovely convertible - do take a look and judge for yourself.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Stanley the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love everything about this beautiful car – the looks, the engineering and the drive are wonderful.

Stanley has owned this car for 18 years and has enjoyed every minute of it, he tells us:

“It’s such a beautiful machine and so original – no modifications and in my ownership no respray or work done on the engine or bodywork”.

Stanley is now 82 and has decided to give up driving, he has this message for the next owner:

“As a final car I couldn’t have chosen anything better - I hope very much that this lovely tourer can go to someone who enjoys it as much as I have”.

Stanley is happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below

Exterior

Classic Mercedes styling - low stance, elegant lines and stunning signal red paintwork.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15-inch face-lift wheels appear in good, serviceable, condition and show no significant signs of kerbing or other damage.

The wheels are shod with 205/65/R16 tyres all round and all appear in good condition and have good tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, panel gaps and shut lines look good while boot, bonnets and doors open and close with precision – exactly what we would expect from Mercedes build quality. The soft top appears in good condition with only some minor historic repairs and age-related wear.

The factory hardtop looks in very good shape with clear glass and good paintwork. There is some very minor distortion to the chrome trim, but it is generally sound overall.

There is some slight bubbling to the offside windscreen edge, a small area of the boot surround and some age-related marks here and there, however, these do not detract significantly from the overall appearance of the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourself.

Paint

Signal red is great on any car and is a fantastic colour choice for the R107 showing off the elegant lines perfectly. Overall, the paint presents well and looks consistent and even right across the car. There are the occasional age-related marks but for a 35-year-old car, this 300 SL looks great.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows and hood screen all present well, and we could see no sign of significant chips or scratches. Lights, mirrors, lenses and badging all look good. It’s easy to take Mercedes quality for granted.

Interior

Oh so '80s - the black and white check fabric really captures the spirit of the period – the interior is comfortable and spacious, yet has a purposeful and sporty feel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in good condition and have no major rips or tears with only some minor wear to the driver’s seat bolster.

Seat backs, door cards and headlining all present well and carpets appear clean and in good condition.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks great, and dials appear clear with no scratches or misting to the perspex.

All switchgear looks in good condition and Stanley assures us everything works as it should.

There is some minor lifting to the wood veneer on the passenger side facia, but nothing that detracts from the overall sound presentation of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The interior of this car conveys a real sense of purpose. The black steering wheel and Mercedes branded centre boss appear in very good condition. The Auto selector lever also looks good showing no more than the expected signs of wear.

Mechanics

Engaging, communicative and thoroughly rewarding - 3.0L, 186bhp, silky smooth, straight six delivers a thoroughly entertaining drive.

Engine and Gearbox

For a 35-year-old car the engine bay presents really well and we could see no signs of leaks.

On our Cold Start the car fired up without hesitation and idled steadily and evenly - emissions appeared clear and we could see no warning lights on the dash.

On our brief drive out the engine pulled well and changes through the automatic transmission were smooth and slick – check out the “On the Road” video to see for yourself.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt firm and planted while providing a comfortable ride. Discs front and rear ensure this car can be arrested when required.

Stanley assured us that all suspension and brakes work as expected.

The Drive

On our short drive with Stanley the car pulled smoothly and gear changes through the auto box were barely perceptible. The car stopped evenly without any sign of judder and steering seemed precise. We could hear no knocks, bangs or trim rattle and the car felt surefooted and planted.

Check out the On the Road video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials and gauges appeared in sound condition and Stanley assures us everything works exactly as it should.

The car has a working radio cassette player just waiting for those '80s classics!

History and Paperwork

With a fresh MOT and a history of careful and diligent ownership this is a chance to own a sorted, ready to go example of this modern classic.

Beautiful inside and out, wonderfully engineered and a delight to drive – it’s a Mercedes of course.

Stanley will miss this lovely roadster but it’s time for a new owner to do him the honour of taking it on. This lovely roadster has so much more to offer, and no one will be happier to see it go to a loving new home than Stanley.

The history file has extensive paperwork including original manuals, service schedule and details of recent works.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
