The Mercedes-Benz SL class ('Sport-Leicht' or 'Sport Light' in its English translation) is one of Merc's longest running production models and for good reason; distinguished looks, iconic branding and German Engineering at some of its absolute best. The R107 represented a new line of upgraded models with updated design style, additional safety features vs previous incarnations and the most significant update of a V8 engine option being added. In 1985 Mercedes upgraded the SL class again with its first big update benefitting the R107 with better braking and handling, as well as some design tweaks.

This particular car finished in "Champagne Gold Metallic" (473) over "Brazil Brown" (273) leather is a UK supplied, low mileage, facelift model of the top of the line R107 500 SL. It has clearly led a charmed life, it has seen regular servicing in line with the low mileage covered, and more recently has had significant preventative expenditure and maintenance by marque specialists SL SHOP less than ~500 miles ago in 2017. With just 6 former keepers, the low mileage of ~28,850, this desirable facelift R107 has got to be one of the best cars available on the market.

Meet the owner

An iconic reflection of the 80s, the 500 SL is luxury cruising at some of its absolute finest.

Simon has had this SL for shy of a year, he tells us "I've always wanted to own one of these 80s SL's. I looked for the best example I could find, this low mileage facelift car is stunning".

Being a bit of a self confessed petrolhead, he owns a couple of other sports cars and as a result he has covered just ~150 miles in the SL this past year. As a result, based on the condition, he feels it deserves to be part of a collection, and so the car comes to market with us on auction. Exterior

Finished in a beautiful colour, the exterior of this low mileage 500 SL presents in excellent condition.

Wheels and Tyres

Showing in a great condition the 15" facelift alloy wheels look to have barely a mark on them, and reflect the condition of the rest of the car. Mercedes 3 pointed star emblems are present at the centre on each side with the rims classic of the era of the Mercedes.

Michelin Energy Saver tyres are in place on all four corners and show a mix of date coding between 2014 and 2015. Take a look at the images and videos to see the detail.

Bodywork

The shut lines look really great around this SL, all sitting well, its obvious checking over the car that it's been really well looked after over its lifetime. Overall we couldn't note any real cause for concern or anything that stood out to us as an issue on this car. In 2017, the car had a bulkhead inspection and remedial work actioned by marque specialists SL SHOP, and the car has covered less than ~500 miles since.

Paint

Great looking all round the vehicle, the "Champagne Gold Metallic" paint looks excellent, and has been clearly looked after over time. The finish and match are even across all the panels including the colour matched hard top.

Glass and Trim

Reflecting the condition the rest of the car, the glass and trim show in a great condition with no cause for concern that we noted looking over the car. Windscreen, side windows and mirrors all look good with no significant scratching, marks or chips. If we're being fussy, the A pillar trim weather strips seals could do with replacing.

Interior

Like a step back into a past era, the interior of this Mercedes-Benz is a real taste of classic and iconic 80s styling.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in "Brazil Brown" leather, the driver and passenger seats look in amazing condition, even looking over the seating sections we struggled to find an area we weren't satisfied with. Despite nearing four decades of history with the car, the seats still remain comfortable and inviting as they once would have been, in the main due to the low mileage this car has travelled.

Carpet areas across the car are in very good condition too. The brown carpet is definitely an 80s touch. Often overlooked, even the boot area carpet sections show in a really great condition with sound deadening sections above the spare wheel of an equally great quality.

Dashboard

Overall the dashboard looks great, sitting inside the Mercedes feels comfortable with everything where it should be. Dials and gauges, switches and buttons all looked in fantastic condition with all areas of the wood panelling showing in a lovely condition also.

The dash area is unmistakably 80's with its classic looks, lines and colourway. Sometimes these can crack/warp, nothing of the such observed to the dash top on this low mileage example. Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Overall, nothing that we observed to be out of the ordinary in the cabin area on our visit. Showing in a good condition throughout, the wheel and gear selector stick are both of a straight forward design and present smartly.

Mechanics

Low mileage, full engine and gearbox service and regular maintenance have helped keep the V8 in this 500 SL in excellent condition.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the engine sounded good, we didn't notice any untoward noises, either at start up or whilst on the road. The engine bay looked good on our visit and there were no signs of oil leaks that we observed. Running the car from cold gave us no cause for concern and looking over the car initially, the engine idled steady across each of its 8 cylinders when stationary. In 2017, the car had a full service, including the gearbox, by marque specialists SL SHOP.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out Simon took us around some local roads, the braking felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension. The work in 2017 by SL SHOP also included brake and suspension work as detailed in the invoice section.

The Drive

The SL retains its prestige as a grand touring sports car, it's easy to see why this has been one of Mercedes' longest serving production lines with its ride comfort, power and stability on the road. Fitted with the superb 5.0L V8 engine, the ride is effortless and drives as good as it looks.

Electrics and Other

The Mercedes has an aftermarket Panasonic radio in the centre panel, although not tested out on the road test, Simon assures us that he has no issues working this previously. Simon let us know that he had no other issues with any of the other electrical components in the car also.

Dials and gauges work as they should, the 3 dial set up with contrasting yellow indicator needles also look really great sat proudly on the dashboard. Firing up the Mercedes from cold showed the dials reading and responding nicely with no observed issues noted.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD, facelift example of the desirable R107 500 SL, it comes to market in excellent condition thanks to the low mileage and just 6 former keepers.

Low mileage and important servicing and restoration work on a such an iconic car are not often seen. If you're in the market for a fantastic looking classic Mercedes-Benz R107 SL, this one should feature high on your list. Updated brake callipers and pads, full engine service and gearbox service as well as a whole vehicle and engine bay detailing process were actioned by SL SHOP in 2017, less than ~500 miles ago. A key piece of restoration work provided in 2017 was the full bulkhead inspection and remedial work where needed. The cost of this was over £4,500 which has significantly improved the future history and preservation of this car.

Hi Simon, I watched the test drive video that is on Ebay. Two questions. 1. It appears in the video that the gear leaver is moving around when you come off or on the accelerator and with a slight knock. 2. When you pull away in the car approx 4m53s there is a knock from the nearside. 3. Can you confirm if the car has AC and if it works as it should.

Just realised auction site posted on eBay.
Front n/s wheel bearing replaced after photoshoot. Non a/c car. Not aware of any knocking sound or gear selector moving around. If you are concerned about anything you should view car. The only job that requires doing is A pillar weatherstrip seals.

I have just watched the video 3 times, there is some camera wobble, but no sign of the gear selector moving at all. Also cannot hear any knocking sounds. When I placed this vehicle with Trade Classics I informed them that a wheel bearing needed replacing, and it would be replaced before sale, it has been.
I also informed them that both A pillar weatherstrip seals would need replacing by new owner, that is mentioned in bio!
£150 ea for better than oem from The SL Shop.
Try finding a low mileage car in this condition south of £50k. If you manage to find one please let me know. The SL Shop currently has a similar car for sale at £70k!

No problem. I did not know that Trade Classics had posted on eBay, that threw me at first. The car is about as mint as you will find. Just the 2 weatherstrip seals to replace.
