Introduction

Jon Dixon
Professional Consigner

The Mercedes R107 is a beautiful looking car and has matured nicely over the last couple of decades.

They are superbly built and deserve the title of ‘over engineered’. It’s surprising what you can get for your money as they have always been great value when compared to other classics of similar eras / build quality. This is a car you can pull up anywhere in and get admiring glances – they are just so pretty and look great in this colour combination.

Brian knows this car through-and-through and is only selling due to the fact he’s bought another classic and needs the space. He’s priced the car super low so it will sell with us. This pricing will also give the new owner a bit of room to remedy the few areas of bodywork if they wish to do so.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jon after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Brian loves this car and he’s owned it for just over six years now.

Brian used it mainly at weekends and it has always been garaged during his ownership. Brian has done all the servicing himself and you’ll see what he’s done recently in the ‘Mechanics’ section of this listing.

Brian took Jon out to film our usual ‘On the Road’ video (see below) and it performed faultlessly.

Exterior

There’s no doubt about it, this car looks great in the red / tan colour combination. The car would benefit from some rust remediation around the inner wheel arches and sills. Once this work is complete then it will turn the car into an excellent UK example with lower ownership.

Wheels & Tyres

The car is fitted with original alloys and wrapped in a set of 205/65/15 tyres (mixed brands) – please take a look at the images and videos to see the full condition.

Bodywork

The car has been professionally resprayed in the past – this was before Brian’s ownership; at least over six years ago now. So what you see is original, i.e. nothing has been covered up.

The main areas to note are signs of rust forming on the wheel arches – most of it is contained to the inner lip and hasn’t spread too far on the outside; this will be an easier repair. Also you’ll see some rust on the sills that will need attention too.

There is a small dent on the rear OS wing that has been pointed out in the videos too. Please review all the images and videos to assess the full condition for yourself.

Paint

The red paint looks good and is even across the panels – we didn’t notice any colour differences.

There are a few small marks to note that you’ll see in the videos / images.

Glass and Trim

Both are in good condition across the car – please assess the images and videos to see the detailed condition.

Interior

The interior is original and in lovely condition. Please take a moment to view the interior video to see the full condition.

Seats and Carpets

Both the seats and carpets are in original condition – the wear on the seats and bolsters are in line with the age of the car.

Dashboard

The gauges and interior are in good original condition – Mercedes of this era were built to last and stand the test of time.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both are in good condition with no issues noticed.

Mechanics

As mentioned, Brian took Jon out for a short drive on some London roads and the car performed without issue.

Engine and Gearbox

The car started first go from cold – (please see the cold start video). The engine soon settled into a smooth tick over.

All fluids were recently changed by Brian – you’ll see in the paperwork that original parts were used for the servicing.

Suspension and Brakes

There were no knocks or rattles on the drive out.

Please watch the video to see the car accelerating, steering and stopping. It preformed just as you’d expect it to.

The Drive

The car really drives great and there were no issues detected on the drive.

Electrics and Other

Brian informs us the basics all work as they should.

History and Paperwork

This is an original UK RHD car that was supplied by Greenoaks Motor Co in Surrey back in March 1988.

The original service history book is included that runs to 34k miles (see below) – the car has now done a total of 113k miles and has just been serviced.

Please see the images below to review all the paperwork that comes with the car, including the service history and previous invoices.

Hi I would like to register my interest on the SL 300 but first I have a pertinent question regarding the bulkhead. Is the owner aware of any replacement or work relating to this area ? These cars were prone to rusting of this area due to the drain holes being blocked thus rotting the hole of this area. Due to visable rust on sills and wings that have not been attended to it is unlikely the bulkhead area has been inspected. To do this the black cover below the front screen needs to be removed ( 8 screws ) the bulkhead can then be inspected. Should this area need work the cost would be in the region of £4 – 7 k. If this is the case I would not be interested in taking it any further. Also could you confirm which area is on the last image of the bodywork before the image of the v5 , looks like some kind of hole.
Look forward to your reply.
