The timeless R107 is a beautiful, reliable and fun classic that has the '80s written all over it. Boasting the V8 bulletproof power plant and second-to-none build-quality, it is one of our personal favourites.

The Mercedes SL (R107) was introduced in 1971 and manufactured until 1989. This example is a later "facelift" example from 1988 and therefore featured the advantages of better braking, handling, and importantly galvanised bodywork to help prevent rust.

We really like this example owned by Edward and finished in a stunning Smoke Silver (702) metallic paint, it screams the '80s and we love that. With only 2 previous owners who have both really cared for this car over its life.

Meet the owner

I love SL's, ever since a child, I've always thought they look awesome. I thought this might be a car that I would keep forever.

With the low ownership history on this example, and its originality, Edward took the opportunity to acquire the car and put it in to storage. The car has always been dry stored in a garage and comes with its colour matching hard-top roof pictured, perfect for British winters.

He buys and sells a few cars when time permits, and this particular example he thought would be one to enjoy in years to come, a forever car. However, due to a change of circumstance, the car is now with us for sale at auction.

EXTERIOR VIDEO

Exterior

Finished in a classic and desirable Smoke Silver colour, this SL 500 has a Hollywood elegance about it.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” classic Mercedes wheels look really good on this example. Classy styling all round.

The wheels look in excellent condition with no curbing or marks observed. The rubber looks excellent as well, all the tyres where replaced in 2016 with premium Michelin rubber on each wheel. Please see the images and videos for an extensive view.

Bodywork

While observing the bodywork on this car, we think it looks really good. All the panel gaps are tight with even in spacing. We did notice a little surface rust on the off-side under the running board. However, the rest of the underside looks very clean.

Paint

The paintwork on this car looks beautiful. A fantastic classic colour choice with the data plate in the bonnet inferring colour 702 Smoke Silver Metallic, that really does stand out on the roads today for all the right reasons.

The paintwork is even in finish and colour all over the car, we noticed some minor flaking and stone chips in the bonnet and on the roof. All in, a really nice example - please view the images and videos to see the crystal clear reflections on this paintwork.

Glass and Trim

Inline with the rest of the car, in excellent condition. The rubber seals and trim look great on this example – including the hardtop roof. The soft top however, finished in a contrasting chocolate brown, has some tears in it that are a result of how it's been creased over time. The rest of it looks amazing, but time has taken its toll either side of the rear window as pictured.

The brightwork would benefit with some light polishing to really bring the chrome out. On top of this, the bonnet is missing the washer jet tops, take a look at the photos and video to see the detail.

Interior

Mercedes-Benz of this era have that familiar business like feel to them, and the R107 is no different.

Seats and Carpets

The class pours through into the interior on the 500SL. Finished in Mushroom leather code 275 from the data plate, carpets and a wood veneer centre console.

The leather seats have done well through their 32 years and 156k miles of service. They are showing creases and cracks as pictured. The seats would benefit from a deep detail to bring them back to their former glory.

Dashboard

Moving onto the dashboard which is in line with the rest of the car – also in great condition.

A very clean dashboard to be found, all the dials are crisp and clear with no fogging or discolouration. We love the classic three-dial layout Mercedes have adopted here. Please take a look at the photos and videos for more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A very minimal yet effective steering wheel found inside this land yacht. The large Mercedes-Benz classic 4 spoke steering wheel puts you in full control.

Edward assures us the car handles exactly as you'd expect for a Mercedes of this calibre. He reports the car stops just as it should do too. The car has just been put through an MOT too, having been in storage for the past 5 years.

I believe there are some bills I think there are some in the photos. The couple I bought it from loved it as it was her 50th birthday present when new. The garage that MOTd it probably service I’d imagine. It’s real find same family since new
